Politics By Design: The Art Of Inspiration

This poster exhibition reflects on America's 2008 Presidential Election in anticipation of a historic inauguration. The graphically designed posters have been gathered electronically, and aptly examine the impact of technology - specifically that of the internet and its affect on the election. Graphic designers and illustrators from all across America submitted various designs. What emerges from the compilation of these selected works is a new genre within the Obama iconographic machine, one with such striking dynamism it could only be achieved through technology. Politics By Design seeks to present these works of inspiration in a gallery context with the hopes of conjuring new dialogue in a new era.

Four Perspectives: Washington's Election Night Celebration - Caught on Camera
Amidst the flurry of celebration, per the announcement of Barack Obama's victory as America's 44th President, some amazing and heartfelt moments were captured as enduring still images. We invited four local photographers to present images from their experience on the night of November 4, 2008. Areas of activity such as, Adams Morgan, U Street. NW and the White House (16th Street, NW) were captured as a rainy and joyous celebration of all races and ages alike. The ramifications of the newly elected president are just beginning to sink in to the consciousness of Washington's residents. Images by Steven Cummings, Maria Izaurralde, Violetta Manavis and Jati Lindsay give us the viewer a small glimpse into what that night truly meant! This presentation will be in conjunction with the poster art exhibition.

Cat Found

Slide1

---------------------------------
UPDATE
The cat's finder's [who found him a little over a week ago] took him to the shelter and the shelter performed some tests. The cat tested positive for FIV and the shelter euthanized the little guy without a call beforehand to the finders. FIV positive cats are hard to adopt out, and the shelter has lots of healthy cats that it isn't able to place. That said, FIV positive cats can lead healthy and long lives. They just can't go outside, or be around other cats.

WBJ: Post and Sun to Share Stories

I'm not sure what effect this might have on local coverage, but the Business Journal reports the Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun will now share some stories. Sorry for the light posting/email response recently, but I'm really tied up with a few things at the moment. Hopefully things will get back to normal by the end of January.

Put Your Old Cards to Good Use

Not a local interest story, but it is seasonal. From the St. Jude's Website-

We are accepting used, all-occasion greeting cards from November 15, 2008 thru February 28, 2009. You can mail your donations to:

St. Jude's Ranch for Children
Card Recycling Program
100 St. Jude's Street
Boulder City, NV 89005

St. Jude's is an Episcopalian charity, but they serve children of all types. Here's how they put it-

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children rescues abused, abandoned and neglected children of all races and faiths from the vicious cycle of child abuse. We provide healing and nurturing in a safe home-like environment where children can learn life skills to start new lives with new chances, new choices and new hope.

This is a great way to really recycle old greeting cards. The backs can go into your recycling bin. Read more about the card donation, and purchasing, here.

Christmas @the Pug

Announcement-

ey,
We're right up against the big day. Hope everyone's ready!
Two important things to go over here. First of all, i realize times are somewhat economically strange, but i was hoping for a better effort on the toys for tots box at the pug. So far the only donation has been from the wonderful girls at melt catering. If some more toys don't end up in that box, i'm going to start throwing shoes. Remember one dollar off per drink per toy. Thanks. On a happier note, the capitol hill rovers christmas party is friday evening at the pug starting at 8:00 pm. This has always been an event full of much good cheer and revelry. for a scant 20 dollar donation, you will get open draft beer, open rail, and one dollar cans of natty bo, natty light, schaeffer, and schlitz until 12:00 am. As an added bonus, the money raised form this party is being donated to the yellow ribbon fund, a charity which helps wounded vets and their families recover, and return home. If you are already gone for the holidays
or unable to attend please look up the yellow ribbon fund, they are doing very
important work.
Well that's all for now, enjoy the holidays, and if you are in town, chaz and the pug will be open christmas day at 9:00 pm serving hot drinks and egg nog, and helping folks decompress.
merry christmas

Public Space Hearing for Maryland Ave Gas Station

Announcement [this project is brought to you by my good friend John Ray who opposed on the various Florida Market projects, and who also fronted the slot machine effort]. Clearly he knows what's best for our neighborhood...or maybe his pocketbook. Please do attend the meeting, and feel free to contact your Councilmember Tommy Wells with support for, or opposition to, the project. The more educated input the better-

I want to invite anyone who can to come to a public space committee hearing Thursday. The goal is to impress upon the Public Space Committee, through sheer numbers, that there are a lot of residents opposed to giving 7,240 square feet of PUBLIC space to a gas station so its owner can supersize it. A gas station of this magnitude is projected to generate 2,600 crossings (that's number of car trips across the sidewalk) and will be the 3rd gas station in a 3-block
radius (and the 12th in a 1-mile radius). Plus, I think we can all agree there are about 1,000 things we would rather see that much public space devoted to--public art, green space, a plaza, anything. Besides, a gas station is just out of place on that corner.

We're looking for as many people to just SHOW UP against it. There's no need to say anything (maybe your name, but that's it). We're just trying to show that people are against giving so much public space to a gas station. 15 would be great. Dozens would knock their socks
off. As many people as we can get would be great.

Anyone and everyone should come to:

What: Public Space Committee Meeting
Date: Dec. 18th, 2008 (Thursday)
Time: 1 p.m.
Place: 941 North Capitol Street, NE, 7th floor (North Capitol
between H and K Street; follow the signs to the Alcohol Beverage
Control Board hearing room)

Friday night police picked up a pregnant 35-40 pound female pitbull mix running across the 1300 block of Florida Ave. They took her to the New York Ave animal shelter. She was not wearing a collar, and appeared to be very fearful. I've also heard that she appeared to be very skinny and underweight. Here is a photo of the mystery pit.

During the Inaguration...

...you can get a drink until 5am. The council recently passed legislation allowing restaurants, taverns, and nightclubs to stay open 24 hours a day, and to serve alcohol until 5am. Are places on H Street going to stay open? Is this [A] an excellent way for the District to capitalize on this historic opportunity, or [B] a public safety nightmare? Keep in mind that Metro will also be running late, and you can bet that every cab in town will be out on the street.

WP: Arrests in Trinidad Summer Shootings

The Post reports on arrests and charges in a series of shootings one night this summer in Trinidad. Alonzo Morgan, a 13 year old boy was killed that night.

And here is the story from MSNBC.

More on the the Early AM Fire

Here's what a reader had to say about it-

Thought I'd give you a heads up that last night a smoldering mattress behind Horace and Dickey's/Philly Water Ice caught fire and the grease vats behind Horace and Dickey's exploded with fire down the walls of the buildings. The FD worked for awhile on it with multiple trucks and busted through Horace and Dickey's and Philly- the Palace was
affected as well but not nearly as badly. The empty building between water ice and Palace was gutted. While this was going down the whole block was blocked off and all the storefronts on that side were evacuated. No one was hurt but it took them hours to contain.

And from the comments-

The fire was at 1204 H St the Philadelphia Water Ice and The Kids Boutique & SPA. The shed in the rear caught on fire due to a homeless guy living in the there. Noone was hurt but there was damage to both of the businesses. The owner said she will be close until construction is complete. The building that looks like extensive damage is 1206 which was already like that for years but you could not tell because it had a rolling grate on it.When the Fire men came they had to gain access from 1206 causing them to cut open that rolling grate, leaving it exposed. So there is NO NEW CONSTRUCTION GOING ON!

And a third report-

This morning at 530 a.m. a vacant property behind Horace and Dickies caught on fire at the 12th Street NE and H Street Block. This vacant property was being occupied by a squatter "RAY" who was using some type of heater. The fire was contained and Ray survived without injury.

This could have been very tragic if Ray or others might have been killed or adjacent building caught fire. If you see someone squatting is very important that you call MPD and report the property. Just imagine if multiple houses or buildings caught fire and it was due to a squatter. As foreclosures rise in NE, it is very important that we look out for our neighborhood because you might be saving your own house by reporting a squatter or someone who has illegally occupied a house and using make shift heat during this cold weather.

• The goals/objectives of the community gathering/potluck are to:
- Build a bridge between the surrounding community and established institutions
- Encourage dialogue (share stories, new ideas, find common ground) amongst neighbors
- Solicit community participation to build neighborly relationships

• This is not a religious event. It is a community building event.

• It is an opportunity for neighbors to come together in an informal setting to socialize, interact with invited public servants and business leaders, and honor many of the elders in the community.

• Everyone is invited, please spread the word!

WP: Nurturing Simpler Tastes

Friday's Post carried this article on the Argonaut. As a quick read of the piece may have tipped you off, this article was written a Washington Post intern. The intern's name is Derek Kravitz, and I think maybe he's still learning the ropes a bit. For example, he seems to have difficulty with both accuracy of "facts" and "quotes." I know that reporters make mistakes. Someone gets misquoted a little, a quote gets taken out of context (sometimes intentionally), a fact gets misreported. But as someone who has dealt a decent amount with reporters from the Post and other publications, I can honestly say that I've never seen this degree of, well...pretty much fabrication in a story. I'm not going to disect the thing line by line, but I'll point out a few things that have been needling me since I read this story.

1. Kravitz writes "Anyone who knows the neighborhood around the ramshackle Argonaut Tavern in Northeast Washington knows that money doesn't typically find its way there." Ok, the Argonaut is a bit on the edge of things, but seriously, ramshackle? No money? This sentence was the first tip off that Mr. Kravitz either a) doesn't know the neighborhood well, or b) doesn't care so much about accurate reporting as he does about telling the story he's already written in his head. I'm going to go with option b, and I'll explain why below. Actually by the end of the article I was surprised he didn't throw the term flophouse in there somewhere.

2. Kravitz writes "Think Red Lobster meets greasy spoon." Ouch, strong words from a dude that hadn't visited before, didn't try a bite of food, and didn't even glance at the menu. He just asked us to tell him the best selling item, and someone mentioned pub quiz. That's some quality investigative reporting right there. I'm guessing Mr. Kravitz looks upon Red Lobster with the same contempt that he seems to feel for the Argonaut, its patrons, its staff, and this neighborhood in general.

3. Kravitz writes "About a year ago, the bar's 29-year-old owner, Scott Magnuson, decided to renovate the restaurant he bought in 2005." Really? Because I always thought that Joe Englert had purchased and opened the Argonaut. Again I'm thinking that Mr. Kravitz ought to invest in a tape recorder because his notes (and he did take plenty of them) don't seem to be keeping him on the right track here.

4. Now here's the part I take a little more personally. Kravitz writes:

"Elise Bernard, who runs a neighborhood news blog called Frozen Tropics and recently graduated from George Washington University law school, said she has been searching for a job since graduating in May.

'I haven't been having much luck. I thought about going into real estate, but that seems like a bad idea now,' said Bernard, who was at the bar yesterday as a customer but works there part time when she needs an extra buck."

That's funny, I thought I spent my summer studying for the Maryland State Bar Exam that I just passed. That language about luck belongs to Mr. Kravitz, not to me. He asked me if I was having any luck finding a job, and I replied that the market was tight, and I was still looking, but working at the Argonaut while I look. As for the real estate thing, that was news to me. I've never considered getting into real estate. But here's where I think Mr. Kravitz got that. When I talked about areas of interest to me I also talked about the legal market and its response to the economic slowdown. I said that some sectors, like communications law, corporate law, and real estate law definitely seemed to be places you wouldn't find many jobs right now. And that (in Mr. Kravitz's mind) somehow transformed into me wanting to become a real estate agent. Interesting. As much as I enjoy playing one of the Joads in Mr. Kravitz's poorly written imitation of The Grapes of Wrath, I'd really prefer that he stick to the facts. He's a journalist, not a fiction writer, isn't he?

Now I know that people are always accusing journalists of twisting their words, or misquoting them, but in all of the interviews I've ever done, it had honestly never happened to me...until now.
