Each and every pie is made by hand with love. There’s nothing frozen, generic, or massed produced about what we do and we take pride in that. Customers are paying for a quality product and a quality experience therefore if any customer is not satisfied it will become our undying duty to get it just right. We truly do aim to please, we truly do love our pie and it is our greatest responsibility to make sure everyone else does too. All comments (good and bad), and suggestions are encouraged!

I will not believe it until it actually happens.

Yeah! I can get a pie for Easter... not that I need an excuse to eat pie but the holiday provides a few extra mouths to prevent me from eating the whole pie. Mmmm... pie.

how can they say they were ready to open 7 mos ago when DCRA said in another thread that they only recently received permits to start construction? doesnt sound like red tape delayed them.

oh, do they use REAL marion berries? the description just says "berry" but marion berries are a specific kind. if so, awesome!

Any idea what's going on with the MAJOR renovation of the 2 buildings immediately to to the west of Atlas/Joy of Motion?

Hey Pie man,
Welcome to the neighborhood. I was your soft opening a couple of months....YOU ROCK DUDE and much success.

Annoyingmous said...

So, they're supposedly open right now. Any reviews yet?

Oops, I just saw: 5pm, not the normal Friday opening time. Never mind, says Emily Litela.

Bless their little hearts for offering vegan pies. I see a vegan bar-pie-bar crawl in the future. Expect to hear from Vegan Drinks!

We went a little before 5:30 and they were closed. Boo! Has anyone seen them open yet?

We went around 5:30 pm and got a couple of slices. Coconut chess was really good. Apple was decent. Nice spot. They had a little trouble with their credit card machine, but otherwise a good experience. Staff real friendly.

Coconut chess was awesome. Nice place, great staff, worth the wait.

6 bucks a slice? ouch. i guess it costs who do business in the city though. can we get some "frequent pie-er" miles for pie discounts to steady customers? :-)

costs TO do business

not costs who

i know who it costs

Went last night a little after 7. They were having first day hiccups--credit card machine, short staffed, limited options. But the staff was very open about letting you know there was a wait and hanging out in a place with the smell of cooling pies is not a bad thing.

Had slices of the B'more Bomb, Pecan and Coconut Chess (which they gave us free for the wait). The pies are excellent and this is just another place that makes me so happy to live in this neighborhood.

Dicape: I asked a few of the construction crews what they are building and they said the owner is renovating to sell as office space ground floor and possibly condo's upstairs. Not sure how much weight I would give it, but the good news is that nasty dilapidated building is being gutted and re-built. Its been a serious eye sore next to Atlas.

We tried the Boston Bomb and it was incredible. It tasted like a custard infused bread pudding in a tasty pie crust. Pretty much the best pie I've ever had and our only regret was not ordering a glass of milk.

Wait, are ya'll talking bout Mead's Row (with the renovation near Atlas comments)?

If so that's amazing!

So I just had my first taste. And the pies are good. Maybe very good. But, c'mon. $6.50 for one small piece of decent pie??

My immediate thought--Is it THAT much better than a WHOLE pie from a grocery store that probably costs only 2x as much?

I mean, let's take as a given that the quality and taste are better. Is it better enough, though, to justify the price? Curious as to where they got their pricing from...

As an H Street resident, I love the addition to the neighborhood but, given the cost, I can't imagine going there EVER for sweet pies over cheaper options (readily avail at safeway), and maybe only occasionally for the savory ones (where at least there is no equivalent product in our area).

Maybe I'm wrong and these prices are valid for this demographic and, if so, then what do I know?

However I have to imagine that more people than not are in my demographic (middle-ish classs, young, some but not a ton of dipsosable income) who want to see this place succeed but can't justify the expense.

Am I being unreasonble?

James: you're talking about how you want to spend your money and what's important to you. In that respect, it's not possible for you to be unreasonable -- it's your money, and you have every right to decide what to do with it. If you decide "I can't rationalize spending that much money on pie," that's your decision.

That said, before you argue whether the pricing is objectively high, you may want to look at Joe Englert's post in this earlier discussion here on FT. The truth is, it costs them a heckuva lot of money to make those pies, a lot more than it costs Giant.

A decent sandwich cost about $7 and costs a lot less to make. I had a mini pulled pork bbq pie last night and it was awesome! I got to talk to the baker and he told me that from start to finish it takes 8 hours to make that pie! 6 bucks is a steal. Its a labor of love and i love it!

Frequent Pie-er miles would be awesome. Otherwise I might just get a second job to support my habit.

Didn't we already go through this when the first Starbucks opened? $2 for a coffee! Outrageous! I can buy it from 7-11 for $1.10!!!

Sure you can buy a Safeway pie for half as much. You can also buy two Hostess fruit pie from 7-11 for $1.

If you'd rather get your pie from Safeway, what exactly is stopping you? As to whether the pie is "overpriced," we'll know if they're still around in a year or two, just as we saw with massive success of the "overpriced" subs at Taylor's.

What's the deal with Redskins ticket prices, anyway? I can go see a United game at RFK for 1/5th as much??

I'm already addicted to the S.M.O.G.Stands for Steak, Mushroom ,Onion ,and Grueyer. Or just Sweet Mother of God! Its Delicious!

The people working there were really friendly. I have to agree the prices are a bit steep for the size and the fact that it comes on a paper plate with a plastic fork.

I plan to try it again for a late night dessert and the size for something sweet might be just right.

Anonymous said...

The paper plate plastic fork thing is kinda endearing. It;s sorta the whole down home thing which pie is supposed to be...like at a picnic. Oh geez just talking about it...I'm gonna need a second job too...they're open for another 45mins...hmmmmm...oh no this is bad :P

Anonymous said...

Unique and very decent. My only comment is: If buying a whole pie for $28, and none are available, then the customer should not be charged "per slice" prices. The penalty for not having whole pies is a $32 whole pie equivalent.

Thanks for coming to H-Street!

I must say the pie is great, crispy crust, reasonable sizes, friendly staff. My only disappointment were the disposable plates and forks. The idealist in me hopes that business owners consider the environment when making business decisions. One idea...go to a bunch of thrift stores and pick up 5 inch pie plates. I see them all the time for 25 cents. I am sure a dishwasher is an investment and maybe they are planning that for the future. Anyway, I still will be back because that is damn good pie!! Welcome to the neighborhood.

Went last night. Had part of broccoli/cheddar, blueberry, sweet potato and goat cheese/spinach. All were super tasty and dangerously delicious. It was pricey though and it would be nice if they expanded their soda option a bit, something without caffeine. Also, while we were waiting, two ladies and a baby walked out because they didn't want to wait, but I think if the employee had recognized them, said hello, "be right with you", etc., they wouldn't have left. The place was hoppin' and worth the wait. Alcohol soon? That would be a nice option. Maybe beer in a can to keep it simple and picnic like (paper plates and plasticware).
