Until this kind of shit stops, this area is not going to draw a major influx of new residents. Maybe thats the intention.....

Anon 12:48, how can you look around and think there hasn't already been a major influx of new residents?

Damn. Who's out at 4:50 in the morning to shoot or get shot anyway? At that point, you're either working the night shift or out causing trouble.

that is actually one of my friends. If he was out that late it was for a good reason. he is a great person, and it is wrong of anyone to say he had no business being out. how would you feel if that was one of your loved ones. who's to say he wasnt out working or anything. get your facts straight before you go running your mouth about someone who was shot, and we still dont know if he is going to be ok!

Anon 2:25pm. Your friend is lucky to be alive. I live near that street and we heard 6 gun shots. It was pretty loud and scary. I wish him all the best. Beyond your friend's incident, I will say that the number of gun shots/incidents are increasing. There is a fine line we are walking in our neighborhood and we need to make sure that our neighborhood is safe.

2:25 - hope your friend is ok and has a full recovery.

Not to be insensitive, but there is a ton less violence here than say Petworth or Columbia Heights. And violence in the city overall is down dramatically, the lowest its been in 40 plus years.

Landlord you may want to check your facts. Robberies without a gun is up 27% within 1000 feet of 1100 H street. Assaults are up 24%.

Fair enough. I was, of course, speaking about city wide homicides, which I think are of the utmost importance.

Looking at the crime map, 1500 sq ft from 1100 h st ne, yes robberies excluding guns are up 27%, but robberies with guns are down 28%, which seems good to me. Total violent crime is up 2%, total crime is down 5%, homicides are down from 1 to 0. Especially given the population increases and increased density of visitors to the neighborhood, the trends look good to me.

Love to live in your world landlord, where 97 violent crimes in year is nothing to worry about. By the way, keep in mind jthat some of that "reduction" in crime is done by manipulation, why isn't thief of a bike from a locked shed in my back yard classified as a burglary rather than a vague "theft"?

Anonymous said...

@2:52
Cops didn't just start manipulating crime stats this year you know so you can't really say.

Anonymous said...

Because it is not a burglary. No body lives in or works inside a locked shed. Therefore it is a theft. Look up DC code for Burglary before you start saying someone stealing a bike from a shed is a burglary.

I just bought a townhouse about a block from here. Scary? Yes. But I've heard a couple instances of gunfire living in Mount Vernon Triangle over the last couple of months too.

Less arguing and more details please.

Over the last 7 years most of the crimes locally that involve someone getting shot by somebody else has been the result of either some kind of family/lovers quarrel, or some kind of drug, gang activity type thing (and unfortunately the stray bullet has gotten a few as well).

I haven't seen anything recently about random shootings where locals are out walking there dogs or coming back from church and are gunned down by someone.

I hope 2:25 pm's friend is ok and will make a full recovery...and I really hope that they weren't gunned down at random for "fun" by some really bad people.

I guess the Argonaut employee shooting was random. That sucked.

The ho hum attitude from the police about the shootings from the police is really not helpful. Sending a twitter notice about the shooting an hour after it happens shows the complete lack of understanding how the public can help the police catch the culprits. Yes this event happened at 5 am, but the last time it was 9 am and people were out on H Street. The crooks are getting bolder and bolder and the police don't seem to have a real plan to address it.

we need a social marketing campaign: "Nothing good ever happens after 3am. Be home by 3am!"

Anonymous said...

Actually Tom a lot of people are working by 5 AM, even METRO noticed and is open on weekdays by then.

@Tom
uhh... shift workers, some people in my office are on their lunch break at 3am. The entire US government doesn't shut down at 5pm like a lot of people assume. It's a 24/7 operation.

Why are there no further details? I can't find anything more on the web about this and it happened in view of my home - I called 911 upon hearing the shots and later saw the victim get taken away in the ambulance. There were 5 more shots fired in the neighborhood on Sunday night and we alerted police to that, too. None of the police I spoke with later that week could give me any reassurance or any further information. I read somewhere that the shooting was so serious that they sent a homicide team to investigate - did the man even survive? Prayers for him and his family, and for everyone's safety in the area.
