Liberty Tree to Open Soon

A reader comment suggests that Liberty Tree (1016 H Street) might open very soon.

THAT Martini Lounge Rumor

Many of you may remember a rumor that I posted almost two months ago that the Martin Lounge building (1236 H Street) had been purchased by an owner from Wisdom. At the time I  could neither confirm, nor debunk the rumor. I called and emailed the owner of the Martini Lounge, but received no response.  I asked around, and nobody would admit to knowing about such a deal. Then came a post from a certain H Street figure suggesting it wasn't true (but in a weird sort of way). I figured it either wasn't true, or wasn't fodder for conversation yet (i.e., possibly not a done deal ready to go public). I mention it now because I am hearing more hard intel, and I'm getting quoted on other blogs as saying it just isn't true. I now think it is true, and that Granville's will take one of the floors. I backed off in the beginning because I'd rather come later to a story than risk souring a deal. I might get a bit of flack for that, but honestly, is it better that I break a story super early, or that we all hear about it later, and the deal actually goes through? I know what I prefer. I'm a resident first, and a blogger second. I like bars and restaurants much better than rumors of what might have been.

Come Hungry. Come EARLY.

IMG_6289
I awoke early this morning (around 6am). I texted two friends who are chronic early risers (or at least capable of not being awakened by a text if they are still sleeping). One responded, and we were headed up there by just after 7am. There were maybe three or four groups of two people there when we arrived.  I ordered the Happy Fat Boy Breakfast (which is HUGE) so I could try lots of different stuff. It was very tasty, but way more than I could ever eat. We sat and relaxed, and around maybe 8:30 people started rolling in hardcore. I mean it looked like it was about to get packed. Good job with the diner Matt and Patrick! It looks like you stumbled on a real demand.

Dean Kessmann: Art as Paper as Potential

March 20 – May 8, 2010

Conner Contemporary Art is pleased to announce two concurrent solo exhibitions featuring new photographs and videos by Maria Friberg, of Sweden, and Dean Kessmann, of Washington, DC. For each artist, this is the fourth solo show with the gallery.

In transmission, Maria Friberg re-frames the automobile as a sign for ambivalent concepts, such as progress and environmental threat, social hierarchy and economic instability, and male power and uncertainty. In her video and photographs, Friberg presents various makes and models of cars, from below, displacing their most familiar features, and exposing their seemingly vulnerable undersides. Filming moving cars against a clear sky, the artist achieves a dream-like effect, while underscoring the relation between man and nature, which forms a major theme in her oeuvre. Her focus on man's place in the natural world is amplified in alongside us, a recent series of large-scale photographs of men suspended on branches of trees, also on view.

>>>

Dean Kessmann construes blank sheets of paper as potential sites for creation with words or images in Paper as Art as Potential. Scanning 365 sheets of blank paper, the artist created an installation with digital prints, transparencies, and video. He explains, "The predominant motive for working digitally on this piece grew out of my interest in translating these tactile sheets of paper into purely digital information, which, after being filtered through the virtual realm, is output, once again, into material form." Identifying each page with a day in the calendar, Kessmann constructs a visual metaphor of an artist's working year. "This project," the artist imparts, "Is about the daily practice of making art, an act of giving and receiving."

>>>

There will be an opening night reception, Saturday, March 20th from 6 to 8pm. Artists in attendance.

I'm hearing two exciting things:

1. In the next few weeks Sidamo will roll out their newest offering, individually brewed cups of coffee. You'll be able to choose from 8-10 types of beans, which they will then grind on the spot, put it in a filter, and then pour the water through it. Cool, no?

2. Ethiopic is getting damn close to opening. I'm talking maybe less than a month.

1381 H Street to Come Down.

I just received this. The Ohio was at 1380 H Street. I think it's the building between the vacant lot and the Salavation Army because I believe I've seen some sort of notice there.

Greetings:

Attached for your information are copies of raze permit applications recently submitted to the Historic Preservation Office for an administrative clearance. HPO provides this general public announcement because of the frequent neighborhood interest in raze applications.

Addresses included in this report: 1381 H St NE
(ANC6A06)
HPO is one of a group of agencies and private utilities that clear raze applications before permits are issued. The HPO clearance of a raze application indicates either that the property is not subject to the historic preservation law, or that the demolition has been approved through the process provided in the preservation law.

HPO endeavors to maintain fair, efficient, and prompt processing of these applications. We routinely clear raze applications that do not involve historic preservation issues. If a raze application may involve a matter of significance to neighborhood planning and development, we may hold the application until the expiration of the official notice period that DCRA is required to give to the affected Advisory Neighborhood Commission.

Anyone interested in the status of the HPO clearance of a raze application may contact us by email at historic.preservation@dc.gov. To check the status of a raze application, please check the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs website at: dcra.dc.gov. Select Permits, then “View a List of Raze Permits Issued Year to Date*” – the permit status will be listed as ”New Application”, “Open”, “Permit Issued”, or “Completed.” Please contact DCRA at (202) 442-4400 for information on a specific raze application.

Streetscape Issues and an Update

IMG_5578
No doubt you've probably noticed that the construction on H Street is pretty extensive, and covers most of the Corridor. You may have also seen some comments here relating to that very issue, and expressing concerns that having construction so spread out might really hurt businesses on H. First I'm posting a letter sent by Joe Englert to select Councilmembers and staffers. Many of you will recall the discussion to which Englert refers. Those unfamiliar with the P Street issue can Google it, but just know that the street construction wasn't as well executed as many would have liked. As a result, it put a lot of pressure on local businesses because potential patrons avoided the torn up strip. Now many business owners on H Street are anxious because the construction on our own Corridor isn't going quite the way it was planned. Some promises were made that haven't been kept. Below Englert's letter you'll find an update on the Streetscape project from one of the organizations working on the Streetscape. When I first posted it I referred to it as a "response." I
m actually not sure if it was meant as a response, or is just how they always send out the regular update. Either way, it is related enough to the letter that I think it belongs in the same post. I also think the project needs to, um...get back on track.

Dear D.C. Councilmembers and Staff,

Where did it all start going wrong? Remember about two years ago, we had a community meeting where we professed that we had learned what NOT to do when it came to streetscape constructions in the city?. We had business people from P Street N.W. tell their horror stories. We had MacTech and DDOT saying that there would never be any more than three blocks under construction at any given time. They would house vehicles in sheds and off-site instead of blocking buildings. There would be great pains made to make sure no intersections would ever be blocked, etc., etc.
However, we now have EVERY block from 2nd to 15th on H Street Northeast under construction.

There is scant parking, jersey barriers everywhere, orange fencing on every street, no parking signs everywhere, equipment blocking sight lines every day and every weekend. Communication with businesses is non-existent. The D.C. government now seems to be unaware of the current plans, schedules and completion dates for segments of the street or the length of the street.

Can we please get the many parties of this project together as soon as possible. As we are all well aware, the economy is sputtering. The recent blizzards have been costly and cruel. Now, on top of these hardships comes a construction project that has come untracked. It looks uncoordinated, sloppy and unsupervised from our viewpoint. How can we get this back on track and organized once again?

We are looking forward to getting back on track and soon!

Thanks for your attention to this important issue!

Sincerely, Joe Englert, Atlas District "BID"

Good afternoon….On behalf of the District Department of Transportation, we want to bring you up to date on the impact of the snowstorms and the efforts that all parties have made – and continue to make – to resume significant construction activities.

Construction activities were suspended about mid-day on Friday, February 5, as the snowstorm moved into the city and remained suspended throughout the following week as the Round Two snowstorm hit and snow mounted to historic depths. Monday, February 15 was the President’s Day holiday, observed by the DC and federal governments and many private companies, including the project contractor, Capitol Paving of DC. On various occasions during the work-suspension period, DDOT, MACTEC, and CPDC personnel assessed conditions in the work zone and had discussions about when and what types of major construction tasks could be re-started – always with the emphasis on the urgency of resuming work quickly and safely.

On Tuesday, February 16, CPDC had a full complement of workers back on the job, with the principal task of repairing potholes and removing snow from the work zone. On Wednesday, February 17, additional construction activities resumed, installation of the Verizon manhole at the 5th Street intersection was completed, and significant progress was made on the installation of storm drains in the 1100 and 1200 blocks. The pace of construction has increased each day since, as more and more of the snow accumulation was removed and ultimately melted when temperatures warmed.

Because many H Street area residents and merchants have asked, we are well aware of the widespread community interest in receiving an updated, long-term schedule of the work activities planned in the various blocks of the project area, and the target start dates and completion dates for work in each area. All parties are devoting our intense attention and best efforts to produce a reliable schedule for you as soon as possible.

As always, we are grateful for your patience, cooperation, and support as we work toward the goal of making H Street the “Great Street” this community has worked so hard to achieve.

Our Construction Manager’s Weekly (in this case, covering two weeks) Status Report is attached.* The complete library of status reports is available on the DDOT website, http://www.ddot.dc.gov/. Please continue to call on us whenever you would like additional information or assistance.

Day-long event will incorporate elementary students, families, teachers
and community

Washington, DC – Saturday, February 27th, H Street Country Club will host an early event rewarding local DC Public Schools (DCPS) elementary students for improvements in the classroom. Children from the Payne and Maury Elementary Schools will enjoy the indoor mini-golf course, games, drinks, and snacks from 11a.m. - 3p.m. Parents will also be recognized for high percentage attendance of parent/teacher conferences prior to an all-night event to collect funds and new books for local schools.

Starting at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 27th, all guests visiting the H Street Country Club can donate a new, unused children's book or $10. In return for each donation, patrons will get a free drink ticket and will have a chance to meet local school administrators and register for the many DCPS volunteer opportunities available. All proceeds collected that night will benefit the DC Public Education Fund.

"We're elated to partner with DCPS and the DC Public Education Fund. We've received a wonderful response from the DC community since our opening last May and hope to work with our neighbors time and time again in the future," says owner Joe Englert.

Same Place, Different Time

IMG_6262
As some longtime readers may have noticed, I like to take photos of this building. I have at least 14 of them, which is kind of a lot for a random vacant building. FYI, this is at the corner of Morse and Montello. Though the building has changed since I first bought my house almost seven years ago, it has always been vacant and, um, "for sale."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
UPDATE
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When I said "for sale" I meant it. At $900,500 1201 Morse is the most expensive home in Trinidad. Interestingly, the structure is not being taxed at the vacant rate. I notice that the owner, a Freeman Hardy, lives in Bethesda. Maybe the doctor rumor is true, because there is a Freeman Hard who teaches at Howard University College of Dentistry.

And kudos to Matthew for digging up these cool old photos of the store.

Snow Experiences?

1200 Block I Street NE Snowy
I hung out with neighbors, and we helped dig out many a car/parking space. We shared many a meal, and a few drinks. Yesterday I was walking with a friend when we came across a couple of women who I recognized as Argonaut patrons (I think they are Gallaudet students). They had gotten stuck in a snow bank, but I had a shovel on me. They were able to quickly dig out using it. I was glad to provide it, and even happier that I know how to say "You are welcome" in ASL. Sometimes I really love living around here. Any good snow stories to share?

Homicide on 21st Street

Here's the report:

[MPD-5D] HOMICIDE ON 21ST STREET NE‏

Sent: Fri 2/12/10 6:19 PM

Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred in the 700 block of 21st Street, NE.

On Wednesday, February 3, 2010, shortly after 7:00 a.m., members of the Fifth District responded to the 700 block of 21st Street, NE for the report of an unconscious person. Upon arrival, they located an adult male lying in front of an apartment building. The victim was unconscious and unresponsive. Personnel from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department responded to the scene, but could find no life signs.

The victim, identified as 47-year-old Carlos Bernard Alexander of the 400 block of 53rd Street, NE later was officially pronounced dead on the scene by a representative of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
