Opossom Family Death & Reward

This is pretty sick stuff. We have a fairly large opossom population in Trinidad, and I've yet to hear of one of them doing anything worse than hissing at a person. I have one that often hangs out on my back porch so we've gotten fairly close to each other, and we're generally ok with passing within a couple of feet (or even closer when it sits on the ledge) of each other as I make my way to/from the doorway. Apparently someone around here doesn't like opossoms, but does enjoy torturing, and killing small animals. The Washington Humane Society has picked up on the story, and is putting up some serious cash to turn over the killer. Here are the details:

An innocent opossum and her ten babies, just days old were stoned to death. The horrible incident took place on Tuesday, April 27th in an alley behind 1026 16th street, NE.

The Washington Humane Society is now offering a $1000 reward for any information in this case.

This is a heinous act that should not go un-punished; WHS will pursue the perpetrators of this crime relentlessly and we need the public’s help.

Washington Humane Society officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Humane Law Enforcement department at 202-BE HUMANE. Calls are confidential and a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators of this crime. The reward is made possible through a special fund called the JUSTICE FUND which WHS set up for this purpose. Donations to this fund are accepted.

Sounds to me like it might have been the raccoons!

Probably some kids on the path to becoming full blown sociopaths. When they get caught they need some serious consequences / intervention, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Opossoms eat slugs and hang well with cats, so they are always welcome in my back yard. My mom didn't like them because they stole the chicken/duck eggs. They will bite if cornered, but otherwise, I've never heard of them causing harm.

charles is one hundred percent right.

This is just disgusting. If I ever saw kids in my alley doing that I would seriously f*ck them up.
And come on - like they're really going to find the hood rats who did this. It's nice that they're making an effort though.

Possums are a pest. I assume the same folks pissed about killing some possums are probably straight down with killing off rats and mice, pests as well. Kill all the possums, they'll eat up your garden and anything else you leave outside (like cat or dog food). Charles is 100% overreacting.

It is concerning that the opossom may have been tortured and killed rather than just killed because it was a pest. This is actually an early sign of a future serial killer.

Does stoning them to death mean they were tortured? How am I supposed to kill possums? Suggestions please...

I agree. No animal deserves that kind of torture, no matter how "pesty" they may be to you.

I hope they catch the cowards who did this. I kind of feel sorry for the people who tortured this poor animal though. It must be tough being raised by a heartless, soulless, sociopathic dead beat family

This is truly horrible.

Hopefully the Washington Humane Society will post posters/flyers in the surrounding area (none are up yet that I've seen), as a good portion (most?) of the community won't see it if it's only on the Internet.

Not overreacting. There is convincing research - kids who torture animals are much more likely to grow up to commit serious violent crimes.

And stoning an animal and its young to death is torture.

People set traps for rats and mice - a trap kills them instantly. Plus a possum is not a rodent, it's a marsupial. Not really much similarity to a rat.

Oh Charles, so concerned about the possums and not too concerned about the "sociopath" kids (talk about an esteem booster!) killing them. How bout we offer $1000 bucks to build a neighborhood amenity that might be more entertaining that killing possums. Till then, i'll be collecting stones to distribute to neighborhood youth.

Django -
Spare us the excuses. When I was growing up we didn't have anything to do in the neighborhood other than going to the local park that had a few slides and broken swings. We made the best of it with what we had. I don't recall stoning animals to death and blaming the city government because we had nothing else to do.

This is so typical of welfare recipients. They sit around doing jack shit all day, contributing nothing to society while blaming others around them. The government oughta round you people up and ship ya'll to Kabul. Now that would be entertainment!

How about those kids get off their lazy asses and take advantage of all that DC has to offer. Free museums, countless parks, buses/metro rides to almost any place in DC, the list goes on and on.

No, it's easier to just blame others and just sit back and wait for shit to happen for nothing.

The real Django was missing a finger, you are missing more than a few brain cells.

If you read my original post I said they need some serious "consequences / intervention."

That means letting them know such behavior is not acceptable and also trying to help them get off the dangerous path they are on.

What part of that do you have a problem with?

Anonymous said...

Don't waste your breath on these deadbeats Charles.

This is not surprising behavior considering almost all of the kids who do stuff like this are raised in an environment without a father or any decent role models. Scolding them or punishing them will do no good.

What is the most confusing holiday for black children?

Father's day

"esteem builder" ?

Django, you are such a warm and caring person !

Who cares if you're unemployed, living in your mama's house and still wetting the bed? Hold your head up!

Anon your joke is repugnant, and you play right into the hands of anyone who would try to defend stoning animals to death by making it a race issue.

This is not about race. If you care about young people you do not ignore behavior that raises a red flag. And anybody who knows anything about child development, juvenile crime, etc. will tell you that stoning animals to death is a big red flag.

Anonymous said...

Oh lighten up Charles. I told my black neighbor that joke and he laughed his ass off. Take a pill

I agree as a black man. I dont see this as a race isuue. However, what I do see are some deep rooted menatal issues associated with someone to cause harm to a living being that cant defend itself. This is unacceptable. I would through the book at them to make an exsample. This is not cool. God help are younge people.

When I was a little girl, I used to catch cockroaches in a glass jar, light a paper towel, drop it in the jar and with the top on watch them run around. Would that be considered cruel? And I turned out all right. Now I'm a conservative Christian Republican with a "Palin 2012" bumper sticker on my minivan. People can be redeemed you know.

Palin 2012? just too easy. Maybe the cockroaches that escaped live on the gulf coast. One big oily drill baby drill rag we can light on fire.

i live on parker street. we have a group of Opossoms (possums) that live in the alley way between parker and k street. i think they're kind of cool. they mostly cruise around after dark, but one - the big one- did kill a favorite street cat that roamed the hood. it was a tiny cat, that fought for the morsels that we gave it. the possum decided that it wasn't worthy of our offerings, and killed it one evening. believe me, we were all in tears (this was about 2 years ago). we didn't kill the animal, we just constantly scared it away.

i'm against violence in any form, but stupid turds... UNEDUCATED turds, that just go fot the jugular. that's wrong.

kids will be kids... but in our area, kids are murderers!

and that too, is patently wrong.

RIP Voodoo, the little neighborhood cat that loved everyone, begged everyone for food, and stayed around for a while after eating, for some serious snuggles.

i hate possums, but am adverse to killing them.

what to do?

by the way, any parker st. residents that moved in after 2007 won't have a clue what i'm talking about. but there's history for ya...

Because this thread is pretty sad and trifling on a lot of different levels, i clearly have to ask. Are opossums irish, and possums yanks. Unfortunately all the animals are just another thing we deal with livin in paradise.

anon 3:24 said it best: "deep rooted mental issues" couldn't have said it better myself. It is not surprising how much crime the Trinidad area has when kids do shit like that

booger bear said...

i'd just like to interject that in order for these kids to be on the road to being a future pyschopath, in addition to killing animals, I believe they also have to be wetting the bed and setting fires. Its a tri-fecto you see, so if you notice soiled mattresses and small fires burning around the 'hood, then be concerned in about 10 years...
