PSA: Call the Police if You See Kids Throwing Rocks

This disturbing email went out on the 5-D listserv (but this kind of thing happens all over DC, and seem to be talked about the most in Columbia Heights):

I just want to let the listserv know that my neighbor on Hanover was walking home from the McDonalds at 1st and NY NE at around 4pm a few days ago and a 10-11 year old male kid threw a rock at her and almost put her eye out. The doctor said she may not regain her sight in that eye.

Evidently the McDonalds employee's had already chastised this kid a few times for throwing rocks around there. I know this is across the border in 6D but a lot of us go back and forth through that corridor.

I dont know if the police have found the kid yet, but I sure hope they do.

Just a heads up for everyone to watch out.

Fruit Bat Comes to 1236 H Street

Fruit bat exposing tip of tongue, originally uploaded by MDL.hu.

I've mention before that a craft cocktail lounge will occupy the space left vacant by H Street Martini Lounge. I've also mentioned that it would come courtesy of the guys behind Wisdom.  Now H Street Great Street has some more detail, including a name: Fruit Bat. HSGS reports that the place will have a South American theme, so expect lots of good summer drinks, with a tropical flair. This pretty much guarantees that you'll see pisco sours, and capirinhas. Other than that, I expect the drink list will look a bit like the specialty cocktail offerings from Ceiba and Cafe Citron (link plays loud music). The kitchen will offer up South American street food. Sounds interesting.

A reader asked an interesting question the other day when I suggested that a large portion, or most, of Frozen Tropics' readers live in the 20002 zip code. So where do you live, dear readers? I'm really curious.

WHS Offers reward in Animal Stoning Deaths

The Washington Humane Society  continues to see answers in the stoning deaths of an opossum family and a cat this spring. The opossum family was in Trinidad, and the cat was on Capitol Hill. Here's details on the reward:

Mother opossum and her babies stoned to death

Our humane officers need your help to solve two cases of cold-blooded animal murder. In April an innocent opossum and her ten babies, just days old were stoned to death in an alley behind 1026 16th Street, Northeast, DC. A month later an innocent cat was brutally murdered in the same neighborhood. The young feline was also found stoned to death, this time on the 200 block of Maryland Avenue, NE. In both cases the animals’ bodies were surrounded by rocks.

The Washington Humane Society is now offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction for those involved in either case. These innocent animals were killed for no apparent reason. Anyone who could commit such crimes also poses a risk to the entire community. National studies show that individuals who commit these senseless acts of animal cruelty are seven times more likely to commit other anti-social acts such as violence towards people.

WHS will pursue the perpetrators of these crimes relentlessly; these heinous acts cannot go unpunished. But we need the public’s help. We need someone to call us. Someone who saw something or knows something that would help our animal cops solve these two cold cases.

Cat stoned to death (graphic image)

Washington Humane Society officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Humane Law Enforcement Department at 202-BE HUMANE. All calls are confidential. The $1000 reward is made possible through a special fund called the JUSTICE FUND which WHS has set up for this purpose.

Our Humane Law Enforcement Department investigates more than a thousand animal cruelty cases each year. Our small team of officers works tirelessly day and night protecting the animals of the District. If you would like to support our HLE officers please donate to the JUSTICE FUND today.

DCist: Hot Zip Codes

DCist checked out stats from Zip Realty on home buying in the metropolitan area, and while 20002 (probably where most readers of this blog live) wasn't in the top ten (we were 36th over all), we were the second "hottest" zip code in the District. Hotness here being defined by the percentage of asking price paid for homes in that zip code. Here are our stats:

Washington 20002 $393,403 (asking) $389,608 (paid) 99.04% (percentage of asking paid).

NoMA Summer Screen: Groundhog Day

It's the almost the end of NoMA's free summer series, so don't miss out on the film tonight at 9pm, but you'll want to show up early to grab some bar-b-que (starts at 7pm). L Street between Second and Third streets NE (very close to the NY Ave Metro). This is an outdoor screening, so bring the blanket or lawn chairs.  Groundhog Day (1993, PG) stars Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell in the story of a crabby weatherman doomed to repeat the same day over and over again.

Next week: Donnie Darko.

WP: DC Walmart Plan Creates Controversey

The Post reports that Walmart's labor practices are a point of contention now that the chain plans to open in DC.

Food & Beer Pairing at Little Miss Whiskey's

CHEF GRAIG GLUFLING OF LIBERTY TREE
PRESENTS A SPECIAL FOUR COURSE
FOOD AND BEER PAIRING MENU

Tuesday, 7/27, from 6 to 8 PM at
Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar
1104 H St NE DC
$25 for four pairings

Grilled East Coast Oyster w/ a Corn, Spinach and Horseradish Cream
paired w/ Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weissbier
the master model for wheat beers: light and crisp w/ frothy yeast and a perfect balance of malts against traditional weissbier flavors of banana and clove. This contrasts the richness of the dish and hopefully cleanses the palate.

Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallop w/ a Spicy Vermont Maple Syrup Glaze
paired w/ Kulmbacher Eku 28
we chose this high-octane doppelback suggesting rum-raisin, vanilla, and caramel
in an effort to extend the massive flavors of the scallop/syrup/bacon combo

Porcini Crusted Pork Tenderloin w/ a White Wine Dijon Cream
paired w/ Bear Republic Red Rocket Ale
this is a bold American red ale w/ fruity hops balanced against caramel malts; we selected this match to highlight the bitter hops against the robust flavors of the food

Fresh Cherry and Fuji Apple Crisp w/ Brown Sugar & Oats Topped w/ Fresh Whipped Cream paired w/ Founders Cerise
this refreshing seasonal ale is fermented w/ Michigan cherries. By itself it is tart and sweet; paired w/ this desert it becomes particularly tart, so be sure to taste the beer before this dish

Food portions are small; servings of beer are 4-5 ounces. In order to properly prepare, we can only serve the full tasting of four courses. We do this because we love trying to bring special events to life and we sincerely hope you enjoy this as much as we do. Thank you!

Pepco is reporting some outages in parts of Trinidad and Near Northeast. I also heard from a friend in Near Northeast last night who said that she and some neighbors lost power for several hours.

Do You Know This Cat?

found cat (1)

A reader writes:

We found this cat tonight around 7pm at the little park at the intersection of Maryland Avenue NE and D Street NE. Appears as though she may have been spooked by the storm and lost her way home; we don't recognize her from the neighborhood.

She's very friendly and affectionate; grey and white; interesting white mark on center of her back; pink collar with bell, but no tags.

We put fliers up around near northeast, but are hoping to find her owner soon. We have her in our house right now, but can’t keep her for long; she is locked up apart from our cats and dogs (5 in all - hence why we can't keep her). We will probably have to take her to the shelter 24-36 hours from now.

If she is yours, or you may know who she belongs to, please email me at:
Traceyhalliday [at] comcast.net.

As always I'll post any status updates. Including this post we've had seven postings about lost or found pets on Frozen Tropics since May of 2010. So far five of those seven pets have made it home. Do You Know This Cute Dog?

A reader writes:

Hi,

I thought you might be able to post two pics of a stray dog in hopes of finding its owner. I encountered three women who found the stray at 5th & G NE and they decided to call the humane society to give the dog temporary shelter. I do not have their contact information, but I did take these pictures:

If someone needs more info, I can point them to one of the women's house.

CP: Selling the Future on Bladensburg Road

The City Paper discusses the condo building the Renee which is located on Bladensburg Road across from the Capital City Diner. The article mentions DC Brau, a micro brewery opening in the District, and makes in sound close by. Well, and I had to check with an authority on this, DC Brau is up by Fort Lincoln (NE DC close to the line). So, close is sort of a relative term, but it's interesting nonetheless. The guys from DC Brau recently did a brewing tutorial at Little Miss Whiskey's, so I expect they'll be down here a bit.

More on the Shots Fired the Other Night

Thanks to Chris for leaving this in the comments:

On the MPD-1D mailing list, Drew Ronnenberg, the ANC SMD rep for the area including 12th and G Street NE as well as XII, inquired about the details surrounding the shootings nearby:

"Is there any more info regarding this incident? Neighbors have reported that the people who were involved in this incident came from a nighbclub on H street in my SMD."

David Kamperin, the 1st District Commander, responded yesterday with:

"Although the victims had been at local club before being shot at, there does not appear to be a nexus to the venue. Because this is an ongoing investigation involving the suspects I cannot discuss motive, but again at this point the venue does not appear to factor in on the offense."

That's Just Sad

Hey, this is a slightly more personal post than most that I write here. Posting might be light today, because I'm just really upset about this whole thing (and I'm busy). The night before last I had a kid show up to move into a room in my house that he was to rent short term (1.5 months). I'm still working on my house, so I was giving him a hell of a deal on the place. This all came about because he's a family friend (I hadn't met him before), and he urgently needed a place, and couldn't find anyone who would rent to him for that period of time and sight unseen (he was looking from out of town). I had some friends come over and we had a huge push to finish his room. Four of us worked painting the whole place, including installing and painting new trim for his room. We even hauled up a queen sized mattress from the basement for him since he didn't have a bed, and I loaned him some furniture. He gets here and he (Andrew who's interning for a certain large federal agency) goes out and gets a sandwich from Taylor. He grabs beers at the Pug. Then he calls with a question and I invite him to a friend's house for a couple of beers. Then he goes back out to the bars on H Street and I go to bed. I was in and out the next day, and I next saw him around 4pm. He comes over and starts talking to me about a "little issue" he's having. At the same moment a friend calls (as planned) and I tell him to stop by. My friend, who is black, stops by. Andrew's little issue? He's afraid of Blacks. He actually says to my friend and me "No offense, but I saw plenty of white people in the bars, but I didn't see many white people on the street." Of course, this was followed by some lame brief explanation about how he likes black people. Dude, you're a racist!

He moved out last night. He moved to Vienna, VA. Now, Andrew's from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Which is also where I (mostly) grew up. He's also 21 years old. I guess I should excuse some stupid behavior from a 21 year old. But I'm pissed. I had done this kid a favor (I was charging him VERY LITTLE). I'm angry about that, but mostly I'm upset about what he said, and how he's thinking. The scary thing is that I know he's not uncommon. As I type this there are thousands of little Andrews running all around DC. They're drinking beers in your local bar, grabbing dinner somewhere, hitting the clubs, and presumably going home to watch Mel Gibson movies.

Race is a topic that inevitably comes up here, and I think that discussion is useful. Seeing this kind of behavior in a college student (in Boston) is troubling on so many levels to me. Part of what gets me is the casualness with which some people says things like this. I'm not perfect, but...damn. It reminded me of a story I heard about 5 years ago from a real estate agent friend. She was showing a house over by Stadium Armory, and the client said something like "I like the house, but it's still a little DARK over here." She quit working with him.

Stolen Bike

missing folding bike NE DC

I live in the Atlas district and my beloved folding bike was stolen last night, Tuesday, July 13, from outside of Toyland bar at 5th x H NE. It was disassembled, so someone may have seen someone taking it apart, around 8:30 or 9pm.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
UPDATE 7/25/2010 10:10pm
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

From the bike's owner:

My bike was recovered! Thanks in big part to a tip I received from someone who saw my flyer on this site. I really appreciate the help! Unfortunately, the thieves pretty much destroyed the bike (frame is broken, folding bracket torn apart, spray painted) but the guy who was caught with it was arrested and is facing charges. So thanks as well to DC MPD.

Shots and a Chase

I got an tip from a credible source regarding a shooting early this morning. Apparently the shooting involved patrons leaving XII. It started at 12th & G, but later moved to 15th & Benning Road. There was a chase at one point, during which suspects shot at the police cruiser. The cruiser sustained damage during the chase, and both sites were closed off to the public pending further investigation. The investigation continues, but I'm told three suspects are in custody.

UPDATE 11:32am
+++++++++++++++++

More info from the comments (I think this is from the 1-D list?):

"First Districts Units responded to 9-1-1 calls for shots fired in the vicinity of 12th and G Street NE. Units observed a blue/gray Hyundai Sonata bearing Virginia registration fleeing the scene. The suspect vehicle struck a construction area with a jersey barrier and had full air bag deployment. Three suspects attempted to bail out and two were apprehended in close proximity to the suspect vehicle. The third suspect was apprehended a block or so away. Recovered from the Hyundai was a 9MM semi-automatic handgun and a TEC style assault weapon. Both weapons have extended magazines. There were no individuals struck by the gunfire. "

This happened around 2am.

2 Free Tickets to Summer's Eve Party at Rock & Roll Hotel

summers eve web

Just a reminder that you still have time to get the two free tickets I'm giving away for this event on the 23rd. All you have to do is leave a comment describing your ideal day or night on H Street (i.e. where do you go, what do you do, what do you eat, what do you drink, ect.). Register users are golden, but if you aren't registered, make sure you give me a way to know it's you when you email asking for your tickets. Tickets are courtesy of Rock & Roll Hotel. I'll be announcing the winner Friday.

Argo Reopens Tonight

I mentioned this yesterday, but I've got details today. It starts at 5pm. Because they have no kitchen (yet) it's a short menu. You've got a few different sandwiches including the cubano, and something involving Nutella. You've also got gazpacho and a garden salad. The beer list is shorter than normal, but it'll suffice. They do have beers on tap. Right now it's only the upstairs and patio that are open, so you'll want to enter from the Maryland Avenue side. Stop by and give the Argo a little love.

Well, you've already read about it here, and on DCist, so now you can read about it in the Post. I've been asked to clarify that the stolen money (Which Joe Englert is replacing) consisted entirely of donations to an employee fund. None of that money will go to cover renovations. A portion of the money raised as the Rock and Roll Hotel fundraiser will also go to help employees. And yes, as the article states, the Argo hopes to reopen its patio and upstairs tomorrow night. They will event be serving sandwiches, a salad, and a soup.

WBJ: Wells Eyes $ for H Street Businesses

The Washington Business Journal reports that Wells is expected to introduce legislation steering $5 million towards the Steuart development in the 300 block and another $5 million towards small businesses along the Corridor. This is part of the real property tax abatements and incentives promised on the Corridor over the past 3 years. It's supported by up to $25 million in tax increment financing bonds
("TIF") created in 2007. Of note: "Qualifying businesses must be on H and contain at least 2,500 square feet for retail space."

Checking Out Z Mart Dollar Plus Food Store

I followed up on a tweet from HStreetDC and decided to stop by this new establishment that is located at 806 H Street. As you probably gleaned from its name, this is a dollar store. Many of its offerings are typical of other dollar stores in the area, except that it carries a more extensive selection of food items. In addition to the normal canned soups, you can also buy staples like flour and sugar. They've only been open two days, and it looks like they are still pricing many items. I picked up a bottle of Kikkoman Soy Sauce that didn't have a price tag and it ended up running me $1.29.  The clerk, who I think may have also been the owner, introduced himself as Muhammad. He was all smiles, and eager to talk about the newly opened business. The plan appears to be to undersell the Rite-Aid across the street. He was a young guy and very friendly. Consider stopping by the next time you need a few kitchen items and don't want to brave the lines at Safeway. They also had a good selection of cold sodas.

It's Electrifying...and Infuriating

There are lots of words and phrases I could use to describe Pepco related issues over the past couple of days.  But I'm going to refrain from that for the moment and just pass on this clarifying email from CHAMPS it seems to cover all the bases:

Businesses on H are ok to turn their power back on, except for those located at 1318 and eastward on the NORTH side of the block. Several of the businesses ended up canceling reservations and/or sending staff home but are now going to open, so if you were thinking about going out tonight, the 1200 and 1300 blocks could use a little love.

There were several Pepco communication failures today which resulted in the power down call. Apparently, they should never have been asked to power down. Tommy Wells arrived on the scene within minutes and was able to get clear communication directives out of Pepco and I think everyone's back on track now.

Also, Pepco is reporting that folks around the 12th and Linden Place NE area have had their power restored. If you are in that area and you are still without power, please contact him at twells at dccouncil dot us.

Thanks!

CP: a Mixed Use Walmart Coming to Ward 5?

City Paper discusses Harry Thomas' comments about the Walmart that is expected to sign a lease in the fall for space near Bladensburg Road and New York Ave.  Here's the key quote from Thomas:

You’re talking about one big box store on that corner. I don’t think that would fit the needs of the residents. …Whatever it is, I don’t think it’s going to be a traditional Wal-Mart. No one has signed a deal. What I think you have is Wal-Mart being a potential anchor for Wal Mart as a mixed-use development there.

He also mentions that Lowes is a potential tenant.

Interactive H Street – A Pop Up Public Art Project

Press release (sorry for the very short notice):

DEADLINE: Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10am

Public Invitation

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), DC Creates! Public Art Program would like to invite you to participate in our “Pop-Up Public Art Project” on a donated plot of land at 3rd and H Street, NE is a partnership initiative between DCCAH, the DC Office of Planning and the H Street BID to activate “Interactive H Street”. This initiative will establish a 14-block creative corridor along H Street NE, creating a framework for civic innovation; activation of dormant real estate; and creative business incubation. This project will make a critical contribution toward H Street becoming a destination for arts, business and community experiences in city design.

“Interactive H Street” is inspired by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Mayors’ Institute on City Design (MICD). MICD has helped transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designs for their cities. MICD mayors know that the arts and culture contribute greatly as core components in building livable and sustainable communities. Cities across the country create diverse projects through the support of the MICD program. Projects include planning, design, and arts engagement.

Description of the Pop-Up Public Art Opportunity:

The selected artist or artist team will design, fabricate and install temporary public displays of artwork on 1.4 acres of dormant green space at 3rd and H Street, NE from July 30th, 2010 – September 30, 2010. Potential projects may be designed for site-specific installation. Contemporary and interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses (or re-uses) of materials and new technologies are encouraged. Community-centric and engagement projects are encouraged. Note that community programming may take place on this property during this time. Once development begins at the site DCCAH will work with the selected artist(s) to move the work to another location in DC.

Work must be durable with minimal maintenance in an outdoor setting. There are several wells in the ground and utility lines that run through the site that must be avoided. The selected artist(s) will be responsible for installation and removal of the artwork at the site. No works or materials deemed to be dangerous, toxic, or hazardous to public safety will be accepted and all construction methods on site must be adequate and safe for public interaction. DCCAH will not be responsible for any artwork that is damaged or removed during the exhibition. Any work left by the artist(s) at the end of the exhibition will be considered abandoned property and may be disposed of. The site must be returned to its original condition at the end of the exhibition.

Context:

H Street, NE from Union Station to the Starburst Intersection, where Benning Road, H Street, Maryland Avenue and Bladensburg Road merge, is currently going through a major street renovation to install the streetcar, which will provide service between the Gallery Place/Chinatown and the Minnesota Avenue Metros. This corridor has also seen ongoing rehabilitation and streetscape projects that have provided significant improvements facing H Street. The corridor marks a digital and demographic divide of residents on either side.

Exhibition Goals

Potential projects should reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and/or aesthetic parameters of the site and should be well researched, well planned and feasible.
· Showcase artworks that are innovative and go beyond the ordinary art scene;
· Activate a dormant site;
· Create partnership opportunities between the private sector and creative community to support the city’s economic efforts;
· Create artworks that raise the creative profile of the city;
· Attract residents and visitors to explore beyond the monumental core;
· Create artworks that can be moved to other vacant sites around the city;
· Create opportunities for artists to experiment with approaches that are not possible through permanent commissions;
· Gateway or entrance works;
· Performance works of all kinds;
· Utilization of fences or screening devises;
· Amenities for visitors and residents – such as benches, bike racks, shade structures, recycling and trash collection receptacles;
· Establish play areas or game sites;
· Loan of existing artwork, such as sculptures or assemblages.

Eligible Entities

This competition is open to DC artists, curators or non-profit visual arts organizations that have curatorial capacity and an interest in public art. We strongly encourage applicants to collaborate with a DC arts organization or with a civic organization to provide local insight necessary to curate the exhibition. The applicant must meet all of the following criteria to apply:

1. Have a principal place of business located within the District of Columbia or current resident of the District of Columbia.
2. Demonstrate prior experience in creating temporary projects within the last 5 years.

Budget

Each selected artist(s) will receive $70,000 to execute the selected project(s). These funds are available for all costs associated with the design, fabrication, insurance, permits, installation, and final documentation. Selected artists will be asked to submit a budget and budget narrative. Please note that a maximum of 15% of the total budget may be allocated for project management. Found Puggle

lost dog

I found the above image and the following email in my inbox today. Can anyone help?

Hi there!

I'm a long time reader... and I've seen dogs be reunited with their owners via your blog. Hope another miracle can happen now (cause I really don't need 3 dogs!)

At 8:30 tonight, we found a male puggle running around 13th and C NE. He had no tags and there was no one out looking for him. So we brought him home. He's very sweet and energetic, so I'm sure his owner is out there looking for him....

Picture and contact info are attached. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Pepco Update

It sounds like some people are back up and running, but not everyone. The Pepco maps says some others can expect to come back online later today, while a third group will need to wait until tomorrow. Why did this take so long? Pepco says that we're basically all using more electricity now. Back when we all ran off 100 amps the old cables were fine, but we had to go and get heavy-ups enabling us to run 200, or sometimes even 300 amps. And we've been using that extra juice and placing massive demands on older cables. When stuff started to go south Pepco had to replace large swaths of cable, whether that just make a tiny repair, or the problem would have happened again quickly. The obvious question is why Pepco didn't anticipate this.  Isn't upgrading underground cables as demand increases sort of a part of Pepco's job? Does anyone know it there was some sort of plan to swap out the cable before this happened?

Upcoming Films at the Atlas

Tonight at 8 Auntie Mame
Saturday at 5 Charlotte's Web
Saturday at 8 Everybody's Fine (Stanno Tutti Bene)

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased online or at 202.399.7993 ext 2

You know what's great about movies at the Atlas? Air conditioning.  That and a chance to see great movies for cheap in a casual setting, but still on the big screen. I went with friends to see Breakfast at Tiffany's, and we had a great time. Strollers, lawn chairs, and blankets are welcome, as picnic dinners. Beer and wine are available for purchase at the Atlas.

Design the Pizza of the Week at Liberty Tree

Pizza

I mentioned this a while back, but I thought we could all use a reminder as the heat may have melted a few brain cells. Liberty Tree (1016 H Street) runs an awesome pizza of the week contest. Name your pizza, list the toppings, and get a free pie if your pizza is chosen as the pizza of the week.

Argo News & Store

Plenty of news from the Argo, which is currently deciding which chilled soup to serve on the new menu. Obviously the answer is gazpacho. But if you disagree you can vote otherwise (or vote with me) on their website. In other news Shaaren suffers fire anxiety after the Pepco exploding manhole debacle, and the team delivers shirts, mugs, and shot glasses, while construction continues. Why not get your own cool Argo gear.

GOG Mention Loteria de Amor

The Going Out Gurus discuss tonight's game and show at Palace of Wonders. I wrote about it over the weekend. Doors open at 6:00 PM, pre-show with Lucha Liberace 8:30pm, show/game 9pm. 1210 H Street.

Pepco: No Rest for the Weary

We've all been reading about, or experiencing,  Pepco outages. I just saw the following comment from a reader:

I live near 13th and H, and I have been without partial power INCLUDING AC since 10:30 PM Last Night ....this is getting ridiculous and I could barely sleep last night and its sweltering now as we speak...I really can't afford to book a hotel, but I may have to so I don't suffer heat exhaustion!-the heat is just unbearable and all the items in my refrigerator has gone bad on top of that .....awesome

The first reports of an outage in this area came in at 8pm last night. Pepco appears to be working on it, but some people have clearly been without power (or full power) for at least 26 hours. This is during a massive heatwave. I hope everyone can at least power their fans. I do urge people to check in on their elderly neighbors.  This kind of heat can kill under certain conditions, and the very young and very old are most at risk.
