off topic, but sort of related.
i just went to the liquor store on 3rd and H for some cabernet.
they had two types, both of which are horrible. i got one anyway...
it's korean owned, and has one of those nasty thick plastic-bullet proof counter barriers, as it should.
i was in a line of about 12 people.
all twelve in front of me were buying singles. i was only one of three that bought wine.
wow. the stars must be in the right places, cuz these folks were angry! they were yelling, and complaining about not having more counters, that the occupancy level had been exceded and that they should call the po-lice.
ok, so there were three people there that were buying wine. clearly they (myself included) were from upper economic brackets. i could tell by shoes, shirts (read emblems/logos - not to be confused with yuppies. very discreet, but noticeable).
anyway..... i'm rambling, but my point is that there is a market for this store - for people that buy wine, for example. but they're holding themselves back by selling singles.
it doesn't make good economic sense.
i guess they can't just stop tomorrow, or they'll be pelted out of town. you'd have to hire security to make a change as drastic as not selling singles.
still.. i don't get it.
sell singeles, lose market share and profitability, and keep that nice plastic barrier up.
is it just me, or do other folks see the problem?
same thing goes for the florida market.
oh! and i went through there today. i collect old tools, and look for bargains, so i frequent the place, as it's in walking distance. the traffic was gnarly.
one guy (pedestrian) was actually hit, but he seemed ok.
there was also a fight, which i crossed the street to avoid.
other than that, it was peachy.
