Pho Bar & Grill Opens Tonight

Pho bar and grill (4)

It's official, Pho Bar and Grill opens tonight at 5pm at 1360 H Street. I don't believe they have their liquor license yet (I'm not sure). If not now, then soon. They do have bubble tea, and Vietnamese coffee. The space is two levels (expect a roof deck in the future), and they serve salads, banh mi, and pho.

So was it actually open? Did anyone go?

My wife and I went. The staff was great. I ordered the Meatball Pho. The broth was tasty but the meatballs were hard and had some gelatinous mixture in them. We got our order to go and got home to realize that her Bahn Mi sandwich didn't make it into the bag. Nevertheless, we plan to give them a shot again since it was their first day and all. Other than that, the place looks nice and the upstairs bar, when open, will be great.

My husband and I went on opening day. They have some kinks to work out, of course (it's their first week), but the food seems promising. The pho broth could use a bit more of the aromatics (star anise, clove, etc.), but it was tasty and well-portioned. We liked that it came with Vietnamese herbs we'd never seen before (sawtooth herb/culantro). The bun is kind of hidden on the menu---described as "meat-wrapped lettuce", which is just confusing. The presentation of my Bun Thit Nuong was a little odd: on an oval dish, a small mound of rice noodles on one side, two leaves of romaine on the other, and a mound of (delicious) grilled pork in the middle, with a few Tbsp. of peanuts on the side. It wasn't at all self-evident how to eat this---you have to break up the lettuce with your hands, pour the dressing (and hot sauce) over, and stir, stir, stir (which is hard in such a shallow dish). I prefer the presentation and larger portion size at Pho14, but the meat at Pho Bar and Grill is smoky and flavorful--excellent!
