District Cuisine Reviews Pho Bar & Grill

Local blog District Cuisine hits up the newly opened Pho Bar and Grill (1360 H Street). They give it a positive review overall, but point to a few service issues, and note that the restaurant does not yet have its liquor license. I was in recently, and the manager told me that they would have the license very soon. I would agree with the preference for round eye steak pho. They did not have banh mi when I visited, but were working on introducing them.

I went for lunch a few weeks ago with Mrs Oboe, and while the service wasn't Michelin quality, they were enthusiastic and welcoming. And the Pho was yummy. Can't wait for them to introduce banh mi.

ditch the full service, lower your prices and get rid of the meatballs

I agree on not really needing a full-service type offering. When I went a few weeks ago with friends, the waitress seemed mostly useless (no offense to her). I could have easily placed my order at the register and picked it up myself (Taylor Deli style). Not feeling the need to tip 20% would make me likely to come back more often.

That being said, my veggie pho was DELICIOUS and while some folks might find $9 high for pho, it sure beats the $14/bowl price for the place between 6th and 7th on H Street NW. That place is a joke.

I have been several times and really like the place. It is one of the cheaper food options on H st and the food is great. The limited issues I've had were growing pains for a new business but overall, they are great.

The spring rolls are great. They just have to bring back the grilled beef they had the first few weeks!

Has their broth improved since opening? My girlfriend went on the second day they were open, and found the broth to be very bland -- I thought it was one of the weakest pho broths I've ever tasted, and I've tasted dozens. Very little beef flavor, no anise flavor, no ginger flavor -- the holy trinity of pho broth. And their serving their pho with Italian genoa basil rather than Asian/Thai basil was really really weird.

Meatballs? I don't know a pho joint in this region that doesn't offer meatballs as an option. That being said, most of the Vietnamese I know refuse to eat them...and these are people that happily eat tripe!

I thought the pho was decent, but not memorable. The service was friendly and prompt, but unnecessary as other noted. I agree the broth could use some more 'oomph' and the prices seem a bit high--particularly since they're comparable with toki (the prices, not the flavor).

Glad to have it but is a pale comparison to the other Pho places in the suburbs. I agree about the flavorless broth and lack of Thai basil. The flavors definitely needs kicked up a notch or two and seeing someone of Viet descent in the kitchen would be welcome.
