Went to brunch at Napa today. It was very good - and not slow. There were five tables seated. Not bad, but would like to see more.

i'd be at argonaut every sunday for brunch, IF they had a do-it-yourself bloody mary bar.

they used to have that for brunch at the childe harold in dupont (until they closed down - BUMMER).

they had this little table where u could make your bloody mary from a variety of ingredients. it was genius.

i used to go there for brunch and constantly run into celebrities that were all making their own bloody mary's and watching tv at the bar.

it was fun...

It'd be very helpful if restaurants, including the Argo, would mention on their website that they are only serving a brunch menu during brunch hours.

I couldn't find any reference to this different menu on the Argo website, so I brought a bunch of friends to the Argo last Sunday, only to find that the regular menu wasn't being served.

This is three times now I've tried to introduce people to Argo, only to find they weren't open when advertised or weren't serving what was advertised.

On a brighter note, the fish tacos are some of the best in town.

That's a major pet peeve of mine (along with vulgar mudflaps). I've lost track of all the restaurants I've turned around and walked out on because they're ONLY serving off the brunch menu. So what else am I supposed to do if I don't feel like eating eggs done 98 different ways? At least if they had a bloody mary bar, I could get quietly s***faced.

I usually assume that if it's Sunday and they're open, they're going to be serving brunch and nothing but.

The 'brunch only' thing seems to be a DC phenomenon. I don't run into it nearly as much in other towns.

I don't quite understand it, but I'm fine with that, as long as it's made clear on the website or such.

But it sucks to check out the website, see nothing posted indicating that the full menu isn't being served, trek all the way to Argo, search for parking, get in, get seated, only to find out that it's only brunch.

I too would love a Bloody Mary bar.

And an omelette station. Love those things.

uh-oh, does this mean I can't get a regular burger with bacon, as I always have in the past? I don't much care for egg on top of my burger. seeing as how i like precisely nothing else on the menu, that was always a great option. grumble.

why does everything have to go 'gourmet'?

Claudio,
I'm betting since bacon is on the brunch menu they would let you subtract the egg and add the bacon if you ask nicely.

I'm a HUGE fan of the Argonaut, but I was disappointed that they have removed ALL of their cheap American beers from the tap. Sometimes life (and the wallet) just calls for a pint of Bud Light, ya know?

Anonymous said...

Tom,

Unlike quality beers, bud light's quality isn't improved by being on tap. Regardless of whether it's on tap or out of the can, bud light still tastes like foul swill. Cheers!

Could you see about altering your menu somewhat to have one soup that does not contain cream. there are some of us whose systems cannot tolerate creamy anything..

i remember when there wasnt even a restaurant there to even complain about. tehre must have been something to complain about. maybe it was about our wish for something to be there to complain about?

How dare there be drug dealers and alcoholics and crime on the street, there ought to be development. And when there is, they’d better paint the building nicely. And what makes them think they can invest in more places – nobody else needed to for 40 years, so why them? And the choices of food and drink, my god, who made that decision? And the parking! And that trolly they talk about, that’s going to affect traffic when they construct it. And new people showing up, barfing and peeing and making noise? You just know they are going to barf and pee all over the place, they'll probably pick our yard. Who might trick us and create a strip joint? And what about the next generation of businesses taking advantage of the increased foot traffic? That's going to be a problem. It had better not be chain stores. And it had better not be independent small businesses that miss the point of our needs. And who decided to fix that starburst, what a mess that is. And my sidewalks – I like the brick, but where can I park for those two weeks of construction? And those schoolkids, how dare they be insensitive to adults, I never did that, nor do my kids. And my grammar in writing this! And the racism and sexism and homophobia! The conspiracy of monopolies, the police state, the wretcheness of this all!

Ah, for the old days.

You're my hero, anon10:14!

I was at Argo on Sun with my husband, and we shared the blueberry pancakes and the brioche french toast... to die for! We'll be back :)

Brilliant 10:14....that should be immortalized somewhere.

That is pretty funny 1014.

Anonymous said...

I can say beyond any shadow of doubt that the Argonaut with food items I don't like is infinitely better than the Argonaut not being there.

That 10:14 post was amusing.

Anonymous said...

Brief addendum: I really don't much care for gourmet-type stuff; that's just not my taste. All I hope for is that we can have fancy and non-fancy places on the street. Diversity of business types ensures vitality.

Anon 10:14,

That was priceless. Love you!

Amen.

All these single-digit prices - what a novel idea!

And to think someone was trying to convince me that I'd have to go for the Grand Slam at Denny's if I thought $13 for an omelet was too expensive...

Keep up the great work, Scott - the Argonaut just keeps getting better and better!

How come only a handful of places do an all you can drink champagne brunch? Or buffet brunch? If not a champagne brunch, a bloody mary bar is where it's at.
p.s. I too like to mix up my gourmet beers with my domestic fav. Miller Lite!

We'd like to thank Teddy (from Granville Moore's) and the Food Network for choosing the Argonaut to film "Throwdown with Bobby Flay"!
Teddy and everybody from Granville's did a fabulous job and we all had a great time!
We'll have a party when the episode airs - we'll keep you posted.
