Mugging & Assault at 13th & G Last Night

From MPD:

At approximately 8:40 P.M., two female victims were approached by two male suspects. The suspects demanded their property, the victims refused, at which time a physical struggle ensued. During the struggle one of the victims was stabbed three times. The victim was transported to the hospital, with non-life threatening injuries. The suspects were last scene running east on Maryland Avenue. The case is being investigated by the First District Detective's Office.

I can't locate the report, but someone stated that one of the women maced her attacker(s) prior to the stabbing. The same person said the stab wounds were to the victim's chest and arms.

BTW, if anyone is missing an older green Coach purse I found it (empty) discarded next to a trashcan around 7pm last night.

The Washington Post confirms that the woman sprayed her attackers with mace.

NorthWest or NorthEast?

Why we discuss Northwestissues all of the time on this blog. Did you wander off from POP or something?

inked said...

drcode,
everything here is NE unless I specify otherwise.

Running east on Maryland probably means they either live in or have friends in Trinidad

they could also live in that area over near RFK. I'd believe Trinidad if they were running north.

Wow, that's two blocks from my house. We were walked to Sticky Rice at 8:20 last night down G Street, turning up to H at 14th. Frightening.

There was a group of unruly teens/young men on the west side of 15th between G and H. I doubt it is related, but the sixth sense kicked in and we decided against walking up 15th to avoid them.

Stay vigilant, everybody. Are there ever "take back the night" -type walks after these kinds of incidents?

I think you mean 'discarded' not 'disguarded.'

It happened in NW and the dudes ran 20 something blocks and were spotted on Maryland Ave heading east

sorry for the snark

Im always curious what stabbed means when used on this blog. It seems to be used pretty loosely around here. Like did the chick get shanked with a knife in the abdomen or did her hand get cut? Because if it's a cut hand, that is not a stabbing....it's a cut hand.

9:34,
thanks. Sorry, I was still groggy.

9:58,
I used the verb stab because it's the word MPD used. I'm not sure what it means in this context.

8:58,
really? Because Maryland never passes through Trinidad.

I live about a block away from where this happened and when I came home last night the firemen were hosing down the sidewalk to wash away the blood, so I'd say it was more than a cut hand. And even if it was just a cut hand, this type of activity is unacceptable.

Damn. Between that and the shooting last week this block/alley has seen more action now than in the past few years. Been seeing more folks - out of towners and drunks walking through the alley recently, and it is a pretty good area for a stickup.

and this is why I say carrying the pepper spray that is currently allowed in DC is a useless. unforch, you arent allowed to have true mace in DC cause the cops are afraid it will be used against them.

Overall, its better to either just run away or give them the money/purse/wallet.

I think that purse might be my neighbor's! She was held up on her own front porch after getting home from work (bartender) at 4am. Had her whole life in that thing, not to mention all her tip money from that night.

It was a while ago, but I'll ask if it was green.

get ready for the warm weather CRIME WAVE. happens every hear, thugs and criminals stay inside all winter and hibernate, as soon as it gets nice outside they start mugging people and shooting each other! I really hope this year is different...

It would be nice if the cops didn't have a "that's just how things are around here, get used to it" attitude. I get they see crazy stuff every day and are probably pretty jaded. I also understand they can't be everywhere at once, but whenever I interact with the cops after these types of incidents they always say things like "well, you shouldn't have moved over here" instead of "we're on top of this and we'll do what we can to stop it". Too many Herc's and not enough McNulty's.

Anon 12:14pm -- maybe it's the particular cops you're talking to? I've had lots of opportunities to interact with patrol officers, my PSA lieutenant, and the district commander, and I've never gotten responses like that. In fact, nearly all of them make the argument that it's a lot better than it used to be already.

The only thing I ever hear from the police that sounds like that is repeated frustration that they keep catching the same perps over and over and over. Many cops are depressed over repeatedly catching the same folks in the act of committing crimes, only to see them quickly back in the neighborhood doing it some more.

I could not disagree with you more. Last year on my block we had one or two car break-ins over a two week period. The cops increased there presence in the area and had a pretty good idea from detective work who the perps were. Sure enough, the perps tried getting into another car a few days later and had a swarm of both bike cops and squad car cops on top of them less than 2 minutes after a neighbor called 911 to report the break-in (while it was in progress).

Long story short, one perp was arrested before ever getting out the car while the other got chased three blocks before finally getting tackled by a bike cop who took off after him.

So, yeah, its easy to sit back, waive your hand, and criticize cops based on cliched stereotypes rather than empirical evidence. But the reality is more complicated: there are lazy cops sure, but there are more than a few dedicated cops out there who really bust their asses for the community.

I hope this woman makes a speedy recovery and maybe gets a benefit thrown for her at the Pug or one of the other bars so we can show her some love for standing up to the dirtbag element in the community.

We should all be so courageous and tough as to spray/taser or get all Joe Pesci on these sleazeballs when they come around. Maybe then they'd get the hint that they are not going to get away with this crap without getting seriously injured in the process.

I'm betting the two perps were teenage boys with no parents or at least no "active" parents.

Chris and JJ - I think you are right that I probably just happened to interact with a couple of the bad apples. These were two interactions that happened in the last couple weeks and their reaction was frustrating but I do realize the vast majority of cops are doing a good job. Things are much quieter around here than they were when I moved in a few years ago, so they must be doing something right.

Great idea JJ !!! I hope that we can show her some support. I think that she was brave to fight back.

My family lives 70ft from that intersection, that would explain all the fire truck/police related noise outside last night. Warmer weather is right around the corner.....beginnings of a long Spring and Summer. Well wishes to the lady who was injured.

It's interesting that there was an incident right there. I live on Linden Pl. facing the Autozone and there is a patrol car sitting in that lot pretty much all night while the bars are open and most of the day for that matter.

Unfortunately all it takes is an opportunistic person with bad intentions to cause problems.

I hope the person who was stabbed makes a full recovery and the assailants get caught.

As a property owner on the H St. Corridor for over 17 years, why is it that we are supposed to feel safe with the police patroling IN VEHICLES?? Every corner in NYC has police officers on foot patrol! We really need to demand more of a presence on foot...within EVERY BLOCK! The model is not that difficult! And no, i'm not a white woman..i'm a very proud black man! has nothing to do with race..just common sense preventative measures of city living!

here here. get the fuck out of your patrol cars, cops. you are like overpaid taxi drivers who don't pick up passengers. get out. walk. meet people. stop driving around. honestly, i've seen very few police walking around the streets around H St.. i'm not say they don't. i'm saying it's not sufficient by any means. i think they don't like it, because it involves interaction with the public. there are exceptions, but many cops just don't want to face the public.
