Haven't they been open for significantly longer than a year?

I agree that it's a wonderful spot, though.

Unrelated. Anyone notice that they seem to be doing some construction (not destruction) on the Meads Row buildings next to the Atlas. These are the same buildings that the owners were purportedly hoping to raze to put in a surface parking lot last year. Any idea what's going on?

brian: i noticed that as well. would love it if that's not preliminary razing activity...

it's not razing. friday and today when i walked by they were clearly bolstering the foundation and adding wood beams on the inside as well as a new roof. so i would assume that means the building is going to stay. also the permit says its for a potential lease or sale

Saw that walking by on Saturday. It's great to see given "Mead's Row" is quite prominently located adjacent to Atlas theater.

I wonder if the owners were shamed into selling or maybe they just discovered their parking lot would not get a curb cut?

the parking lot was kind of a dumb idea anyway. the lot size for those properties is really too small to have any kind of ample parking. my guess is the owner will now slap a ridiculous price tag on the building and it will sit empty for a while. also the renovations are pretty sloppy. look at the mortar work next time u walk by. hopefully someone with a real vision will by this place and turn it into something more attractive to the neighborhood

The article quotes a Rosedale resident who wants certain amentities to be closer in the 'hood. Fair enough, but he specifically mentions a grocery store -- the Hechinger mall safeway isn't close enough??

Confused.

carver/langston: i thought the same thing. would have been nice if the wapo reporter would have done some actual reporting and pointed that fact out...

Langston Bar and Grille has been open for more that a year (maybe 2 years?). As for the Safeway comment, I don't get it. If you live in Rosedale, there is no way that you live even a mile from the Safeway (and this assuming you live in the 500 block of Oklahoma Avenue).

I live in Rosedale. Yes, the Safeway is quite close. Technically, it's "walkable" close. But it's a fairly sketchy walk along that stretch of Benning.

That said, I don't know why the person quoted said they would like a grocery store closer.

Personally, I would love Cafe Roma to re-open at 18th & D N.E. That place was amazing.
