Photos of Shawafel

DSC_0006

Shawafel is the newest eatery to open on H Street. This Lebanese spot serves both lunch and dinner in a laid back (order at the counter) setting. The menu consists primarily of flatbread sandwiches. I opted for the meat shawarma (a mix of lamb and beef) and it was very good. Sandwiches are in the $6-7.50 range, or you can opt for a full platter for $13. There's a starter menu, so don't forget to pick up some tabbouleh when you stop by. A number of Middle Eastern canned and bottled beverages are also available. 1322 H Street. 11am-9pm Sunday-Wednesday, and 11am-3am Thurdsday-Saturday.

More photos after the jump.

Looks like these guys are doing it right. Keep it simple, reasonably priced and delicious. Can't wait to try it out.

This looks pretty awesome. The last time I had decent schwarma was at Al Pacino's in Baltimore and that was last century.

Early reviews seem positive. Good, cheap food that is there until 3 am? This place sounds like it has a good shot at success.

Welcome to the neighborhood guys - this place looks like a fine addition to the block.

Just had a meat shawarma. One of the better ones I've had in the states. After subsisting on horribly dry stuff at Quick Pita for four years, this is a nice change of pace. I had the drier end-of-the-meat-stack meat and it was still tender and tasty. I appreciate that the seem to make their own shawarma there, as you could tell there were actual chunks of meat in it, which is a sign of good quality. I particularly liked the tang of the tahini with the liberal use of mint, which gave it an extra dimension of flavor.

I had the french fry sandwich last night. It was pretty awesome!

Looking forward to trying this place out. If they have the balls to give their restaurant a name that rhymes with “awful”, they better be good. Otherwise the jokes will write themselves.

Apparently the chef has been trained under none other than Jose Andres

Still need to visit. Those rotating grill things are standard at Europe's best doner kabab joints. This please looks like the Real McCoy.

Went there for lunch AND dinner yesterday, it was that good. (Also...there was no food in my fridge). It was really delicious, and I highly recommend it. I think it's such a great addition to the H St repetoire. We shared the chicken and meat shawarma, and they were both juicy and delicious. I had the kafta for lunch - takes a few minutes but it's grilled to order.

So no "the food was sho'-awful" reviews?

Food was average IMHO. Got the shawarma sandwich. Dry meet and no yogurt sauce. Hoping it was just then end of the meet stick...will definitely try it again. I do love the concept, and very nice space with friendly staff. Buddy had kafta and thought it was really good.

It was good. Not awesome, not mindblowing, just good. The falafel sandwich was overpowered by basil, a bit dry, and super salty. The hummus is basic, the fattoush is quite good, and the fries are just basic fries. But it is what it is, reasonably priced fast food, with what seems to be very good customer service.

People trying to make this place into the end-all Lebanese food experience are joking, or have never been to the middle east.

And where DOES one go for awesome, mind-blowing Lebanese food in DC? Because the falafel at Spike Mendelson's South Carolina themed Middle East eatery "Bubba Ganoush" didn't knock my socks off.

Middle Eastern food is terrible.
