As a follow up to the recent dog on dog attack by an unleashed and intact male pitbull I wanted to let people know that they can get their pit bulls neutered or spayed for FREE. Here's the info (thanks to the reader who sent it to me):

The Washington Humane Society in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society is offering vouchers for FREE Pit Bull Spay and Neuter at the Washington Humane Society's National Capital Area Spay and Neuter Center located at 1001 L Street, SE, Washington DC 20003.

Vouchers may be obtained in person Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 5 PM. We are located within walking distance of both the Navy Yard and Eastern Market Metro stations and the #90 and #92 bus.

They look so cute before they latch onto your neck.

Are these vouchers transferable? Can responsible neighborly readers of the blog pick up vouchers to hand out to pitbull owners on the street who probably don't read this blog?

Yeah and (please don't think i'm attempting to be mean-spirited) they should honestly put information about this program up in local barbershops and nail salons as they'd probably do much more good there than posting on a blog.

Get a booth at H St Fest.

Also a "don't chain your bikes to trees" booth

A "please eat your chicken bones" booth

The Best Friends Animal Society folks were very involved in one of the best animal-related stories of the last several years, what happened to the Michael Vick dogs? They do great things.

Best Friends Animal Society is still involved in working directly with pitbulls of DC. I agree with Anon (3:47pm)-- this should be posted around as a flyer in Trinidad/Hst communities.

I'm glad you posted this. I walked by a pit bull yesterday. He was on a leash and well behaved. I waived hello.

Thank you so much for posting this! I knew of the program, but I agree that Wash Humane should be doing more to reach out to the communities who need it the most (and are almost certainly unaware of its existence). I just perused their website in hopes of finding a flyer to print out, but no such luck.

That said, I love Wash Humane- they actually are a very decent city shelter. I adopted my beautiful Rottie girl from them 2 years ago :)

I think all dogs are the same, if they fell uncomfortable in the moment they will act on it. But "Pit Bulls" are no super dogs, all the Myths are not true. You compare them to a hyena who have one of the strongest bite fores. The "pit Bulls" that you hear about in the news are unstable dogs it is not healthy for a dog to act like that. I think who ever is responsible for these dog should not be aloud to own a dog of any kind ever, it not far to the dogs or to the people love these dogs how they truly are.
All dog need to be trained the same way and all dog should be fixed not just "pit bulls" for the safety of all dogs. Remember dogs are animal not people that need to be respected, like the wolf You need to be a good pack making shore your dog Knows his place in your family, even if he is a little dog.
