We Love DC loves the drinks at Tru Orleans (400 H Street), but not so much the food.

I actually had a great meal there at thei temporary stand at H Street Festival of all things. The fries were amazing ("kettle cooked" and hand cut), gumbo was good, and sausage downright awesome.

Was this a fluke or do I just have bad taste?

How are they doing for breakfast? I'd like to see them stay open for breakfast. It looks cheap and it's very hard to screw up breakfast. Not enough breakfast places around in general.

The fried shrimp is good too.

I agree when will they open for breakfast.

Waiting for them to open for breakfast - wasn't that a selling point they used when they sought community buy-in as a restaurant? That they'd actually be a restaurant, not a bar with escorts? It seems like it would be difficult for their Ruth's Chris chef to screw up breakfast. Breafkast on Sundays AND Saturdays - starting at 7am was their original plan.

Gumbo was quite good. Sausage & Chicken Po Boy sandwich was pretty much bread with a couple of slices of sausage and some chicken. Meh.

I just ate their for the first time. Perhaps I'm a drunk, but I thought the drinks were weak. I ate the red beans & rice with andouille (sp?) sausage. The food was pretty good, if not a couple bucks more than I wanted to pay.

This sounds a bit snobish, but the restaurant would be considered good in a suburban community where it is surrounded by chains. It's not so great in a neighborhood surrounded by a lot of good, creative food.

I agree the food is not anything to write home about. I am from New Orleans and was very disappointed. I hope they can get someone who knows how to cook southern food in the kitchen soon.

Food is crap, although you wouldn't know it if you hadn't spent any time down south. It's not even "innovative southern cuisine."

IMHO, they're just trying to screw folks on the western end of H, because basically, it's the only one of it's kind on that end of H street. It's a guaranteed market for a few years...until folks realize the sham. And lots a folks have already realized the joke. Locals, I mean. The suburbanites frequenting H will likely give it a go, ONCE. At that rate, I give them less than two years to fold and go on to what they know best. Crap Asian and strip clubs. Pls don't finance these idiots with your patronage. The west end deserves better than these entrepreneurial vultures! Close 'em out and let's get a business that cares about our neighborhood. As a side, go to your local library, and use Proquest.com to research these ding dongs. If you have a GED, you'll likely see that they could care less about the long term of our neighborhood. There's a reason it's not called TRUE Orleans. Gotta love these 'entrepreneurs' that think that they can profit off of DC like they did in the 80's. Seriously, they make me sick. AND, the management doesn't even live in the district. PATHETIC.

At least they put a lot of money into the building and ultimately that will benifit H St. long after they're gone.
