Off-topic, but a request for suggestions (this has come up for me a lot lately): say you're coming home from work very late, like at 3am on a weekday. What food options are there? Are there any in our neighborhood? What about in the city? Or is a trip to the suburbs the only option?

Don't get too discouraged. There will be some soggy bottomed boys in my basement tonight! No music, though.

I've been hearing from multiple sources that Toyland is going out of business. Does anyone have any info?

10:28,
I've heard the opposite. I wish the best to the former partners. You can find Erin at Toki underground, or the Queen Vic. She's an excellent bartender. If you want to support her, please visit her at her new location.

yeah, i heard the owner of toyland turned into bergermeister meisterberger and took all the toys from toyland, turning it into sombertown. All hail Duke!

10:28-- I heard that it was going out of business, and also heard that it is under completely new ownership. If it is the latter, I wish the new owners well, but hope they'll change the concept and start fresh.

As a West Ender on H street, I have always enjoyed Toyland. I could care less who owns it, or what their tax situation is. Is the beer good? Yes. Is the service good? Yes. Is the decor good? Yes. Done and done.

Oh, and back to the point, I can't wait for Planes, Trains, and Automomobiles at Summer Screen.

done and done. exactly what toyland could be if they dont pay the tax man. tis easier to just do and apologize afterwards than it is to first ask permission. funny thing is, the tax man doesnt ask permission either.

I used to like Toyland before the new management. The service now is terrible. The staff is unfriendly and at times downright rude. I'm mean, pour me a drink and hand it to me with a smile. That's your job.

I heard that the business was sold and that some time in June it would close and reopen with a new concept.

Anyway this is another example of how capitalism works! Hopefully they'll get some new staff in there. Viva la free market economy!

Inked, I hope you take some of these down. Personal attacks are not nice. Cyber-bullies are LAME! Toyland is a nice place and David is a nice man.

inked said...

7:33,
I'm still mulling it over. I agree that David is a decent guy. He's done a lot for H Street. I also think his previous business partners are good people. As far as I'm concerned, it was a business dispute that certain people (not any of the three partners) took too an unpleasant level. Why people are still pushing that 6 month old issue is beyond me.

People are allowed to think that a place has bad service.

IRS Agent said...

9:34 - agreed. Nearby homeowners/business owners are also rightly allowed to be concerned when neighborhood business owners don't pay their taxes, or when staff at that neighborhood business curse at and kick to the curb patrons who ask tough questions about the business practices of the establishment in question. But apparently this blog is censored when tough ethical business practice questions are asked of certain business owners...

inked said...

irs agent,
do you choose to intentionally misrepresent the situation, or do you really not understand the definition of the verb to censor? Because one of the two issues is definitely popping up here.

IRS Agent said...

If removing posts with which you disagree or find unfavorable is not censorship, then please define censorship for me.

Six months ago the current owner threw out the partners and his friends posted to this blog that the reason for the dispute was the other partners' lack of business acumen. Now, it turns out that the owner with the alleged business knowledge didn't know he had to pay sales taxes for the past 6 months and as a result has to sell the business. I have zero sympathy for people who neglect to pay their taxes and have to face the consequences. If I have misunderstood the situation, please feel free to clarify; however, this is the story that's circulating.

I would imagine that if any other H Street business faced similar drama you'd cover it. Few of the race-bating comments, or criticisms of other H St businesses (such as Horace and Dickies or XII) seem to elicit the same reaction from you. If you want to delete inconvenient posts about friends of yours, that fine - it's your blog. But then don't deny that you're censoring your blog.

Removing post with which you disagree or that you find inconvenient, to my knowledge, is the very definition of censorship. If that’s not your definition, then please explain what it is.

I’m not sure what you mean by “misrepresenting.” Six months ago, two of the partners were kicked out, and the remaining partner’s friends took to this blog to criticize their lack of business acumen. Now, the remaining partner (the one with all the business knowledge) is selling the business because he wasn’t paying sales tax for the last six months. I have zero sympathy for people who don’t pay their taxes and must face the consequences. If I have “misrepresented” the situation, please feel free to clarify; however, this is the story that’s circulating.

You delete the comments that criticize your friends, but rarely touch the race-bating comments, or the criticisms of other H St business (such as Horace and Dickies or XII.) It is your blog—delete what ever you want. But don’t turn around and act like you’re not censoring.

You've deleted a previous comment from this poster on this thread. Perhaps this is the censorship to which they refer?

Word around the neighborhood is that the remaining original partner was forced to sell because he hasn't been paying his taxes since he kicked out the other partners. A remarkable oversight, it seems, made all that much more interesting to some of us, given that his friends had taken to this blog six months ago to criticize the two ousted partners for their lack of business acumen. I imagine this is what IRS agent was referencing. Of course, if this isn't the situation, feel free to clarify.

Drama aside, changes in businesses on H St are of interest to your readers, even if those businesses involve friends of yours.

2:58/irs agent,
what comment do you think I deleted? The only stuff I recall removing recently is Viagra/Cialis/ect. related spam. A couple of comments did get caught in my spam folder, but they should be back up here now. I said misrepresented bk I don't think I've pulled any relevant comments from this post.

I don't generally pull race/gay baiting post unless they use the N or F word. I do pull personal attacks and I've done it for several private citizens, ANC reps, as well as business owners and employees. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I also try to be respectful of the internal workings/drama of local businesses. At least to the extent that no criminal laws have been broken.

inked said...

P.S. the spam filter (which I did not configure) probably pulls comments with certain word patterns, and almost always pulls comments that are almost exact reproductions of recent comments (the spam filter thinks you are a spammer).

inked said...

I forgot, I did delete the original comment from irs man because it violated the prohibition on personal attacks. It used an individual's name, and provided no evidence for the claim it made. Call that censorship if you want, but I have no way of substantiating the various claims people make about individuals here. When that's the case, I remove the comment.

For instance,
if someone made a serious accusation that Tony T. of the Pug were running an illegal turtle fighting ring out of the Pug's bathroom (of his basement) it would get pulled.

Derek said...

I noticed a comment that I posted about the old H St Park that was converted to the now H St Connection was pulled, but I didn't make any complaints because this is a personal Blog and it is to the discretion of the person who 'owns' it.

Also, I really thought we were all done with the Toy-land drama.

[ps: I heard from a reliable source that SOVA would be shut down for not paying their lease, but wanted to wait to see if it was true. After a couple of years, I don't think it is true and they are doing great.]

I don't know what IRS agent is talking about. I don't have to care if someone isn't paying their taxes, thats why I pay my taxes so someone else can worry about it. Bad service is bad service. I would think the top priority for that bar would be finding competent bartenders who dont have a chip on their shoulder because they are just a bartender. Move quickly and bring me a drink or NO TIP FOR YOU!

inked,

Tony T is however running an illegal turtle fighting circuit in his basement bathroom.

Don't believe me?

Check out the turtle soup on The Pug's Friday lunch menu.

Ah, ok this makes a bit more sense. If the various unhinged commenters who can't seem to let the Toyland non-issue go tried to impose their nut-jobbery face-to-face, I'm not suprised they got 86'd.

Heh. I haven't been to Toyland in several months because it's at the far opposite end of H Street from me, but maybe I'll head over on principle.

inked said...

Derek,
I have heard from a few people whose comments have mysteriously disappeared. This may have been one of those.

Oboe, you're in for a treat. They really scraped the bottom of the service industry barrel to find those employees.

Oh, and I think they are closed on Mondays now.
