Gearing Up @ 12th & Florida

If you've recently seen police escorts speeding down Florida Ave with semi trucks hauling huge black wrapped boxes you may have watched parts of these massive pre-fab homes on their way into town. Currently there are a couple of stacks over at the 12th & Florida site & more sitting in the big parking lot (the one belonging to Gallaudet that hosts a weekend flea market) at the Florida Market. Both sites are reportedly under 24 hour guard (we did see patrols). Tonight a massive crane arrived at the construction site. Apparently we should see at least some fully assembled buildings by Friday.

A truck parked across from the site (it was dark, so I messed with the exposure so you could see it better).

House parts await pick-up at the Florida Market.

These pieces are the tops of the buildings and look like they are part of a walkout roof-top deck.

I really like the black and white photo. (I think you did a great job bringing out the image).

I just increased the exposure and converted it to a black and white so the reds and oranges wouldn't scream.

What are they building, and where?

12th & Florida NE. These are condos and townhomes.

why are they getting police escort?

You too could own a million dollar pre-fab home next to an auto-parts store . . .

No idea about the police escort, except that these things are huge. I didn't see the police escort, but some reliable neighbors of mine saw a couple of them.

Can you imagine stealing one of those trucks? You'd have stolen an entire townhome!

But then where would you put it? :) Kind of hard to hide a town house...

Call me a geek, but this is very cool. Please continue taking photos of this in progress. This is a really interesting way to put up a house.

I'll try to shoot some more, but this is not a good week/weekend for me. I imagine they will be quite busy this weekend, so you might want to stop by and have a peak. The crew is pretty used to spectators at this point.

And as for stealing an entire house, the foundations are already in the ground, but I personally have never seen anything like this.

It's cool but remember the floorplans? They were a bit unusual. Still, I'm glad to see something going in there.

The whole project is odd. But I'm definitely interested in the assembly process for these things.

Prefab homes have a bad reputation due similar to mobile homes, but it just looks like some parts are prefabricated. Also, prefabricated homes are much "greener" in that there is much less waste involved in their construction. Theres some really great modern prefab designs out there. Too bad there are no companies willing to actually have nice architecture or challenging designs.

The concept behind these is really cool, I'm hoping they have an open house so I can check out the interiors and see how they stack up to stick built construction.

I heard a rumour from a neighbor that these are 75% sold.

I think I'll stroll down there with my camera later today before the sun goes down. I'll try to upload the photos on an upload site and post a link in a few hours.
