How Was Your Halloween?

I wasn't home to greet trick or treaters as I attended Scena's Poe double header at H Street Playhouse on Halloween, but I was curious about the experiences of others. A friend who lives on Morse Street (1200 block) told me that he had 85(!) trick or treaters this year. Did others experience a boom in trick or treaters? I'd be interested to see the overall trends (i.e. did most people have more/fewer visitors than in years past, and where were the biggest changes). Also, if you had smashed pumpkins, or other problems, where did they occur?

There was that lovely shooting on Florida and Staples, two blocks down from me.

Good group of kids, good costumes. No issues.

We're at 10th & H. Overall, a pretty good turnout, but actually less kids than last year, which was a surprise. No problems, no headaches.

Gales Street in Rosedale was a full-on flurry of kid and parent activity from 7-7:45. I was out of candy just about at the end of the rush. Good times. Blue horseshoe loves Rosedale.

Holbrook St b/t Morse and Neal - we had a pretty steady stream of kids (and teens) from about 6:30 to 8:30. Might have had some after 8:30 but we ran out of candy and had to shut off the porch lights! Will have to buy more bags next year.

Most kids were in costume, some were just adorable. Running maybe 50/50 on 'thank you's but I wasn't really keeping track. Lots of parents out with their kids which was nice to see.

We had about 100 before we ran out of candy and had to shut off our lights. Seemed like slightly more than two years ago(we missed last year) although that's tough to say since we ran out of candy that year as well. Most in costume, no issues.

1200 block of E, we had hundreds of kids. I only had ~120 pieces of candy available and ran out really early; others on my block who did a better job of stocking up went through over 400 pieces.

Cool things:

1. A lot of really fun costumes this year.
2. Everyone seemed in a great mood, even for Halloween.

Not-so-cool things:

1. Non-costumed adults without kids trick-or-treating. Dozens of them. It happens every year, of course; but I'm still stunned by it every time. I've never seen this anywhere but DC.
2. Trick-or-treat tourists. At different times over the course of the night, maybe a dozen minivans from god knows where came into the block, stopped in the middle of the block with their flashers on, discharged ~ten kids who then hit all the houses on the block before piling back into the minivan, which then drove off.
3. Trick-or-treaters, or their parents, took more than candy from one of my neighbors. They also took her wallet/pocketbook.

Holbrook between Neal and Oates. No real issues, most of the kids were in costume, a few parents were trick or treating for themselves, but nothing too out of the ordinary. Turned off the lights at 9 as the kids were getting older...

i live at 13th and e but we trick-or-treated on east capitol street. huge, fun festive atmosphere EXCEPT for the blatant alcohol drinking by many parents. if you walked through a large crowd you couldn't miss the stench. i saw people with their bottles shoved in both back pockets or in the beverage holder of the stroller. and many just walking around with red cups. people drinking on their front steps or in their yard while greeting kids...not a problem. but, if you need a to throw back a few to handle the night, perhaps its time to make alternative plans on halloween or pass your kid to someone else. the houses are decorated beautifully, but maybe i'll stay closer to home next year.

Trinidad-

Mostly cute polite kids-a few older ones - trick or treaters from 6:30 to 9ish -learned from previous years to have lots of candy plus hand out small quantities- had some leftover this year.

Good Times

There was also a shooting at the NY Ave. Metro that night. M St. exit blocked by lots of cops with automatic rifles.

DC um will eventually lead to my wife having a complete mental breakdown. Especially when H st or our 'hood is called ghetto. Course my neighbors and i have been trying to work out a system where the parents get a little drink at each house while the kids get their treats. I love drink or treating.
