Bluegrass & Folk Music on Kingman Island

Final KingmanIslandBgrass (2)

If you've ever been to Bluegrass Thursday at Sova, at least some of these performers will be familiar to you. This sounds like a fun, and family friendly event:

Tommy Wells and Living Classrooms Team to Host
Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Music Festival

(Washington, DC) – On Saturday, June 12, 2010, Councilmember Tommy Wells and Living Classrooms will host a FREE Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Music Festival at Kingman Island Park on the Anacostia River from 1 pm to 7 pm.  The event will showcase some of the District’s best bluegrass and folk musicians, including the Extension Agents, Stripmall Ballads, Banjer Dan, Second String, By & By, Greasy String, Snakehead Run, and King Street Bluegrass, among others.

“This will be a great day of music and fun for everyone across the city,” commented Wells.  Guests are invited to bring their bikes, pets and blanket. “I hope everyone is ready for some good music and a great day -- even if they’ve never heard of bluegrass,” added Wells.

By hosting the Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Music Festival, Councilmember Wells hopes to
encourage more residents to enjoy the Anacostia River and to discover Kingman Island Park.  The
Festival will coincide with National Get Outdoors Day at Kingman Island Park, a new annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun.  Visitors can enjoy live music, rock climbing, canoeing, face-painting, biking, geocaching, planting flowers, and more.

To make the Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Music Festival possible, Councilmember Wells and
Living Classrooms have teamed with their title Sponsor, the Washington Convention Sports Authority, as well as with WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, Akridge Development, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, and The District Department of Parks and Recreation.

“The Festival is the result of a terrific public-private partnership that we hope will strengthen the city as one community,” stated Wells.

Kingman Island’s entrance is located on the north eastern parking lot of RFK Stadium (Lot 6) and is
easily accessible (less than a 5 minute walk) from the Stadium Armory Metro stop.

Terrible timing. I would go if I were not moving into my new house that day.
