H Street Farmers Market Returns Saturday

IMG_2958

The H Street Freshfarm Market returns early this year. Starting this Saturday you can venture out for a bigger and better market.

9am-12pm
625 H Street (south side of the street).
Details on changes and improvements after the jump.

It’s been a long winter, so come out, shop, and visit with your favorite farmers and producers, friends and neighbors. This year we are adding new two new producers!

· Carnivore Barbeque (by the Md-based Gepetto Catering) is joining us with slow cooked local meats (pulled pork and baby back ribs, smoked chickens, smoked brisket and homemade sides).
· Mark’s Kettle-Korn is also new, and will be popping locally sourced popcorn on-site. Mark sells only one flavor – salty-sweet, and trust us, it is delicious.

Red Apron Butchery will be joining the market every week (rather than every-other-week as they did last year). In the near future, they will be selling breakfast sandwiches alongside its usual line up of cured meaty delights. Copper Pot, with handmade pastas, sauces, and jams, will be at market every other week.

Special for opening day we will have Dolcezza Gelato. Chefs at Market are Suzanne Simon + Bettina Stern of Loulies who will show you how to make sauted Swiss chard with spring garlic and chick peas. This is their first of a three part series H Street NE demos, Family Cooking with Loulies.

Maybe they should run past noon for slackers like me who dont get up until 11 (or so) on the weekends.

Maybe slackers should get up earlier if they are really that interested in farmers market goods...most of these farmers drive several hours into town and need to pack up and drive back home at some point; some have to reposition to another market location as well.

It's really up to them. I would know I would buy more stuff from the market if it were open later. Noon rolls around pretty quick on Saturday for somebody who has a lot of housework/family work/work work to do.

Agreed, ends way too early.

Another great option is the farmers market in the RFK stadium parking lot, just off of Benning Road. It's open most of the year on Saturdays. Very reasonable prices.

I asked about extending the hours a few weeks back and was told that in the past, the market has received very little traffic between 11 and 12 and so it would be hard to justify going until 1 or 2. Perhaps demand will be greater this year as there is surely more weekend daytime traffic than there was a year go, but feel free to share your opinion with the market folks this Saturday or to email HStNE@freshfarmmarkets.org .

A lot of these farmers and vendors tend to multiple markets on the weekend, so it's a bit unfair to keep them into the afternoon. By ending at noon, they can do an afternoon market somewhere else in the city. It's way too early for me as a late riser, but makes me feel lucky and productive the Saturdays I do get up in time! Looking forward to fresh greens

Why would a person go to RFK for the same stuff that they can get at the Florida market? It's the same stuff. The H street market is direct from the farmer or producer.

meh. closes too early. i just go to whole foods. i would love to support them, but the hours and product availability are for capitol hill hippies. i'm a real man. you'll find me at whole foods on saturday at around 6:30 p.m., after i've attended to all my other real life responsibilities.

My pup wakes me up at 6AM regardless of my hangover. I'll be there picking up some sweet meats.

Saturday mornings are for Frager's and doing housework before it gets too hot. I will try to make it at least once this year, though.

There is some damn good food at the farmer's market. I'm looking forward to grilling Saturday evening, with gelato for desert, and having a fresh egg omelette Sunday.

Sorry poo, a "real man" has enough self-confidence that he doesn't feel the need to incessantly remind everyone why he's superior to them.

"Real Men" shop at Whole Foods? That is funny stuff.

This market is awesome! The farmers and offerings are great, and the community that comes to market has steadily increased each year. So glad to see they are opening early this year. The hours are perfect for my family with a baby and dog who enjoy morning walks.
