Tea Party Protest at the Atlas

Press release (Pirates of Penzance is coming soon too, so I'm told there may also be some pirates protesting):

DontTeaOnMeBanner

Washington, D.C. (October 15, 2010) The Coalition of MyNewtMen and The Tea Party Regress Party will be protesting the opening of the Gross National Product's production of "Don't Tea on Me" at The Atlas Performing Arts Center on October 21st. The group will be protesting arts funding, the well endowed Endowment for the Arts, the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities, Social Security, Obamacare, the Minimum Wage, the Department of Education, Congress, Darwinism, the Federal government and artists in general. The protest will begin at 6:30 P.M. under the marquee at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

The founder, Ralph Reed DeMinted anticipates between 2 and 20,000 members of the Movement to protest indecency, irreverency and musicality. "We must privatize the arts!” says Mr. DeMinted “Give them to Fox News! They’ll know exactly what to do with them.” Prior to founding MyNewtMen, Mr. DeMinted worked with Christine O'Donnell's on abolishing the separation of church and state and the Tobacco companies "Right to Light" campaign.

The coalition of MyNewtMen will be protesting in Tea Party attire at the Atlas on Thursday 21st 6:30 PM and the media is encouraged to attend the circus event. Atlas Performing Arts Center - 1333 H Street

UPDATE

I thought that labeling this as a press release would make it clear, that I didn't write it. Apparently that wasn't sufficient. So, just in case anyone is still unclear on this: the text above is a press release written by Gross National Product (the group performing at the Atlas). I did not write the fake press release.

This is a joke, right?

Lame.

Disappointing. The show itself is likely to be really funny, but the fake protest is just insulting.

Yeah, it's a joke. I'd just treat it as an extension of the show.

Apologies for the highjacking, but I thought this was too important not to post (especially in light of some of the hoodlums in our area),from the AP via Washington Post:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/oct/20/dc-passes-bill-identify-juvenile-offenders/

WASHINGTON (AP) — Youths convicted of a violent crime in Washington would have basic criminal information about them released to the public under a bill passed by the D.C. Council.

The bill was passed Tuesday and now goes to Mayor Adrian Fenty.

Council members said the law would also allow for information to be more easily shared between police and youth social service agencies.

The bill's passage follows several well-publicized cases in which juveniles with violent pasts allegedly committed new crimes.

Super lame post, Inked. Love your blog about the neighborhood, but there is no need to be insulting of people's political beliefs. If you are going to get political about things, at least be respectful.

I'd love to offer smelling salts and a fainting couch to any teabagging sympathizers who feel that a satirical protest is offensive (or more specifically, that a FT post that dispassionately describes said event is offensive), but since they haven't offered compensation for my proposed services this would come dangerously close to "soshulism" and should be avoided at all costs. Hopefully you'll get by with pearl-clutching and panty-twisting.

Yeah it may hurt your feelings- sometimes the free market of ideas will do that. My gut tells me that this isn't about "insulting" satire as much as it is about sympathizing with the target, and that you didn't find inked's post insulting as much as you don't want her posting about events that are critical of your beliefs.

Great post Inked. Apparently members are a little sensitive. Maybe someone can remind the protesters what the Tea Party in Boston was really about: No Taxation Without Representation! It was not about supporting ultra-right conservatives (unless George III counted as one) who actively continue to deny American citizens that right. Nonetheless, I hope they stay awhile to support the neighborhood.

2:07,
read the post again. that's a press release from the group performing at the Atlas, and the fake protest is a promotion for the show. I didn't write the post.

That same group does satire, and comedy about both side of the political arena. They recently had a show called Obama Trauma.

I don't particularly care if someone votes Democrat, or Republican, but I do hope that people have enough respect for me to actually read the posts before they leave comments on them. Otherwise, what's the point?

anon 2:46.

The original tea parties were about taxation without representation. However, the big difference was they were fighting to get rid of the taxes, not just trying to add another Democrat Member of Congress. The people of DC would be better served protesting the tax aspect of the platform. We should be treated the same as Puerto Rico, Guam, Etc. If we are not represented, we should not pay federal income tax. Sounds a lot better then us killing ourselves every year just to let a nobody like Holmes-Norton vote on the floor.

Hey folks, the company is called Gross National Product and they have been around since the 80's. They do political satire and improv. They are taking advantage of the Mid-term election season to do a show here at the Atlas.
The fake protest is a theatrical gag, just goofy stuff and from what I understand both sides are target for comedy.

There was a write up about them in the Backstage column in today's Post.

Anon. 3:47,

I'd love it if we were treated like Puerto Rico residents and not federally taxed because we have no representation. I would also equally love representation if we continue to be federally taxed. We should not continue to be taxed and not represented on the basis that granting repesentation would add a Democrat. Republicans are more than free to move here and vote for their candidates. Its too bad more of them don't.

The original tea partiers wanted representation and then ultimately independence; the leaders were politicians. Taxing without representation became the rallying cry. Its a shame that a political party can call themselves the "Tea Party" while the only true citizens of this country that still have this rallying cry is us and only us. Its a further shame that more of us do not stand up for what should be our American right. Again, don't federally tax me or otherwise give me representation. Doesn't matter which one but at least one or the other.

HILARIOUS! I'll definitely check it out. Jesus, people are f*cking uptight here. If u are that uptight and have no sense of humor whatsoever, please go back to Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, or wherever bumpkin piece of village you came from. Btw, did you know that a sense of humor is a distinctive sign of elevated intelligence? Yup, it's true. I find it absolutely fascinating that the bumpkins butch about this blog. For the spaghetti monsters sake, start your own blog, please. I can add it to all the bullshit blogs from old ladies and radicals that I don't read. Thanks in advance!

also, how can christine odonnell work to abolish the separation of church and state, when she believes that there is no separation of church and state? i'm a tard and even i have the reading/listening comprehension abilities to understand the wapo article from a few days ago. i would think a political satire troup would at least know their shit before satirizing
