Early Reviews of Toki Underground

Check out these two from The Hill is Home and Washingtonian. Toki Underground officially opens Friday.

Ramen was good! Not Ippudo NYC good, but it was good! Especially with he pork belly! The dumplings were just ok. Drinks and service (bar and wait staff) were fantastic! The decor / vibe was great as well. Need moochi on the desert menu. Other than that welcome to the neighborhood!

The main issue with the dumplings -- rice dough was not rolled out enough, so they were too thick and chewy. Good dumpling innards though -- I'm sure they'll get better. I also had pork cheek and liked it. The kimchi ramen was very yummy. The house sake is fairly cheap, but also very sweet. The place's decor was wonderful. Overall, I'm pretty excited about this place. Of course, it'll be insane as soon as it opens, and become another place on H I can't get into; so I'm glad I got to go now.

Regarding crowds in general. I should probably rethink my eating out schedule. Usually I save it for weekends. It would probably make sense for me to do it during the week to avoid crowds, not have to cram in cooking after work, and spice up an otherwise uneventful weeknight. Then I can cook on weekends when I have more time and maybe I would start to make better food

dave b-- that's exactly what we do. It's gotten too bananas on Friday and Saturday night to eat out on H, at least for us, so we avoid the hassle and usually cook in on the weekends. We go out once or twice during the week, when we get specials, can actually find a table, get our food on time, etc. Not only is it better for us, I think it helps the businesses to have their income spread throughout the week.

Really annoyed that it wont be open for lunch. I envision this place being too packed in the evenings so I will probably avoid. Also, ramen seems more like lunch to me.

Re: ramen seeming like lunch, I guess it's all up to the individual; but to me good noodle soups are just what you want the evening meal to be: comforting, restorative, and yummy all at the same time.

Re: being open for lunch, I also wish they were open for lunch. I'd go in a heartbeat. But I suspect the reason they're not open for lunch is because they'd like to sleep. Half their kitchen space is probably tied up making stock around the clock; at mid-day, the other half is probably occupied doing prep work for the evening. Maybe if they're so successful they can afford to have people in doing prep during the night . . .

I went to Toki Underground last night and it was pretty good. Only I would make some recommendations - I think they should have the condiments ready for the dumplings and ramen soup like other restaurants do. Also, I ordered a veg ramen soup... I only found one mushroom, three tofus, three cucumbers... it was not enough. I feel that they should add more veggies in the soup. Other than that, it was good that I would come back again.
