WP: Taylor Cheesesteaks? YES!

The Washington Post's Tim Carman reports that our buddies over at Taylor Gourmet are expanding their sandwich empire in a new way. Rather than just a new location (they're doing that too), they're adding a whole new kind of sandwich, the Philadelphia cheesteak. The new operation, Taylor Charles Steak & Ice, opens its doors this December at 1320 H Street. I have to say they kept this one pretty under wraps. I had heard that an established business person on H Street was opening a new concept, but I did not hear about this.

The guys behind Taylor Gourmet are tacking this new mission with their usual gusto, so expectations are high. Carman documents their research travels in the article (complete with photos). I'm personally thrilled that they have again chosen H Street as a launching pad and flagship. Eater points out that they will also be serving Italian water ice. This will be third place on H Street to serve water ice (Rita's and Philadelphia water Ice).

I'm not really feeling the "Taylor Charles Steak & Ice" name. But otherwise excited about the prospects of this. I eat at Taylor very frequently. So much of their menu at Taylor Gourmet hits a home run for me (numerous chicken cutlets, meatball sub, roast pork, ravioli, stuffed peppers). So I have a strong belief they'll produce some all-star cheesesteaks.

I doubt it will be anything like a real cheesesteak from Philly. Ambrosio roll? NO Cheese whiz? Doubt it... Anyone from Philly knows it's all about the bread. And it's pathetic that I'd rather drive to Wawa in college park then walk a block to Taylor......

Did you even read the article? At all? The entire piece is about their quest to make the perfect cheesesteak bread.

"Patten and Mazza understand the roll’s importance, which is why after having found suppliers for almost every other ingredient in their cheesesteak, they’re still futz­ing with the bread."

I have no clue if they'll succeed, but they are certainly trying.

Lol. Right off the bat I know you are not from Philly.

If you were from Philly you would know the correct way to spell Amoroso's, much less know the difference between Amorosos and Sarcones rolls.

BTW, also love how you've already given up on their cheesesteaks before you've EVEN TRIED ONE.

meh. i can think of at least four sandwiches at Taylor (and I've only tried four) that are better than the best cheese steak I have ever had (and that includes some from Philly).

i dont see how a cheesesteak can possibly compete with a pattison ave. unless it was like half the price.

on another note: does Taylor have some kind of exclusive agreement with their baker? do they let him sell the bread elsewhere?

I like Taylor a lot, but I definitely liked their old bread better.

This will be interesting. I've never found Taylor to be anything special- it strikes me as a shop that is all business and no soul (months upon months of market research can't replace talent and love in the kitchen)-- but I'm glad they're trying it on H. The storefront should be a nice addition to the street.
