ANC 6A Econ Dev and Zoning Com MTG 2/18

Announcement-

The owners of the H Street Connection will present updated plans for the redevelopment of the site at the next ANC 6A Economic Development and Zoning Committee meeting at 7 pm on February 18th at the Sherwood Recreation Center (2nd Floor). The meeting is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

The rendering below shows the proposed building from the corner of 8th and H.

Man this is so awesome. The center of H needs residential density more than anything else. That can drive everything.

Yeah it looks awesome just like how the starburst intersection drawing looks awesome - it's because there are hardly any people, cars, buses, litter and loiterers in the drawings.

Oh there are people - they just look to be gainfully employed, business-patronizing, non-littering, non-loitering, reasonable speaking volume using, appropriately behaved, and otherwise civilized people.

Anon 5:11 has a point. In the Starburst picture, the CVS has mysteriously disappeared, to be replaced by something much more appealing to the eye.

In this drawing I'm puzzled...you get to completely recreate the space where buildings meet the sidewalk...why wouldn't you leave space for outdoor cafe-style seating?

According to notes I read of the last meeting, they did provide set back accommodation for outdoor cafe seating in two locations.

If they agree to set-backs for outdoor dining, then they have my support.

I hope folks will support this. The plans look thoughtful--far nicer than the giant Ellington building on U-street that similarly transformed that neighborhood (and make it look like NOVA).

In this case, they have taken pains to help make this large building fit in on that block. I like the classy modern and modest facades on the East and West ends, and those false facades along H-street are a good choice. Give the developer credit--those obviously add considerably to the cost of building the thing. Thumbs up from me.

From the presentations made to ANC 6C this month, there are actually three (3) areas set aside for outdoor seating cafes ..... the project looks much better than you can tell from the one image. The retail frontage buildings look as if they had been constructed over the years and are appropriate in size to H Street. Additionally there is ample parking for residents in the new complex as well as ample retail parking for business along that area of H Street.

If those eight stories literally dissolve into thin air the way they do in the rendering, and the building is able to avoid casting a shadow, maybe it really will look as good as does in the rendering!

I mean, that is eight stories folks! That is a tall, monolithic building, on the south side (which means it will cast a big shadow), and H Street is not that wide. Between this building and the huge one that's supposed to go up in the 600 block, we might as well just hurry out now so the downtown developers' bulldozers don't hit us in the back on our way out.

At least it will finally give H Street a name it can live up to: "Canyonlands," or maybe "Downtown East."
