Saturday's Alley Clean-Up 1200-1300 Block Florida/Morse

No photos, but we had a good time and things got cleaned up. We has plenty of sodas and water to deal with the hot day. We also dragged a grill into the alley and had hot dogs, and Smart Dogs [for the veggies]. Volunteers cleaned up trash and trimmed weeds and trees.

Prior to the clean-up many volunteers attended the PSA 504 meeting. The guest speaker was from DPR and we primary talked about two local rec centers. The meeting ran about 20 minutes long, but many issues were addressed.

On two separate occasions now I've seen guys in blue jumpsuits picking up trash and emptying the garbage cans along H St. I know that some businesses in the Atlas District formed their own area BID, but these guys were picking up trash well beyond the Atlas District around 11th, 8th, and 5th Streets. The first time was about two Saturday's ago and the second was this morning (Tuesday). Does anyone know what's going on? Surely we haven't gotten a BID under the radar - though that would be great! Thanks.

Maybe it's DC's DPW is doing it's damn job??? I know it's hard to believe...

Nope the city iis not doing it's job. It's H street Main Street doing it for them.

I thought H St. Main Street was waiting for the city to do something before they did anything? I don't remember what. I know originally there was no support by H St. Main Street for the private BID started by Joe Englert and the Atlas District - has this changed? If this has truly started for the H St. corridor, does this mean that Atlas District business owners can put the money they were spending on a private BID to use somewhere else? Seems they would be excited about that. If we really do have a BID for the entire corridor, I wish someone would announce it so we can celebrate! How often will we see them out there? From what I've seen so far, they're off to a really good start.

I think it is the Ready Willing and Able folks. Job training/ readiness program.

why are vegitarian hot dogs called smart dogs? seriously.

I'm guessing because they have only 45 calories and no fat. Also no cholesterol, and you still get 9 grams of protein.

Nope, it's not even H Street Main Street...it's the NOMA BID.

I have seen them at 8th NE and H st almost every morning on the way to work at 7am cleaning up trash and such. They are doing a great job.

HSMS does have a group of guys who regularly clean up H Street.

I wish somebody could confirm who these guys are (H St. Main St., NOMA BID, Atlas District) so the community will know who to thank for this wonderful new service and find out how we can make it continue! Who is paying for the service on H St.? Not that it really matters to me as long as its getting done -- raise my taxes please, if it means we have a cleaner H St!

Based on history, I have serious doubts that this has anything to do with H St. Mainstreet, but maybe I'm wrong.

I would think that Senate Sq. and Abdo lofts would have an interest in cleaning up the West End of H. Maybe they had something to do with.

You would think with their big magazine spread about offering "true" luxury condos they would throw a few bucks at cleaning up the surrounding streets. This is not to sound churlish. Just making an observation to maybe help get the units in SS and lofts sold/rented sooner rather than later.

I hear you JJ, but this clean up crew is cleaning well east of Senate Square and west of the Atlas District. I mean one of the worst parts of H is at the intersection of 8th and several people have seen the mysterious blue jumpsuits in this area. Maybe someone has identified a logo of some kind on these guys' suits?

It is not NOMA BID, it is indeed HSMS. I actually talked to one of the gents (Leon) doing the cleanup near 7th and H on Saturday morning.

On Smart Dogs, how come veggie persons are usually overweight?

I don't get it.

What up 7th and H:

Way to solve the big mystery. What an elegant solution, ask the guys in the blue suits who they are working for. People actually talking to each other, brilliant.

what up tarisdaddy:

I know. Who would've thought? Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

Hey, we are overdue for a beverage methinks. Peace.

Yes the clean up crew in blue is definitely from H Street Main Street. Soon they will have official polo shirts from HSMS.

That's great if they're from H St. Main Street. This could be their biggest accomplishment to date!

Joe Englert, SOVA, and others at the east end of H, are you benifiting from this as well? Seems this would save some of your funds targeting at cleaning up The Atlas District area to now have this service in place?

But you're eating soy and vegetable gum whatever that is- probably something only smart dogs know about.

The name is lame. Call them what they are- soy dogs, diet dogs, vegie dogs, etc.
