Hillscape: Cluck-U Issue

The latest Hillscape column references the excitement over fast food regulation on H Street.

it's a good column but one major error about seating. (Plus another error in the column calls the Washington Business Journal Washingotn Business Week.)

Read it again Richard. The piece says that Cluck-U has "no sit-down service." To me, that just says they don't bring you food to the table (or take your order at the table). The article never says Cluck-U lacks seating.

i agree with inked. i think what he meant is there's no sit down service where a waiter takes your order/brings your food like at most places we think of as restaurants.

And by no means I am the only engine driving change on H Street. Over the last three years, Commissioner Cody Rice and his committee of citizen volunteers have been the brain power behind most of these initiatives. Also, HSMS and the Office of Planning really led the way on the development of the comprehensive plan for H Street.

As we all know, it takes dozens if not hundreds of people working together to get changes implemented.

Okay,

While I think that Cluck-U *should* follow regulations and procedures, I was there last night getting takeout and a) there were patrons seated and eating and b) they were getting table service. Admittedly, there is no waitstaff and so one of the kitchen workers just shlepped the tray over, but still, not take-out style. Also, I noticed that they have removed the big fast-food style garbage cans and have little plastic flowers on all the tables. Does this mean that most of us who go there aren't getting their delicious wingers to go? Probably not, but they are trying to make it more restaurant-y. Also yesterday a friend who lives in Capitol Hill SE admitted to me that since I'd introduced him to Cluck-U a few weeks ago, he's been back three times...

But the critical question is this: Which H Street establishment really does have the tastiest/best value buffalo-style chickin wings?

During the last week, I've eaten chicken wings at Cluck-U, the H Street Martini Lounge, and the Argonaut.

I recall the prices being the lowest at Cluck-U; the Martini Lounge and Argonaut were comparable in price--$7.95, I think.

The Martini Lounge had the nicest presentation, but the wings were a bit small. Maybe not the best match to go with my martini. Of course, the lounge has the best atmosphere.

Cluck-U wings were acceptable for the price (I've had them twice; the second time the wings were overdone). Downed them with a cup of soda. Better with beer.

Argonaut's wings have also been inconsistent; once they were delicious (hot, meaty, with just enough kick), but cool and fatty the next. The pub's atmosphere is classic dive bar. Good beer to go with the wings.

I'm not a chicken wings expert, and I've not yet made up my mind about the best wings. I think I need to do more research.

Do any other H Street establishments offer good wings that could give these other three a run for the money?

Does Birdland have wings? I've been dying to try to the food there I just haven't had the time.

I like Cluck U's wings. I did not care for Argonaut's too much at all--maybe I went on a bad night. Cluck U is always clean, decent service.

Could it be that the anti Cluckers knowingly mislead the public about
having "only"to get a special exception to keep operating? It seems that Cluck U will need a variance, too. Wonder how that got that fact got overlooked.

If the block were in a historic district, there'd be no problem getting the variance, if the other conditions were met. It's not good to hold historic buildings to suburban zoning requirements.

Everyone is concentrating so hard on CLuck U, which happens to be very clean, the focus needs to be on that dirty and rat infested POPEYES. There are so many other issues that need to be addressed on Hst like the many abandoned buildings that these owners need to sale or fix up.

If a restaurant is dirty, or rat infested, that is a Health DEpartment issue. The question regarding Cluck-U is not whether it is well run, but rather if it should have been granted a certificate of occupancy as a matter of right.
