More on Maryland Ave Murder

ABC 7 reports on the man shot last night in the 2000 block of Maryland Avenue. The victim, who was shot multiple times, was 25 year old Brandon Gaines. It was still daylight when the gunshots rang out around 7pm. Officers were reportedly close by when the shooting occurred, and other residents were also outside enjoying the weather. Mr. Gaines was the father of two small children and had recently been employed by the Department of Public Works. Police issued a look out for a burgundy colored car seen leaving the scene. There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer, and anyone with any information is asked to call the police at 1-888-919-CRIME.

Meanwhile, 70+ year-old shop owner at 11 & Constitution, NE was beaten by teens because he wouldn't sell them some cigars. The perpetrators escaped with a Gatorade. Oh, and don't forget the 14- and 16-year-old girls who tried to carjack three different cars because it was raining and they didn't want to walk the 6 blocks home.

One of these incidents is not going to end well...sigh...

Does anyone know what the deal is w/ the discrepancies in the numbers of deaths? WJLA said 7 deaths in 8 days (including the recent one) and NBC4 said 6.

Thoughts?

ibc...the shop owner's store is at 11th and C. But in the neighborhood of 11th and Constitution there have been about 7 car breakins(windows shattered for stuff on the seat, most likely)in the last several days. Although, in light of what has been going on, this is more annoying than anything, stuff is just happening all over the place.

I'm with dcjaded. As someone who lives on the 600 block of L, I'd be interested if anybody has any info on the happenings on 6th between L and K...

6th by L and K is a known area to buy drugs.

Yeah I live on 6th between M and L. Last summer the police set up a light station near the school yard for a couple weeks, which seemed to work but as soon as they left the activity resumed.

I didn't see anything around 11:30, but the police and news crews were around earlier in the night (7-9) for the candle-light vigil marking the one year anniversary of Crysta Spence death (still unsolved) - the little girl killed by a hit-and-run driver.

BTW, while we're on the subject of 6th St. Anyone else on the 1000 and 1100 block interested in starting the petition process to institute parking restrictions are our blocks? Half the cars parked have MD and VA plates. I get frustrated that I can't park on the side streets (which are all Zone 6 restricted) because DC won't sell you a permit unless you live on a restricted block.

To add injury to insult, half the blocks in SE are resident only spaces (not 2 hour) since the stadium opened. I guess we live on the wrong end of Ward 6. Sorry to rant about parking on a thread about a murder.

It seams that the all of the ghetto thugs get trigger happy ober here when it gets nice outside.

I am over at 10th and H. My car has been broken into twice in the past three weeks. Only thing taken - 1 case of deerpark water!

70 year old shop owner beat?

What is wroong with young black males these days. You know they were buying the cigars to smoke pot.

What a shame

Thomas, you know you're opening a can of worms here, because someone is going to say "How do you know they were 'young black males'?" You realize you are stereotyping here and that there's never any truth in a stereotype. Better get your arguments ready.

LETS BE SERIOUS!!!

Tell me the last time a group of white kids went in and beat a store owner over selling cigars?

No arguement necessary...

I agree with Thomas, In DC? 11th & C? They’re highly likely these kids are black, wake-up and smell question , and oh by the way, I am Black. It’s legitimate question to ask?

It's not about race, it's about socio-economics.

Sad, but true.

I cannot wait until one of these white commissioners comes around at election time and tries to deny the race issue.

ROBBERY, 12/31/2007, 700 block of N. Glebe Rd. On 12/31/07 at approximately 12:50 pm, a suspect approached an employee at the counter of a store, said that he had a gun, and told her to open the register. She complied with his demand and the suspect grabbed cash from the drawer. The suspect fled the scene, and is described as a white male, approximately six feet tall, slender, wearing a dark colored hat (possibly knit), white sweater, blue jeans and carrying a black backpack.

We live in Washington, DC which is overwhelmingly black. Therefore, I would expect more crimes to be committed by "young black males" If I lived in another area of this country I would expect other groups to be at the core of violence in a community. I don't think necessarily saying "what is wrong with young black males?" is a problem. The root is poverty. We live in city where the poor are overwhelmingly black. Mostly poor people committ these types of crime. I am assure you if we lived in a rural community we would observe more young white males committing these crimes because they comprise the population of poor people at higher rates. So to answer the question. The problem is povery, drug abuse, poor parenting and the bad bad school system. It creates a perfect store for the types of crimes we are currently observing.

sorry for the typo..I meant it created a perfect storm for the types of violent acts we are observing.

We need to work together. Think of what you may able to do. May be consider mentoring a child, joining a big brother big sister program or donate to a non-profit that supports our community. We are all neighbors. We are black and white and we are good people. We don't want to be victims and we don't want to see what's happening. We are more alike than different. Determine how you can be a part of the solution. Pick something small but please attempt to do something. DC is a great city but it truly needs HELP.

Thank you so much Kansas. Without you I would I gone Nat Turner on some of these folks. Black men are not any more violent by nature than any one else. Hell, if I had to tally murders done by race white people would be so far ahead that everyone else would look like 2nd grade schools girls. History and historical information cuts both ways. Or so I have to remind people about lynchings, etc. It wasn't that damn long ago those blacks were killed for what I did today, for hanging out with a white woman.

Get a grip people address poverty and other real issues and not race and other plastic/fake issues.

Really? Do you mean in all of history or just the post lynching days?

From CNN: "Acquittals in groom's shooting (in NY) spark outrage"

Should we prepare for massive riots tonight? Maybe this will be too localized to affect us. Fortunately for everyone, Rev. Sharpton has called for calm.

We are talking about un-refined people killing and robbing others!
