I hate to suck up to Joe so blatantly, but this is a kind offer and I hope anyone interested in getting a first-hand view of the business experience in DC takes Joe up on his offer.

Hate to be a spoilsport but tne next few years are going to be really tough for small businesses as the economy is spiralling towards a recession as a result of the after effects of indiscriminate subprime lending. People soon are going to be pinching pennies.

my dad always said, "buy, buy, buy when there's blood in the streets".

now is the time to get in on the action. why do you think englert even brought up the issue?

seriously, i just picked up a victorian bldg. near H street for pennies on the dollar.

no kidding.

the economy will turn around. get ready for that now, while things are cheap and people are all freaked out.

I'm all for challenging overly rosy pictures of H St.

HOWEVER, to all the naysayers out there, you/I have to admit that the street has been racking up some good progress of late.

As anyone who follows this blog can see, there have been several new businesses opening up on the Street that represent a substantial upgrade from the crap that preceded them (See, SOVA, Granvilles, Pap & Peteys, NAPA) and there are more coming or already in the pipeline (think mini-golf!). Not to mention the streetscaping which DC has finally started.

I think this all bodes well for the street. Also, check the price of oil folks. So long as oil keeps going up, housing in the city will stay in demand. More housing demand in the city, means better/stable home prices, means improved/stable communities, means developers and business people will still want to develop here. So Neo I think its not just a matter of saying "oh, the country is in recession, therefore no small businesses will open or be able to survive on H St." I don't think its as simple as that. There are a lot of factors at play.

I'm posting this b/c I think the cynics on this blog (and I can be one of them at times) should at least acknowledge, on occasion, the efforts of the business owners to turn this street around rather than post snarky comments about how much they know or how this or that restaurant doesn't have their particular brand of ketchup, so they're boycotting said restaurant.
As my neighbor (who moved here in the '80s) told me yesterday: "People forgot that you used to have drug dealers selling crack on pretty much every block around here."

With this in mind, lets try and avoid being Soup Nazis, people, and cut the business owners some slack.

JJ.
I think the people who post inordinately negative comments on this blog (Hillman and Poo Poo you are in this category)should reing

I've only been in the neighborhood now for a little over a year. But in that time

Well said JJ, I totally agree.

Inordinately negative comments?

Please.

I go out of my way to post nice things when possible. In fact, the very first post in this thread is a positive comment from me.

And I've repeatedly pointed out how hard it is run a business in DC, and how I appreciate the effort new businesses go to.

Unlike many in DC, I've opened a small business in DC, several times now.

But at the same time I'm not a blind cheerleading section for anyone. Why not? That sort of thing is actually counter-productive.

I do my constructive criticism posts for a reason. I've been in the customer service business most of my life. And customer service issues make or break many businesses. So when I see bad customer service (like a new place opening but not bothering to post hours of operation or menus) I call it like I see it.

As long as you aren't being a prick about it most new businesses appreciate constructive criticism. If they don't, they won't be around long enough for it to matter anyway.

Our member will give practical advice, advise and provide working materials such as spread sheets, sample business plans, etc. Stay posted for the day and time!

Joe claims he owns the buildings that "his" businesses are in. Good thing all that info is public information. Why don't we check it out to see if it is true?

inked said...

Anon 434, what exactly would be the point of lying about something like that?

Anonymous said...

And what's with "his" being in quotations?

Anonymous said...

Lying is bad. Lets check out exactly what property Joe owns and exactly what businesses are his as opposed to ones he is just a partner in.

Anon 606,
I think he's a partner in everyone of the projects in which he's involved on H Street. But that isn't a secret. As far as I'm concerned that is very much public knowledge and I don't think there's any attempt to lie to, or mislead anyone about that. I think I've addressed the issue of baseless personal attacks here before.

Goll dang, those posts left by anonymous 434 are down right spooky to read! WTF, just because you [Anon 434] probably lie and embellish doesn't mean that other people do. I'm all yucked out that I share a community with you. And duh, just because the property isn't listed as "Joe Englert" on dc.gov property search doesn't mean he doesn't own them - ever heard of an LLC or a DBA?

For further disclosure: I own nothing, be it a business, a building or an idea 100%

I have had some success by recruiting passionate people into partnerships. Some people are real estate mavens, others love beer, some soccer, others are great chefs, some people are great with management and operational systems, some people are just fun to be around. And of course, my wife is my equal partner in all personal real estate. I didn't know it wasn't a bad thing to share.

Joe, you own my heart 100% that's for sure!

And to top it all off Joe Englert does even more than start restaurants/business ventures. It's been a few years but back in 2001 - 2003ish he sponsored my flag football team and used to give us the top floor of one of his past business ventures "The Rock" for happy hours. As long as I've been in DC (since 2000) Joe has been a part of each neighborhood. I now live just off H Street and am happy Joe's putting in the work to make positive things happen in my/our neighborhood..... Thanks Joe!!!

Please answer me Joe!

What ever happened to the property that was scheduled to be The Olympic, right next to Philadelphia Water and Ice? I think it still has a Liquor License application on the front, but I've heard nothing about it since.

Joe Englert said:

I had a contract on the building and a liquor license. I was scheduled to go to closing for the price of $325,000--$80,000 over appraisal--about three years ago. This building is no more than a shell, no AC, commercial plumbing or electric
At the last minute, the seller upped the price to $525,000 I walked away instead of getting into a long legal battle.
I think the owner acquired the building in the mid-70's for the high teens if I remember correctly.....just another landlord with a too rosy picture of her property on H

I may be late but I also want to praise Joe Englert. His commitment to this developing area may have economic awards, but we're kidding ourselves if we think this is the best place in town to make a sure buck. I'm glad he's here and will continue to support his business here and elsewhere whenever I have the opportunity.

Thanks Joe for debunking the myth that you were the sole property owner and sole business owner of HstNE buildings.

Joe,
Any chance of reopening Politiki on H Street?
This area desperately needs a good tiki bar and I think it would do much better in that area.
