New Additions to the Neighborhood

1. The Rib Tip (1128 H Street, 202-388-0441) is open, but only for breakfast. They've still got about 80k in restaurant supplies to order, and the breakfast thing is a way of gauging demand. Hours are 5:30am-11:00am. Breakfast is sit down, or carryout (carryout entrance is on the side). If you elect to sit down they've got full table service (and I think around 6 tables). Breakfast covers all your basics: coffee, oj, apple juice, bacon, bologna, ham, sausage, scrapple, smoke sausage, turkey bacon, turkey sausage, eggs, pancakes, apple sauce, grits & homefries. The full breakfast special ranges from $4-4.75, and cheaper items like pancakes and sandwiches start at $2.50. Fair warning for the allergic, they cook with peanut oil. Looks like a cute place for breakfast.

2. E&R Catering & Carryout (on 13th Street just north of H). I just noticed this one on Saturday & I haven't snagged a menu or a peak inside yet. Apparently they sell soulfood.

3. Art lessons. Sorry that I've got no name on this one, but here's what I know: the is a new artist/gallery space upstairs at 417 H Street. Above Sidamo (or at least that's where I think those stairs lead). I didn't read the entire flyer, but apparently you can take art classes from the guy (I think he had three types listed, and I recall that one was oil painting). So the next time you stop by Sidamo, take a look at the class list posted on the door right next to Sidamo's entrance.

I think the key is that the sites for open places stay up. Is the Atlas website still mentioned in the City Paper ads? If so, they might want to change the ad.

You can still buy tickets on the atlas website even though it isn't very pretty at the moment. It is undergoing a total renovation which will be up and running sometime early next year.

I have heard on some authority that Engler has sold the Beehive, and it is now going to be a Sushi restraunt. In addition, what ever happened to the Olympic? I am betting that Joe is running out of money, so he's cutting back on what he plans to open. One question is, is he getting liquor licenses for those buildings so they can be part of what he sells?

I'm glad someone commented about those domains. Is the atlasdistrict one of Mr. Englert's? The webmaster was a guy named Mike Murphy. If it's not an Englert Site, the owner may have just got tired of paying for it.
The Pug was the one that worried me...that's supposed to be opening imminently, yeah?
I agree w/ Anonymous...probably a cash crunch. Speaking of things trailing off, we should probably have a pre-emptive letter-writing campaign aimed at making sure the city doesn't cut funding for fixing up H St. They may look for places to cut to fund the incoming administration's many promises.

I haven't heard the sushi restaurant thing. If the building has been sold, the city hasn't updated its records. I believe the Olympic might not be happening, but it was really a project of one of Joe Englert's partners, so I don't think it reflects on his economic situation. Domain names are cheap guys, so the lapse of a domain name doesn't signal any kind of economic disaster (not every bar out there has a website, and if your bar is still in the building stage, it's probably not all that productive to have a website that just sits there). I wouldn't panic, or read too much into any of this. The Pug is also a project of one of Joe Englert's partners. And yes, the guy is still working on it. I see him almost every morning while I wait for the X2. These things just take time. If you are worried about the economics of these places, go have a beer, or a burger, or whatever.

My earlier comment about the Atlas website was regarding the Atlas District website (I sould have been more clear). The site for the Atlas Performing Arts Center is, of course, still up and running.

Joe Hoya, the 3 domain names in question haven't (yet) been poached by anybody. The page you see is generated by eNom, the registrar, for expired domains that are still within the RGP (redemption grace period).

Inked, it's true that domains are cheap -- a basic registration can be had for less than $10/yr -- but I think this misses the point. Englert & Co presumably registered those names for a reason, and created at least a little goodwill associated with them (hence the awareness & curiosity among commenters here), but now they can't spare $10 to renew a name?

I agree that not every bar needs its own domain name/website, but then why register the names in the first place? It is more than a little puzzling.

In any event, it's lovely to have you back & blogging again. Hope exams went well.

Still working on the paper, so expect disruptions for the next 3-4 days.

The other thing to remember is that it's not just registration...you also have to pay for hosting, which is more like $40/yr on up. I suspect that it was an oversight because the creation of the "destination" is Mr. Englert's whole strategy so letting the atlasdistrict.com site lapse wouldn't be a very smart move unless that 40 bucks was all that was left in the ol' bank account.

I am down to $3 in my bank account. Can Mr. Hoya, Rob and Inked maybe lend me a few sheckles so I can get my two swaddling clothed children an orange and a pair of socks for Christmas? The kids will go sockless every other day until I sell my domain names for a total of $40. (Wholesale, cut rate)

Happy Holidays, Englert

Stopped in to the Rib Tip this morning for a cup of coffee (12 oz cup to go is only .75...beats McDonald's!) while waiting for the bus. The place is bright and super-clean, the staff were welcoming...and they were empty! Not a patron in sight. Check it out soon, everyone...
