African Continuum Theatre Announces Spring Season
Season of Strength features poetry celebration and the Washington premiere of Tanya Barfield’s Blue Door
(Washington, DC) African Continuum Theatre opens its spring season March 7 with Poets on Stage, an evening of poetry and music featuring one of the original, internationally-known Last Poets Abiodun Oyewole, and Washington, DC poets, Kim Bey, Beny Blaq and Jade Foster at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The theme of strength continues with the Washington premiere of award-winning playwright Tanya Barfield’s Blue Door, directed by Walter Dallas, former Artistic Director of Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia and current senior artist-in-residence at the University of Maryland/College Park.
Barfield crafts a story centered on Lewis, an African-American math professor. This deeply touching, humorous, and riveting story explores issues of cultural identity, stereotypes of the African-American, and what it means to be a Black male in America. This journey is woven together through the African tradition of oral storytelling. Blue Door opens April 16 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in the historic H Street corridor in Northeast Washington.
“This season has truly been a season of strength,” remarks Executive Director JoAnn M. Williams. “Our programming embodies the mission of African Continuum Theatre, showcasing new works from talented artists of color to reaching out to the community with in-depth discussion series.”
“It is also a thrill to have Abiodun and Walter Dallas on our stage,” Williams continues. “They are tremendous artists with a national and international presence.”
Born in the wake of the civil rights movement, The Last Poets tackled racism, African-American identity, and political unrest with their melodic form of poetry with such titles and recordings including The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and This is Madness. The Poets continued the African tradition of oral history that is the foundation of African-American theatre. Their dramatic performances captivate audiences and have long been considered as a pre-cursor to hip-hop music. They have been featured in numerous recordings and in music videos with artists including Nas, Kanye West and Common.
Walter Dallas makes his Washington directorial debut with Tanya Barfield’s Blue Door. For 16 seasons, Dallas served as Artistic Director of Freedom Theatre, Philadelphia’s oldest African American theatre. Under Dallas’ tenure, the theatre became nationally-known and attracted performers including James Baldwin, August Wilson, Ntozake Shange, Roger Guenveur Smith, Sonia Sanchez, Rubin Santiago-Hudson, Amiri Baraka, Lynn Nottage, and Denzel Washington to its stages. Currently, Dallas is the Senior Artist-in-Residence at the University of Maryland’s Department of Theatre.

History
African Continuum Theatre is the only professional African American theatre company in Washington, DC. It was conceived in 1989 as a Coalition formed to assist the various small black community theatres improving the quality and visibility of their work. In 1995, the Coalition transitioned into a theatre company whose primary mission was to produce professional plays for the general community that would entertain, enlighten and educate from an African American perspective.
In its 14 seasons, African Continuum Theatre has presented over 30 fully-produced plays. These plays have included such time tested favorites as Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, and James Baldwin's Amen Corner and many world premieres by new African American playwrights, including the award-winning Torn from the Headlines and Kingdom.
Additionally, African Continuum Theatre has received numerous accolades and awards, including 14 Helen Hayes Awards nominations, 3 Helen Hayes Awards, the Washington Post Award for Distinguished Service to the Community, and a Mayor's Arts Award.
African Continuum Theatre is committed to producing work that celebrates the African-American theatre legacy and nurtures the growing patronage and literacy of the early 20th Century African-American theatre tradition.

Please Take Care
One of our Argonaut food runners [we had late business Friday night] was walking home down H around 230 Saturday AM. He was walking down H Street [probably the 1300 block]. A group of four guys grabbed him and tried to force him into the alley. He's a young, and very fit guy [used to play football]. He yanked away his arm, at which point they punched him hard and broke his jaw with the first punch. A few punches were exchanged. One of they guys grabbed him and he managed to escape by wriggling out of his two t-shirts and his sweatshirt. He ran [shirtless] to the Rock and Roll Hotel. They called the cops and gave him water. They also gave him a sweatshirt from the lost and found. The four guys reappeared looking for their target, but the door guys scared them off. I left the Argo maybe 20 minutes after this kid. I saw police and an ambulance. Then I saw him leaning against the wall. Then I saw the blood and he explained [sort of, didn't get a complete account until today [from his roommate] because the guy was kind of in shock] of what happened. Really scary. Doctors at the hospital operated and his jaw is wired for the next 4-6 weeks. Thankfully his day job is with the fed gov, so he has insurance. His job also OK'd him working from home while he recovers. By the way, he was totally sober when he left the Argonaut [so this isn't a case of a drunk stumbler being targeted].
In even more disturbing news someone else [it was characterized as happening in the same neighborhood, but I don't know what that means] was mugged and showed up at the hospital. That person was STABBED IN THE CHEEK. Obviously police can't catch/prevent this stuff all the time, but maybe we need increased patrols. Muggings generally, and especially violent muggings are not common around here compared to, say, Columbia Heights. I'd like to make sure that we minimize them. Our area is generally safe, but please do be careful. I'd hate to be reporting on more violent muggings. If anyone has more public info on the second mugging please post it here. If anyone has non-public info on these or other muggings [or possibly saw this group], PLEASE contact the police.
UPDATE
Apparently it was two guys [there was some confusion]. The victim is doing ok, but is very swollen.

Kiss Cancer Goodbye
Record-breaking Kiss Cancer Goodbye Valentine’s Day Event Raises Money for Good Cause
WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 11, 2009) -- More than 100 Washington-area residents will celebrate this Valentine’s Day by raising money for a cancer charity and breaking a Guinness World Record™ – for kissing.
The event, Kiss Cancer Goodbye, is a dinner party which will feature an attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for Most Kisses in a Minute.
The official judges of the contest will be local political and media celebrities. The judges include former Mayor Anthony Williams, DC council chairman Vincent Gray, DC council member Tommy Wells (who represents the Capitol Hill ward where the party will take place), Animal Planet chief oceanographic correspondent Philippe Cousteau Jr. (and grandson of the famed Jacques Cousteau) and Washington Post columnist John Kelly.
The event was the brainchild of Deborah Gist, a Capitol Hill resident who got the inspiration when a dear uncle died of pancreatic cancer. Gist is active in the DC community as an educator and volunteer.
All proceeds of Kiss Cancer Goodbye go directly to The Wellness Community, a cancer care organization based in Washington.
The Kiss Cancer Goodbye event will include dinner, an open bar, and live entertainment. But the evening will center around the world-record-breaking event.
To break the Guinness World Record™, 109 separate people must plant their lips on Gist’s face within 60 seconds. Guinness rules require that at least three judges of standing in the community must be on hand to certify that the record was broken.
The event will take place in the spectacular private penthouse residence of the Pierce School Lofts at 1375 Maryland Ave. NE.
Kiss Cancer Goodbye’s generous sponsors include Evolve Property Management and its founders Christopher Swanson and Jeff Printz, who own and manage the Pierce School Lofts. Another sponsor is Tryst, the popular Adams Morgan coffee house and bar. Guests will receive party favors from Kiss My Face, the personal care products company. The Washington Chorus will provide live entertainment.
More information can be found at the event’s web site, http://www.kisscancergoodbye.org/. From there, visitors can click through to the Kiss Cancer Goodbye donations page on The Wellness Community site to obtain tickets.

Non-Fatal Shooting on Queen Street
WASHINGTON - Notorious local television station ABC7 reports on the story. Fear mongering reporting style has viewers wondering if theoretical efforts by the station to actually report reality have had any effect.
A few FACTS-
A young man was shot four times in the chest with a 45 yesterday around 11:30am. The victim was incredibly lucky in that the bullets apparently missed all major organs. Not only will he live, but he was apparently alert and gesturing with his arms at the scene. The victim was sitting in a minivan when he was shot by 2-3 attackers with very bad aim [they reportedly fired 8-10 shots]. It was an ambush style shooting, and the shooters fled on foot. This happened in the 1100 block of Queen, just off West Virginia.
Fox News actually does a pretty good job of putting the shooting in perspective. They discuss the this serious and disturbing daytime shooting, refer to the checkpoints last summer, but also talk about how things have been pretty quite in the neighborhood recently.
