Tomorrow: H Street Bakes

Don't miss out on the inaugural H Street Bakes on the Argonaut (1433 H Street) patio tomorrow. Four local chefs unite for the debut of H Street Bakes, a pop-up bake sale offering tons of deliciousness. 10am-3pm.

Kim Moffatt, Executive Pastry Chef at Granville Moore’s, had a dream: to open a co-op bakery on H Street. But, with the current construction and steady rising lease rates, it was clear that the temporary pop-up model might be the most effective way to get started.

Moffatt is one of several attendees of Street Talk, a series of informal conversations about the future of H Street economic development moderated by entrepreneur Joe Englert and Julia Christian, Executive Director of CHAMPS – Capitol Hill’s Chamber of Commerce. Moffatt shared her co-op bakery concept at a recent Street Talk session and after lengthy discussions on local business incubation, partnerships were formed, plans were made, and H Street Bakes is now a reality.

Moffatt will be joined by 3 fellow chefs: Faith Sleeper, Amber Yankulov and Tiffany Coln, all of whom are local to the Capitol Hill/H Street NE area of DC.

“The beauty of the pop-up model is that it provides the opportunity to test out your product and business model and really get the kinks out,” says Julia Christian, CHAMPS Executive Director. “Starting a business is not an easy process. When you’re dealing with so many variables—neighboring development, demographics, buying power, spending patterns—it can be very difficult to predict what will work and what won’t. The advantage of the pop-up business model is that it serves as a low-risk beta test, allowing prospective business owners to see firsthand and address issues and concerns before taking the next step and investing significant resources in a permanent storefront space.”

Lame. From the title, I was expecting free samples of pot brownies. But hey, it's a great opportunity to quash those munchies! Bake and roll!

Hey... Could this lead to our very own H-street konditorei ?

Eine Palatschinken mit schlag, bitte.

It would have been great if they had some fresh bread as well. H Street seems to me to be a great place for a bakery where we can get fresh bread. I know I would buy more fresh bread than cupcakes and cookies.

I agree about the bread. However, the scones and quiches were excellent. Are they doing this every weekend?

Ditto on bread, any kind of whole grain muffins or rolls, etc ... it was all dessert. I'll continue to buy my fresh bread at the Saturday farmer's market.

you know, i hear it is difficult to find good bread in the District b/c it's the water here.

also, quiche fans - that's my friend Amber Yankulov who works at Granville Moores. i agree her quiche is out of this world!

I grabbed breakfast this saturday at Inspire BBQ at 7th and H. The man behind the counter said they bake all their bread in house and are going to start offering it for sale. I grabbed a breakfast sandwich and the in-house-made roll it was on was excellent. If the products they start offering are as good as that roll, I am excited about the rest. In fact, I ordered a cake for a party I am attending this weekend. I don't think they have their baking routine down to a science yet, but it should be a great place to stop on the way to the Farmer's market for bread/rolls.

I just don't buy the water argument. We The Pizza makes a very good NY slice of pizza with local water. Having grown up in NY and having made bagels at 4 AM when I was a kid I BELIEVE that someone can make good bagels and bread here. Hell, Brooklyn Bagels in Rosslyn makes the best bagel I've had since moving here 5 years ago. Worth driving out every weekend.

We the Pizza does not make anything resembling NY Pizza. Pete's New Haven is closer to NYC.
