Streetscape Update, Paving 8th-13th

DSC_0087

You've likely noticed the new trees and streetlights decorating the Corridor. Well, the whole area is about to get another big positive jolt. The milling and final paving of the south side of H Street from 8th to 13th begins today. Now, this does mean that you won't (temporarily) be able to park on the north side of that stretch of H Street from 7am-7pm. But that's a small price to pay to finally have H Street looking great. How excited are you guys about this?

VERY!
What's the deal with the street lamps on the east end of H (between 14th and 11th-ish). Will they be putting in street lamps similar to those already on the west end?

Really looking forward to it!

Good, now I can drive down H St again without worrying about tearing my car up.

It has been a very good investment. And now the light at the end of the tunnel.

H-street is now built on a brand-spanking-new foundation down to dirt, with all-new utilities. Good now for a lifetime.

Think H-street has taken off yet?

This is great. What's the timeline for the completion of 13th-15th? I know the streetscape winds up in September, but I wonder if the final paving will be sooner.

Of course in order to run the streetcars they will have to tear up the sidewalks and planters to put in the poles to support the overhead wires. Then again they could have the street cars entirely run on AAA batteries or pulled by clydesdales.

I know you're joking, but for the record, the poles for the wire are already in place - they just need to be modified with the arm for the wire.

Are those really the poles that will hold the wires? They seem so short!

(Also, have the underground feeder cables been installed yet?)

Believe they are plenty high. See some plans on page 9 of this report.

I think there are lines underneath already, but would obviously need to be hooked up to the power source substations.

The street still looks nasty. The buildings look gross.

Okay, has anyone else noticed that in certain situations (like on PoP blog for example) whenever progress in the H Street area is mentioned, haters come out of the woodwork (see Anon 7:41 above)? What is the deal with that? I mean really, when I go on PoP (and I think its a great blog) and see those people argue that "you shouldn't pay "$X" for that english basement near H Street because you can get something in Petworth for the same price," I'm thinking to myself "I've been through Petworth and it aint exactly Georgetown either Buddy so you can shove it. I think H street area looks much better than Petworth. Its like we're stealing the thunder from NW by being the new trendy neighborhood and like the pretty, popular girl who is pushed aaside in high school when a prettier girl comes to town, they can't take it!

There's a whole lot of H Street envy among the commenters on that blog, and from PoP himself (notice how he does a huge post whenever there's crime in H Street, but rarely does that with any other neighborhood, including his own).

It mostly stems from jealousy.

I think PoP is generally good about covering H Street and fair in reporting crime.

There are, however, a lot of people on that blog who bought in Petworth/CH outskirts thinking it was going to be the next big thing and now have a little remorse seeing how H Street is exploding. Some of them admit they are a bit jealous; others choose to drink the haterade.

I think PoP does a good job on covering H St. Definitely a lot of H st haters on PoP though.

It's not H St haters on PoP - far too many seem to hate DC overall. You just notice when they bash your neighborhood.

(I live it Petworth. It makes me insane that so many commenters there bash Petworth non-stop.)
