Editorial Note on Comments

IMG_3530

I think we've taken a deep enough breath (I hope) on the comments. So I'm now removing the registered users requirement. I personally hate having to register in order to comment on blogs because it's a pain  (in part because I constantly forget my passwords). I'm removing that requirement, but I will be more aggressive in removing mean or obscene comments for a time. Frozen Tropics is intended to be a a friendly community space, not a space for trolls, or those who seek to fight some private war. Let's keep it that way. Play nice guys.

THANK YOU Inked! I think having to register an alias stifles communications on here tremendously and quite frankly makes your blog much less interesting. The free exchange of comments and ideas is what keeps Frozen Tropics interactive, engaging and alive. The best thing you can do is to "be more aggressive in removing mean or obscene comments." I appreciate the free exchange of ideas again!

I like reading this blog much more without all the drama. If making people register a handle before commenting cuts down on the drama, I'm all for it. Inked, please reconsider.

I never understood the whole tag name anyway in that everyone on here is anonymous. Can't you change your name everytime you post? What if you use someone elses name? I think the most important things are 1) comments should first respect that Inked wishes for her blog to be "a friendly community space, not a space for trolls, or those who seek to fight some private war" and 2) if people can't abide by that Inked removes the comments that are offensive to her. It is her blog to do that, but I for one, appreciate the ease of appropriatly commenting annonymously.

Thanks. I think the large comment section adds a lot to the blog. I do, however, agree that recent months have seen an increase in the number of trollish comments. I think selectively removing comments (at your discretion entirely) is the best compromise.

Speaking for myself, I think people are more likely to comment and contribute to discussion if they don't have to register, which is great if they are actually contributing and not just trolling.

I realize it's more effort for you to have to keep a tight lid on the comments, but we all appreciate your hard work. :)

Could an anonymous poster please tell me what the story is with the old Will Power building and who exactly has been paying the bills to have all those treadmills plugged in this whole time?

H St could really use a convenient gym option I'm surprised nobody has tried to fill that void yet.

Good Job Marty! Mission Accomplished... you managed to defeat all the odds and brought back some respectability to this blogsphere. I am proud of you and you are like a son to me!

Ditto Campy's comment on H Street needing a gym.

Campy,
that's Anwar Saleem's building. I'd say there's a decent chance it might reopen as a gym in the future.

inked,

Are you speculating or have you heard we may finally be getting a gym here, which would be awesome? That's a nice building and I've never understood why the owner has left it vacant for the past couple years. I'm sure lots of new spots have opened since the old gym closed that would have opened there if he'd made it reasonably available.

Inked, i read this blog periodically. A great source of information, but I'm always amazed at how people constantly insult and disrespect each other. why only take a pause when someone started insulting YOU? if you were equally sensitive about your readers, perhaps you would have done this long ago and made it permanent.

Jim,
if you had been following more regularly you would know that I took certain steps around New Years and in the weeks after to halt certain behaviors. At that time the comments were not directed towards me. To suggest that you are not that familiar with the recent history of those actions, and that you are further unfamiliar with actions I have taken in the past when individuals (some readers, some not) have been defamed, or harassed in the comments. My particular post here doesn't mention me except to say that I dislike comment registration, and often forget passwords. I previously mentioned that I had felt attacked because I thought it conveyed the absurdity of the situation. I had no horse in the race, but was pulled in personally (and Frozen Tropics was pulled in) to some private war by anonymous people I've likely never met because they objected to a management change at a local bar.

I have always sought to be sensitive to the feelings of readers, and other community members. I try to have a high threshold for removal (because I depend on the community to self-correct, and I value a free civil exchange of ideas), but I feel that a few people have recently gotten so out of hand that I may need to temporarily lower that threshold in order to redirect the tone of the comments in a more civil manner. Ultimately it's my blog, and I dictate the policies. When you run your own you can make whatever comment rules you like.
