On Offer at The Rib Tip

IMG_0416
Please excuse the old photo. I need to get a new one.
Located at on the corner of 12th & H Street, the Rib Tip is currently open only for breakfast (5:30-11:30am), but expect that to change as early as the end of this month (when the restaurant will stay open until 8pm, or until the day's supply of ribs is exhausted). The owner says business has been growing steadily since he opened. The breakfast menu covers your basics (meats, pancakes, grits, toast, hashbrowns, eggs, ect.) at decent prices. I ordered coffee, orange juice, and the full breakfast with the grits, bacon, and sunny side up eggs (you get two pieces of toast & jam with your breakfast). The breakfast was huge. I had to take half of it home. The bill was $6.00. Health food isn't on the menu, but if you're looking to indulge in a greasy spoon type breakfast, you may have found the place. The decor is simply decorated. The music is old school soul, and the service is friendly. The restaurant is small, but there are nine tables tucked away in there. Carryout is also available. I look forward to sampling the full menu.

I had the exact same meal day before yesterday at the Art Gallery Cafe. With coffee, tax, and tip, the bill ran $12.50.

Here I come, Rib Tip!

Service was pretty slow but owner/manager was apologetic. My small child loved the place and was not to destructive. PS the bacon was done perfect crisp but not burnt.

What are they going to serve when the open up for lunch and dinner? Will it be barbeque? (It's named Rib Tip after all.) And if so, does anybody know which region of BBQ -- Texas, North Carolina, Kansas City, or Memphis?

Thanks.

Open on Sundays?

I want to say yes, but I've misplaced my copy of the menu.

fantastic homefries!

Actually, it appears they are not open on Sundays (based on my view from the bus this morning).

To be fair, the $6 did not include tip, but it was the total bill including tax.

I must say that I loved the place. Even though service is somewhat slow, who cares..we were not in any hurry to go anywhere and really just enjoyed the atmosphere. I had turkey bacon and it was wonderful, not like some that is so full of sodium you used up all of your salt intake for a week. The owner said that they will have ribs, rib tips, chicken, cole slaw, bbq beans and potato salad.
Let me say that the portions are huge and two of us ate for $8.25 and had enough leftovers to bring home. The homefries with onions were wonderful.. no Sunday hours however.

Saturday, I went to the Rib Tip with a group of 4 adults and two kids. We arrived hungry and left full-- cost us $14.

The service experience was really quite hilarious, though. The couple who runs the place were in so far over their heads they could not see straight. Their only waitress had just quit on them. They managed to get everyone in the place served, though just barely and everyone in the place kept a good sense of humour throughout. It brought back many nightmare memories from my own days in the restaurant business...

The point I would like to make is that the Rib Tip is a much needed breakfast spot in the neighborhood with good, cheap food. If you go (which you should), be ready to be flexible in the early days as they work the service thing out.

I also went to the Rib Tip on Saturday - unfortunately I brought some friends from out of town, thinking it would be nice to show them around some of the new developments in my neighborhood.
We weren't in a hurry and were quite understanding of the fact that they were short-staffed and frazzled; even so the service was laughable. There was at least a 30 minute gap between when our first and last entree came out to the table. The coffee was burnt, bacon was underdone for two of our entrees but overdone for the others and the over-medium eggs were fried until rubbery. Two of four orders were incorrect.
I hope the place does well, but if they can't turn out eggs and bacon well in the smallest of diners (I counted fourteen seats) I've got my doubts.
At the very least, my friends left DC with a very memorable breakfast experience!
Also, the manager told us that BBQ service starts at the end of this month.

I just went to the Rib Tip for breakfast for the first time -- and the food was pretty good, with the service being exactly what I expected... its definitely for people who want a slow-paced bfast.

They did say they are going to stay open until 8pm in the coming weeks, and will begin to do a special Sunday breakfast, whatever that means... for a cheap place to get good food on the hill, I definitely recommend this one!
