Sorry for the hijack but I thought it would be good to get a discussion going on news that DC United is looking at Florida Ave Market, among other locations, as the site of a new soccer stadium.

Eh, you're not really all that sorry about the hijack.
Jan 20, 2011, 10:34:00 AM
Thanks for the hijack. I hope DC United get the Florida Ave location unless they seriously redevelop the market. The market gives me the creeps and I'm convinced that 75 percent of the stuff there at the Sunday market is stolen.
Someone in the comments of that post mentioned that if United tried to get the Florida site that there would be political pushback. Anyone know why? I still think they should put the stadium at the Hechinger Mall site and get rid that that aweful Safeway (although its not an issue anymore because This open!)

Jess, why do you think it's all stolen? Are you straight-up racist or just generally afraid of poor people? You're certainly willfully ignorant. If it creeps you out, there are some fine malls in Pentagon City you should check out.
FLA market provides more benefits for REAL people than a soccer stadium, which will only make this neighborhood unbearable during games: parking, drunks, restaurants full, etc.
The best part of this hood is its potential for realness, of different types of people mixing and going about their lives. The worst part is yuppies trying to remake other people's lives in their own narcissistic, privileged, and ultimately, empty and boring image.

FLA market provides more benefits for REAL people than a soccer stadium...
Hey! I thought REAL people listened to country music, watched NASCAR, and shopped at Wal-Mart. Now you're telling me they're receiving stolen goods at the Florida Market?
Great news!

i too hope that they build the stadium @ FLA market. by no means is the city interested in investing in the current market there. I shop for food there and enjoy the discounted prices, but in terms of our real estate values, it's becoming detrimental to the increase in our home values, not to mention, a complete eyesore.
Option A: Somehow convince the city to invest in the reviving the current physical state of the market, renovating buildings, etc.
Option B: Move the market to a new spot, build the stadium.
Likely option B will happen.
