An Incident At Fruit Bat

-1

I have a preliminary report of a stabbing at Fruit Bat last night. I have no context, but the guy apparently bled on the steps of Granville's. I'm told that the victim was shaken, but is recovering.

UPDATES AFTER THE JUMP

Still not a lot of facts, but multiple stab wounds. Prince of Petworth is reporting that the stabbing occurred in the bathroom (I can't confirm that). The victim survived the attack, and is stable. I know that they were using a new promoter last night, but that's about all I've got right now. Fruit Bat is located at 1236 H Street. Photos provided by Tony T.

Fruit Bat IS OPEN while the investigation continues.
He's two two brief Twitter statements from Councilmember Tommy Wells:

Tommy Wells:
@AlanPageDC yep. Difference is how they responded to MPD. Sticky Rice same problem-shut down over New Years this year.

Fruit bat will not be closed re:last nites stabbing. They did everything right according to MPD. A lesson to all.

@HStreetDC reports that the attacker escaped.

We were in GM's from about 10-midnight, first floor, and didn't hear anything. I hope this isn't as bad as it sounds...

Unfortunately, you're correct. It happened a little after midnight last night. We walked out of The Pug to a group of people and emergency personnel on the sidewalk. The man was lying in front of Granville Moore's with several stab wounds. It was extremely sad and disturbing.

Two friends saw someone cleaning blood off of the steps of Granville's this morning, who said that they would probably be opening a little late today.

Fruit bat stays open while Sticky Rice was shut down for a less serious stabbing? Glad to see some consistency.

they key is how the business responded after. Here's some Twitter commentary from Tommy Wells:

My friends and I were there when this happened. We had just walked in to the bar. The victim told us that he was using the urinal and some guy walked up to him, jabbed him, and ran away. He said there was no altercation between them. The vic (yeah, I watch law and order) was very drunk and continued to drink afterwards. I only mention this last part to say that he possibly was telling the truth about there not being a confrontation.

While we were only at Fruit Bat for 20 minutes or so, I do believe that this incident had nothing to do with lack of security or a promoter attracting the wrong kind of crowd. It was a nice, jovial evening with some ass walking around sticking people.

@cookies: you can't honestly believe that the guy just got randomly stabbed. That sort of thing simply does not happen.

I mean, if there was "some ass walking around sticking people", where are the other people?

Off topic: Saturday morning while walking home from the H Street farmers market on the 600 or 700 block of I Street NE, my wife and I saw what looked to be a pitbull attacking another dog which was with a young couple. There were many people around trying to get the pitbull to release but, as my wife is pregnant, I did not feel it was safe for us to be around a dog fight and we quickly left the scene.

I am really hoping this situation was able to be resolved. Honestly, my wife and I can't get the scene out of our minds--it was horrific. I'm hoping someone on this board knows the people involved and may be able to provide an update. Also, just a reminder that there are many ridiculously irresponsible dog owners in this neighborhood and, honestly, if you see someone walking a pitbull, it's probably best to cross to the other side of the street.

Re: the off-topic post...that was my dog being attacked (and my wife and 9-month old baby) at 7th and I St. I was at home a few blocks away, completely unaware of the attack until my wife ran in the door with a bleeding dog screaming for me to call the vet. When our dog finally got loose from the vicious (unleashed!!!) pit bull, he ran like hell back to our apartment, dripping blood everywhere. When my wife headed back to the scene, the other dog and its horrifyingly irresponsible owner had fled.

After we talked with DC Animal Control, we headed to our vet, who sent us to a proper animal hospital since his wounds looked pretty serious. At the hospital we went to, a doctor looked at the dog immediately and was extremely concerned about how serious his wounds were. He had countless puncture wounds all over his neck, open gashes on his sides and chest, and an ulcer in his eye due to strangulation. Thankfully, after almost two hours in emergency surgery under general anesthesia, the vet expects him to recover. He is lucky to be alive, and this pit bull was certainly trying to kill him. He is back home now and resting, and we are trying to figure out who this dog is and where its owner lives...

If anyone witnessed the attack and can tell us anything about what you saw, please reply. Did you hear what the dog's name was? Did you see which way they went?

We were at a distance (we came up towards I street from H Street right as a neighbor was running at the dog with a broom and I heard someone shouting to "get a hammer". Your dog was wailing and everyone was screaming --it was hard to make out exactly what was going on but I saw a young, thin, light-skinned black girl lying on top of the pit bull trying to pull it off. I have no idea if she was the owner or someone trying to help. The pit was a light brown, solid color dog. I did not notice anyone else that seemed to be the owner of the pitbull but there were several young kids on the stoop at that nearby church (where you may want to go and see if anyone saw anything). There were many neighbors outside much closer than we were so someone in that area definitely saw something. Also, obviously, there was the man that ran over with the broom (30s/40s, white) who you may want to find who I think lives on that block. I will speak with my wife to see if she can remember any more but she was hysterical the whole time.

I am so thankful that your wife and child made it home safely and, while I'm deeply upset for what your dog had to go through, I'm relieved to hear that it is alive.

I hope you can find the owners of the pitbull as I would love to see these pieces of shit get what they deserve. I have seen pitbulls that fit that description in the area of I Street but, unfortunately, there are numerous people in our neighborhood with these dogs so it'd be hard to tell if it was the same dog.

The irresponsibility is just staggering. Some people in this neighborhood are just way too ignorant to own any animal, let alone a vicious one.

Please keep us posted on your search (and your dog's prognosis).

That is horrible...I am so sorry. First, did you call MPD and file a report? Not just animal control - it is essential that you notify MPD as well.

Also, can your wife provide any description of what dog and dog owner looked like? I live around the corner and pass through that area with my dog 2-3 times a day and would like to know. Also, how do we contact you if we see this wackjob again?

Hey- attacked dog owner, here. The woman who was lying on top of the pit trying to pull him off was the woman who was "walking" him. If you see any pits off leash (or any dogs for that matter...), I would call animal control right away. 202-576-6664

We did file a police report.
