Thrillist Previews Tru Orleans

I linked to the menu last week, but here's the actual preview. Look for an opening in short order.

It can all be summed up in one word, OVERPRICED!

The building looks great and that deck is amazing. I'll give it a shot based on that alone. While some of the food prices are head scratching ($23 for tilapia) hopefully they'll refine the menu a bit once they open and get some constructive feedback for customers.

acadiana is the bar for local louisiana cooking for me. need to know something about the chef, since the owners aren't from louisiana according to the thrillist article, before i even bother...

ps: why is thrillist acting like no one has seen the tru orleans menu when it debuted here? go get em, inked! LOL.

Seems odd that cole slaw appears to be the only vegetable offering on the entire menu. No cauligreens, salad option, etc? Hmmm.

Wylie,
they actually had the menu first. I linked to their version soon after they posted it.

I thought the owner, Tru (last name Orleans?), was from New Orleans. Not like it really matters because I dont think he was a stripper and he opened an authentic strip club. That guy is going places

The chef is Andre Miller according to previous sources (http://dc.eater.com/archives/2011/05/04/georgetown-residents-will-be-pleased.php)

Tru Redding is one of the owners from which the name derived from.

Tilapia is just gross, and I wish restaurants would stop serving it altogether. It tastes like dirt, likely comes from China, and is really not that good for you when farmed.(It made me so happy when Argonaut dropped it from their menu in favor of something more sustainable.)

But I'm still excited for Tru Orleans to open. Anyone know if they have plans to serve brunch? Beignets and coffee on that deck sounds really nice...

I'm not a fan of tilapia either although if it's farmed in the U.S. it's a good choice according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium ratings. They do thrive wild in some lakes in the south but must be netted, not caught on lines. Since they're invasive the policy is, please take as many as you can ... I have seen guys haul in cast nets full of fat tilapia, with a big gator waiting patiently for one to wriggle out of the net. A fat wild tilapia would probably be tasty, a farmed one from China is not worth eating.

Most tilapia eaten in the U.S. comes from either Latin America or Asia, according to this recent article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/02/science/earth/02tilapia.html?pagewanted=all

I would imagine if they were serving wild-caught/sustainable seafood, they'd want to note that on the menu, since it is sort of the trend among restaurants these days.

There's a New Orleans place near my office in Foggy Bottom, called Bayou. Their menu is much more in line for what would be appropriate. Greater breadth of offerings, lower prices across the board for most of the same items. http://www.bayouonpenn.com/www/food-menu.php

Granted, Tru Orleans has a more elaborate buildout, but still.

The prices look on par with Todd Gray's Watershed.

Watershed's menu looks awesome. I'm not likely to eat at Tru Orleans, but if the beer menu looks better, I'd grab a drink on the rooftop.

Prices might be on par with Watershed, but there is nary a tilapia dish to be found on that menu.

Dinner at Watershed last weekend was one of the best meals I've had in neighborhood in... well... ever.
