Local News Round Up

First up is an interesting look at the process, and lessons, behind some of the changes on H Street over the past decade or so. This analysis comes from Richard Layman, via his blog Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space. Urban Turf runs down the many large scale residenNewstial development headed to the H Street Corridor, and dcMUD has a nice piece on the mixed-use infill development coming to 1113-1117 H Street. For those of you trying to place it, that will be a five story building in between Family Dollar and Me and My Supermarket.

In food news, The President Wears Prada checked out the much anticipated BaoHaus Pop-Up at Toki Underground (which TPWP loves). Sova Wine and Espresso now sells Crunkcakes (locally produced drunken cupcakes). Crunkcakes is reportedly working on a vegan pumpkin Crunkcake, so maybe look for that one soon.

The Huffington Post reports on a major counterfeit goods bust over at the DC Farmer's Market (in the Florida Market). The bust, which includes items like, purses, movies, perfume, watches, shoes, ect., yielded nearly $3 million in fake goods.

Up Trinidad way not everyone is thrilled about the grand opening of Hyacinth's Place on Bladensburg Road. The transitional home for women who were formerly homeless, or at risk of homelessness, has been controversial since its inception. A neighbor reacted to a Facebook post from Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. (Thomas delivered a speech at the grand opening) with a tweet reminding everyone that the non-profit behind Hyacinth's Place had its exempt status revoked by the IRS for failure to file required forms for three consecutive years. Awkward...

Trinidad's Art in the Alley, a chance for local artists (amateurs too) to show off their work in an informal outdoor setting, is coming up in early November.

Random notes:
Something's going on in the former Naby's Island space (northwest corner of 12th and H). It was rumored at one point to become an Indian restaurant, but I had heard that fell through. I noticed the other day that they were building what appeared to be a bar (but could have simply been a side counter).

The building (formerly home to Miracles) immediately west of Little Miss Whiskey's is getting a pretty serious overhaul. I'm not sure what's eventually going in there.

I am thrilled that a non-profit that's trying to help out old ladies who don't have a place to live is trying to operate in our community.

I'd rather see non profits that mess up on filling paper work succeed in the neighborhood than bars and restaurants that do the same.

anon 3:57, i can't tell you how happy i am that you are thrilled! this is great news for all of us! can we take your example as a lead, and perhaps start a movement to ban anything that doesn't cater to the less fortunate? i, for one, am truly unhappy with the "progress" of our neighborhood. BUT, there's still a chance for us to turn this around, and create more homeless shelters in NE (specifically near so many amenities for which they are uniquely qualified...albeit, to exclude cheap and easy transportation to potential job opportunities). would you like to join our group in opening up parts of our homes to help these poor, poor women? i thought so! thanks so much! we'll be sending a few potential tenants your way. thanks for your support! it's people like you that keep hope alive for them, and for all of us. GOD bless you dearly. you've just earned thirteen points toward those pearly gates in the clouds!

7:02,
It's supposed to be a pizza place, but I haven't seen much action there recently.

This not filling out the paper work is an example of how these people became homeless in the first place. It's just another example of people not taking any responsibility for themselves. Yes, you do have to take care of your obligations....
