New Restaurant Rumors

I've got photos, but haven't uploaded them yet. There is obviously something going on at the corner of 6th and H, but it isn't clear what yet.

Instead of a parking lot, it could become restaurants

The building on the far left is supposedly being renovated as a restaurant space

In the 1300 block I was told that three places are being renovated as restaurants. One was said to be Greek, another Japanese, and a third unknown. For the time being I'd consider this all just rumor, but interesting none the less.

Also, I've heard about a possible acquisition (not sure if it was a sale, or rental) of the Napa 1015 space to another H Street restauranteur.

Vendetta

Oh yeah, and they are doing work inside Vendetta (a red sauce Italian place in1300 block of H).

UPDATE

Photos now uploaded. And Vendetta is a Joe Englert associated restaurant in a building owned by Steve Hessler (Gallery O/H).

I take it you are talking about the storefront across H St, south of Taste of Jamaica?

For what it's worth (and that's not much): Maybe 4 or 5 months ago I asked some guys doing work at the southwest corner of 6th and H what was going in, and they said they thought it was going to be a sports bar.

Interesting we've got so many restaurants coming especially in light of the piece I saw on the news a few weeks ago stating that U street is full to capacity for restaurants and stores. They are not allowing any more restaurants in. I wish they would just shuffle those overflow businesses over to H street. We'd be happy to have them. Maybe we could be as successful as U street...

I won't be able to go to the next ANC Meeting on the 12th because of a lecture I signed up for. Can someone please go and ask about what is happening at 6th & H Streets? I live across the street and there has been zero discussion with the community about this bar? Don't get me wrong, I am all for property improvement and development, but there are basic concerns like exhaust from kitchen, trash (we don't need more rats), etc.

I would love a Greek restaurant up here. Taverna (on Penn) used to be in my rotation frequently. I know it was pretty run of the mill Greek food, but I loved it. I'm still pissed at Chef Spike for buying it out.

there's a Greek restaurant going in at 1220 H St. They've applied for their liquor license and appeared at last month's ANC6a ABL committee meeting to discuss their plans.

Yes, the reek place at 1220 is confirmed. The one I mentioned today is a separate rumor.

There is also big stuff going on around 3rd and 2nd St NE / H St NE. Over the last two days they are tearing all the houses and buildings down. It is visible from 3rd St / G st. NE

So many restaurants, it's hard to keep up. It's a wonderful problem to have. Does anyone know of a map that lists the restaurants on and around H Street? A few years ago, Barracks Row Main Street published one as a full page ad in the Hill Rag that I still pinned to my wall. It would be a fantastic marketing tool to keep business flowing to H Street. If there isn't one, I'd really love to see one made.

Six months ago, I made a map and posted it on my blog. You can see it here:

If anyone has updates, please share them! I'd be happy to create a better looking map with any new information.

Last Saturday, some guys doing the stone work on the outside of the building next to Joy of Motion (the top picture) told me it was going to be a deli. Which of these rumors is supposed to be about that place?

inked said...

Akire,
that would be the Greek place.

Boo, I don't consider U St. a success, I consider it urban planning gone amuck. I want H to be much better than U! We need a Pottery Barn.

I'm still waiting on my dumplings? What happened to the dumplings?

Screw the whales, save the dumplings!!!

New food options are great, but when is someone going to open up a real gym (WSC, Gold's, etc.)

Not it (finger to side of nose).

akire said...

So there will be two Greek restaurants? The bldg next to Joy of Motion is in the 1300 block, not 1220.

@6th/H [sw corner], workers there told me a few months back that it was a restaurant space they were working on. huge outdoor eating space potential on the 6th st side [sorry neighbors] which would be awesome -- though of course, that's from someone who wouldn't be affected by such an enterprise.

1309 H Street NE is undergoing non-structural renovations to become a retail store. I hope and pray it is not a retail liquor store. I do not know of its current use per its Certificate of Occupancy.

"What are the other types of italian places besides red sauce"

well, there's places that serve:
Northern Italian dishes
expensive italian dishes
modern italian dishes
gelato
coffee
bread

dave b: can you rephrase your question? I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.

The gym should housed in blair shelter. However, most schools are converted into condos. Consider the huge parking lot behind Murrays.

We need a Pottery Barn.

We need a barn! With livestock...bales of hay...tractors...the works!

Primal Fitness a new gym at 219 M St, NW is holding an open house on 5/15.
Not on H Street but in NOMA, pretty close.
