Ross Opens at Hechinger Mall

Ross is now open and operating at Hechinger Mall. I haven't been in yet, but I've heard it's a pretty nice store. Ross sells inexpensive home decor, kitchen items, linens, and discounted clothing (including designer and brand name labels). It's similar to Marshalls. DCist reported earlier this week that the new store has agreed to hire more than 60 District residents.

great news, looking forward to checking it out. the retail, etc. potential at Hechinger mall is big.

I went on Saturday, the line was incredibly long but moved quickly. I managed to find some great bargains for work attire...definitely an asset for the otherwise "tired" side of the mall.

Yes, great news about Ross. Aldi (discount supermarket chain from Germany) also looks like it will open soon, at 17th & Maryland Ave. This could be good news for the area. It also will encourage Safeway to up its game. I know that some readers here will turn their noses up at Ross and Aldi and wish instead for Macy's and Whole Foods. They're the readers who won't ride city buses and who want all of NE to look like Capitol Hill. But, there are others who will realize that Aldis and Ross will provide affordable food and clothing to the majority of families in the area.

yup! went on Sat., must have been close to thirty people on line, accessible (price-wise) for all folks in neighborhood, a welcome addition!

I think I just heard about 8 gunshots somewhere near K Street and 4th NE. Now police and fire sirens. Anyone know what's going on?

It sounded like 5 to me? And it definitely sounded like it was NW of there, have not seen anything reported yet...

I live on K St NE b/w 4th and 5th. I didn't hear anything last night.

According to the Rite Aid manager, they will be closing in January and moving two blocks east. Although it's only one block away, it seems that to the current Fashion One location is a reasonable possibility.

Except that's one block west, not two blocks east...

I'm thinking he's gotta be talking about either the thrift store or Family Dollar spaces on the 1100 block.

And why is Rite Aid moving?!

Derek said...

I can only guess that the Rite Aid is moving because their lease is up and no point in signing a 10-15 year lease when the building / site will be redeveloped. I am surprised that the Rent-a-Center is still there.

West, east, what's the difference?

I mean, ooops. Yes, he said (well, pointed) west, towards Union Station, so it would be the 600 or 700 block.

But the pizza place and 7-11 recently opened. I can't imagine them having signed a lease only for a few months.

The 7-11 has an agreement to be included in the new development. However, when the new development will happen I am not too sure. The economy has gotten a lot of projects to be put on hold or changed. I have not spoken to the Rite-Aid so I do not know the reasons.

Plus, there are several new stores that have opened up in the H Street Connection other than the 7-11 and Marvelous Pizza.

off topic, but did anyone notice that sulivan's seafood closed for good?

Sullivan seafood was a scam. They claimed to have no fillers in their crab cakes but I noticed large chunks of shrimp. Glad they are closed.
