Can anyone describe this place to me? I wasn't aware that it existed; Google StreetView doesn't show any signs or activity at the location. What is it, what do they serve, what's it like, any good, etc. Thanks.

Pan-African food. I think it's mostly West-African. They've been there a little while (at least two years as I recall).

Is it good? The food, the place, etc.?

I've never tried the food, and I'm not a good judge of West-African food. It's not a problem business, if that's part of your question. My impression is that it mostly serves an immigrant population. Unlike Ethiopian, which has a large DC following, West-African food is still kind of new to many people here. That includes me. But if these patrons keep returning the food is probably at least decent.

Sorry, no, I wasn't asking if it was a problem business -- if it was, someone would have yelled about it here by now. I just wondered whether the food was good. I'm always interested in more good food places within walking distance.

I've had Senegalese food once or twice and liked it; but I dunno how similar cuisines are from place to place in west Africa.

I need to try the food, but I feel like even then I'd be unqualified to comment on the quality. I once went to Bokum with a friend (white dude who grew up in West Africa). I ordered a goat curry and could barely eat it, but he raved about it. I mean to try it again. I think some things are just acquired tastes for some of us. I hated mushrooms and green peppers as a kid, but now love them both. Into my early 20s I couldn't eat cilantro because it tasted like soap and gave me a weird pins and needles sensation in my lips and gums. Now I love cilantro, and have no negative experience. So, you can learn to love foods you previously disliked. My rule with new foods (assuming the dish wasn't poorly prepared) is to try it ten times. I've pretty much found that I like the item at the end.

The prickly feeling with some foods can actually a sign of an allergy. I have sometimes had it with foods like peaches, zucchini, pineapple, and others. I now eat these foods with no problems. That said, if you ever experience a severe reaction to any food (especially peanuts [which are a legume, not a nut], or any kind of nut) please don't try them again.

If you like West-African food please do try it and report back. I did try the West-African place down the street (Daavi's, which is now defunct) at one point and wasn't particularly struck by it, but then later craved it and went back. Like I said, some West-African food offers flavors that are new to me, and I'm too ignorant on this front to offer meaningful commentary. I got a pan-African cookbook as a gift, so I'm learning.

great. with all this talk of pan african food, i'm developing a craving for this cuisine.... AND i've never had it before!

my lean cuisine lunch is looking pretty sorry right now.

Buka is decent. like inked, im no expert on west african food, but i know what tastes good and i've enjoyed my meals there. this place doesn't get much attention partly because of the location and partly because the owners are not as savvy about marketing as some of the other businesses on H. hopefully they can drum up a bit more business
