Lobster and Football @the Argonaut

lobster 2
football 2
The hard to read part says $15 pitchers of Allagash. Also, soon (I'm guessing maybe tomorrow night at the latest) Argo should be kicking its last keg of Pennant '55 and switching over to the Post Road Pumpkin Ale.

Lobstah? So is the Argonaut now Patriots Central?!

Hope so!

Go Pats!

I have to call the Argonaut out for false advertising here as they were unable/unwilling to show all the NFL games last Sunday. I called the bar at about 12:30 to make sure they'd be showing the Jets-Texans game. I was told yes and to come on down. When I got there the game was not being shown and the bartender said they couldn't put it on because of other requests -- despite at least one game being shown on multiple TVs. I ended up missing most of the first quarter while running up to the Cap Lounge, which incidentally does show all the games. If, like me, you'd rather watch football at the Argonaut than the Lounge, be sure to get there early...

In my experience, Argo has a first come first served policy, for each TV, including for the Redskins games!

I've had to go upstairs to see a Pats game in the past, but it was fine with me, as long as the beer and burgers kept flowing!

You probably can't call and ask for a game to be on when you get there, but if you get there early enough, you should be fine. As you discovered, showing up at 1pm won't cut it. Did you ask about the TVs upstairs?

Tom - thanks for the tip about the upstairs TV. I didn't know about that and didn't ask, but definitely will the next time I show up late for my Jets. Maybe I'll see you there for next week's battle :)

Burgers can flow??

i also went on sunday and couldnt watch the game i wanted. i asked the waitress and she said it wasnt possible. she was super nice and felt bad for me and recomended that I try the pug. she didnt mention the upstairs tvs. and i think if that were a possibility she would have mentioned it.

The upstairs was open, but the two tvs up there were probably claimed pretty early on.

Sorry, upstair bartender did not show up until 4PM. But yes 5 TVs upstairs so all the games will be on! Sorry for the hiccup!

what a shame about the graffiti on the outside wall of Argonaut. How do you get away with that in the middle of a busy intersection?

Haven't seen it. What does it say? It must be very new. It wasn't there 2 days ago.

Tom A.--

Just an FYI - Capitol Lounge is, for the first time, officially a Patriots bar. New HD projector, New England food, etc.

Glad Scott cleared that up. What I meant is that they have two tvs at the main bar upstairs (my bad on the two tv thing). Basically, it's a great place to watch football because they have lots of tvs and it is a cool space with beer specials. Look for the roll out of the new menu soon. And, check out the pumpkin beer!

I'm not sure what it says - it looks like it says "joke" but I can never read those things..go take a look you can't miss it.

Good see they are making an effort.

But call me cheap, but $5 shots of Jack don't really seem like much of a special.

And $15 for a pitcher? Those had better be giant pitchers.

Incidentally, what is Booty? Is that the house beer?

Red Hook IPA if I'm not mistaken.

(Sorry to anyone if I've dispelled the mystique.)

Booty Beer is indeed Redhook IPA (or Redhook ESB if the distributor runs out of IPA). Unless a place is truly brewing its own, most house brands are really Redhook IPA because Redhook will allow you to "re-brand" their beer.

Hillman, those are $6 pints, so...

Red Hook's actually pretty yummy.

Just to add a bit of trivia: The H Street Country Club has an in-house beer selection, as well. I have it on good authority that it's actually re-branded from this Belgian brewer.

Oh, and in the interests of full disclosure, of course the Belgians own 25% of Red Hook, as well.

Will someone shut me up? Thanks!

I could be wrong, but I thought HSCC was serving up Starhill beers on draft. If Bud owns Starhill I'm not aware of it.

Weird, the barkeep told me the Country Club Amber was Budweiser American Ale. Of course, that was on opening night.

Good to know, though, now I can drink beer there without damaging my zymurgological credentials.

Cap Lounge used to be a solid Browns backer bar. What a bunch of front runners! Why not just become a Steeler bar instead?

Mike said...

Probably because the Pour House, just down the block, has been solid Pittsburgh territory fo-evah.

inked said...

ibc,
I could be wrong on that one.

I'm kidding about Cap Lounge and Steelers, but I respect places that show some commitment and loyalty (usually from the proprieters). Irish Times is the Pats fans haunt, like Cap Lounge used to be for the Browns. No one respects front running bandwagon fans. Why should we repect bangwagon hopping opportunistic bars? I'd rather go somewhere completely neutral.

The Steelers outgrew Capitol Lounge and needed more space. So I moved them to our sister bar, Pour House.

The Browns wanted to be more centrally located so I moved them to the Lucky Bar on Conn Ave.

One of our partners is from Cape Cod and wanted to show the Pats. I thought it was a great idea. Call it opportunistic, but Capitol Lounge is a lot bigger these days with a sideroom alone that fits 150 or so people with HDTV big screens. We are ready to host a big team with a big fan base now.
