Atlas Vet Coming to 1326 H Street

Atlas

I can finally confirm those rumors I'd heard about a vet coming to the east end of the H Street Corridor. Atlas Vet will have four exam rooms and provide routine care, vaccinations, general surgery, dentistry, etc., but will not be a 24 hour hospital. Atlas Vet will have a booth outside 1326 H Street at tomorrow's festival. Stop by and say hi. You can also like them on facebook, and follow them on twitter. They hope to be open by the end of the year.

Sounds awesome, anybody know their qualifications? I, like probably most around here, use Union Vet, but they're a bit far away now that I'm in Trinidad. Would be nice to walk to the vet instead of drive!

pretty sure you can become a certified vet by taking a weekend class at petsmart

or at least you should be able to. really what are the options?

put pet down
give it antibiotics (or something that makes the owner think you are doing something) then wait for pet to die in year or two and nobody will if know if you helped anyway

Wow. Those posts aren't *the* most fucked up thing I've read in the last day; but they're close.

I think their twitter account is @atlasvetdc not @atlasvetmarket

sweet. Now I don't have to have my ketamine mailed in from india. I'll still have the girls brought in from India, though.

dt,
I know that the veterinarian has worked at Caring Hands Animal Hospital in Arlington for the past five years.

8:35,
Fixed it. Cut and paste error.

dave b,
Pretty sure it's 4 years of vet school and a state licensing exam.

After meeting one of the vets at the festival, I am going to try them out. I am really looking forward to having a clinic so close to home, especially one run by folks who live in the neighborhood and are invested in seeing it flourish.

Vets are a waste of money. If the pet is defective, put it down and buy a new one.

why the cynicism?
the continual chant is when will H street have more than just bars and restaurants... well, the addition of a vet clinic is a great example of what the neighborhood needs to be as vibrant during the business day as it is at night.

these highly qualified veterinarians introduced themselves and their practice to H street at the festival on saturday. their soon-to-be open practice is both welcome and necessary for the community.

I have been happy with Union Vet and will probably continue to use them, but I agree, mev. Even though I love the variety of bars and restaurants popping up on H, it's great to see a non-bar/restaurant open.

That IS really good news for H st. DJBays if you have a good feeling about them maybe we'll take our "Monsters" in for a check up too.

I will definitely swing by with the cats sometime. They hate getting in cabs, so this location is perfect.

I'm with inked on this one. I like Union Vet, but not having to drive the two dogs there is going to be nice...bravo Atlas Vet for opening.

All we need is a gas station and then we'll have everything!

I was pretty horrified when I mentioned I had a pit bull (who is sweet as can be), but said I don't take her to street festivals after what happened at Adams Morgan Day last year.

The vet didn't know what I was referring to so I explained that my friend's foster dog (who was part pit bull) got shot and killed by police (due to a scuffle with a smaller dog- who started it). The vet then said "Oh was it because he mauled someone." Yeah with that attitude I'm keeping my dogs FAR away from these people. I'll stick with Union Vet (they're great and all breed friendly!)

jr -- obviously you're more likely than I am to know what the guy was thinking, because you were there and I wasn't. But just from the words, I can think of two different possible subtexts for that statement:

1: he believes pit bulls are inherently dangerous, and therefore the pit must have been doing something awful (which seems to be the impression you got);

2: he believes that cops don't shoot dogs unless they have a very, very good reason, and therefore the pit must have been doing something awful because otherwise there wouldn't have been a good reason.

I love dogs about as much as anyone you'll find on here; but if I heard that a cop shot a dog and heard nothing else about what happened, my first reflex would be to think "I wonder what the dog did?" -- regardless of its breed. Maybe that's what was going on. Or maybe not -- obviously, I wasn't there.

Chris, (And all who have questions about Atlas Vet).
My name is Alex Grant. I have worked at the Pug on H St for more than 4 years. I also am the proud owner of a very well behaved Pit Bull named Otis. In fact, one of the reasons our Pit Bull is so well behaved is because we take him to Spot On Training located in the basement of Metro Mutts on H. One of the owners of Atlas Vet has been our vet at Caring Hands in Arlington for a while now. We could not be happier with the service that we have received for our pit bull (whom they have always welcomed and treated happily), and my girlfriend and I could not be happier that these services will now be coming to the neighborhood that we love. Best of luck to Atlas Vet, and to anyone who is wondering; Pit bulls are welcome there, and wonderful creatures as long as you raise them correctly. In closing, Dave B: you're a moron.

Alex -- thanks for your post; but I wasn't asking questions about the Atlas Vet folks. I was merely suggesting there might be another interpretation of jr's experience than "they don't like pit bulls." HTH.

Thanks to everyone who came out to see us at our booth during the H Street Festival.

Dr. Matthew Antkowiak has worked at SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center in Fairfax, VA since 1997 and Dr. Chris Miller has worked at Caring Hands Animal Hospital in Arlington, VA since 2006.

JR - Please know that both doctors have experience treating Pit Bulls and have no bias towards the breed. We apologize if there was any miscommunication during the festival.

We look forward to being an active participant in the community and seeing H St thrive in the future.

Thanks for the info Atlas Vet, and welcome to the neighborhood! Please, pay no mind to the trolls, and do let us know when you're up & running! I have a feeling you'll be quite busy.

I would be happy to see their rates be less than union vet... while the folks at union vet have always been great with our pets, I always feel like I just got absolutely gouged every time I walk out of there.
