CP: What's Up at Murry's?

IMG_0934
The City Paper does a little digging into what exactly is going on a Murry's. It's a question I've been getting a lot recently. I knew they had dug some test wells in July, and that the building (which extends all the way to H Street Self Storage) had sold for $3.4 million roughly a year ago, but that was it. No one I asked seemed to know exactly what was happening. We still don't have all the answers, but here's some more info from the City Paper:
-The parcel is under contract and should go to settlement in November.
-The current owner is one Jerry Schaeffer, who the City Paper calls a "taxicab magnate."
-Schaeffer apparently also owns the future Walmart site on Bladensburg Road.

I would be very happy to see Murray's and Good Danny's closed and gone. Very happy.

I hope that Murry's holds on until the Giant open. There's no place else within walking distance with even a basic produce section. That said, I'll be very happy to see it replaced by the Giant. Murry's is ok for the basics, but they don't have fancy stuff, like, say, arugula or skim milk.

see this review of murry's from yelp(murry's fine food, actually), its pretty spot-on. link and actual review below:

two stars because the atmosphere is fucking fantastic. i'm not sure if only half the lights are on, half the lights are broken, or the place is just dark, but shopping at Murry's is like shopping at some post-apocalyptic foodstore and mad max is at the back of line making a hissy-fit bc the cashier is taking so long to get a price check on bulk processed cheese but it doesn't seem like anyone is actually checking the price. (just shut up and wait like the rest of us, MM!) half the supermarket is frozen food (the only kind of food in the future) and the other half is poorly stocked and maintained supermarket standards. need some cheerios?...just pick that box up off the floor in the boxed food aisle. don't like cheerios?...tough, that's all there is at murry's (and in the future!) shelves are somewhat organized but you should do some digging to find undamaged products, or what you're looking for might just be hidden behind something else. also, there's a shopping cart shortage in the future and you won't be able to take your cart to the parking lot since large concrete pillars block your exit (along with panhandlers that litter the entrance/exit). also apparent about the future is that customers will be ruder while not really being in a rush (simultaneously!).

you would think a ghetto-mart like this might have a nice selection of cheap beer but you'll find a better selection at your local convenience store.

seriously, i can't believe anyone is making excuses for this atrocious supermarket.

Maybe I missed it on here, but anyone know much else on the new sushi joint going in at 644 H - right next to the self storage? They've been going to town in there for a few weeks - looks nice. The digital message board said something like Ahari Sushi and Sake Bar. New to me - maybe not quite as hip tardy as Sticky Rice?

That review of Murrys is classic. I still remember a few weeks after i moved to the neighborhood going in there, walking down the aisles and thinking WTF. What a hot mess that store is. I got out of there as fast I could and went home and took a shower.

Well, they do carry bulk half-smokes.

I'd love to see a Walmart go in that spot!

Walmart would be awesome. All those living in their vehicles would have a welcoming place for an extended stay.

Actually, what H street needs is additional office buildings and dense apartments to drive mid day traffic to resturants in the vicinity and spur more diverse retail.

Are there any plans for H St Self Storage? That place really looks like crap

the best plan I can think for H Street Self Storage is to light a f*&kin match. Bless!

I got involved in an attempt by H Street Storage to evict one of their (numerous) homeless clients, who they alleged was living in her storage space (an apparent common practice, her only sin being that apparently she attempted to make some demands on the management there to "improve conditions"). That whole place is, um, questionable.
