MPD Apprehends Mugging Suspect on H

Earlier this morning Prince of Petworth relayed a reader report of a shooting in the 1200 block of H Street. This report was, thankfully, false. What did happen is that MPD apprehended a mugging suspect and recovered a gun. No shots were fired, and no one was injured. DCist covers the story. The earlier portions of this story appear below the official response from MPD (after the jump).

Good Morning,

There were two robberies this morning in the First District:

The first took place at 8:55 A.M. in the 300 block of 13th Street, N.E.

In this case, there were a total of three black male suspects, two on foot wearing masks and a third operating a red Ford four door vehicle. The suspects made good their escape in the vehicle and were last seen traveling eastbound in the 1300 block of Constitution Avenue, N.E. The victim had personal property stolen and suffered minor injuries. No weapon was used in this offense.

The second took place 9:38 A.M. in the 1200 block of H Street, N.E.

In this case, members of D.C. Protective Services Police and the First District were able to successfully apprehend the suspect. The victim in this case was not injured and their personal property was recovered. The suspect displayed a gun during the robbery, which was also recovered at the scene. The officers and detectives on the scene did an outstanding job in apprehending this suspect.

At this time, it is unknown if these incidents are related.

Prince of Petworth is reporting an UNCONFIRMED (reader source) shooting in front of 1238 H Street. According to the reader there were roughly a dozen police cars, crime scene, and clean-up on the scene just before 10:30am. No word on the status of the victim, and no other sources currently reporting any incident at this location.

UPDATE 11:17am

Prince of Petworth has a photo of police tape and a couple of police cars outside of 1238 (Granville's) this morning.

I will update as more information becomes available.

It seems like there have been several violent incidents on that block in particular - at what was Martini Lounge, and the same location with the new Fruitbat, Sticky Rice, and now Granville's. I've been a part of the H Street community since 2008, so I know better than to misconstrue this area as inherently unsafe, but I'm curious to know the rates of public violence on H Street as compared to other popular areas for young people - U Street, Dupont, Georgetown, etc.

In my opinion you are comparing apples to oranges. Those popular areas you mentioned have unique features that dilute/offset much of the potential for violence. Or lack many of the features that contribute to the violence.

U Street is probably the most reasonable candidate to support your supposition, but even then has two major thoroughfares and a shared border with Dupont/Logan Circles. MPD has also done a better job and keeping more of the violence in Columbia Heights from trickling south...

These crimes are getting a bit too frequent, and that worries me as someone who lives very nearby. Added police presence is a good start, but I guess this requires us to really be overly cautious even in the areas and times that we'd otherwise feel very safe. It's sad that people have to act in this way.

Inked, if PoP is correct, you might want to update your post title. PoP seems to be saying that there was a robbery with gun, but not an actual shooting. From the MPD update: "The victim in this case was not injured and their personal property was recovered."

This came over the MPD-1D listserv about an hour ago:

Annoyingmous,
I had already updated on Twitter (PoP wasn't the first to figure out that there was no shooting). Couldn't get away from rush at work. It's updated now.

Were shots fired or not? The MPD-1 message does not really answer the question. It merely states that the robbery victim was not injured.

2:25,
someone in the immediate area at the time says no shots fired.

Note to self: don't believe a damn thing PoP says... especially if it's about our neighborhood, which he seems to enjoy bashing.

Prince of pet worth is awesome. Blogging is a full time job for him. To say he bashes our neighborhood just goes to show what an oblivious arse you are. Oh, and a chicken shite. Pick a handle/name, or go back to your xbox. F.R.E.A.K.

violent crime tends to ebb and flow in our neighborhood. When the police lose visibility then the robbers come out of the woodwork. It is not helpful that MPD-1 appears to be retreating, and the defensive verbal judo from the new Lieutenant is not helping either. The lack of police issued information about crimes in the neighborhood is dreadful. POP may a drama queen but we probably would not have gotten information about the robbery on H Street without him.

New lieutenant? Mark Saunders has been a 1D lieutenant (specifically, the PSA-103 lieutenant) for years.

Wasn't referring to Lt. Saunders.

Solution = second amendment...

Supposedly they've pulled a lot of cops out of the neighborhoods to help with coverage of the Occupy protests, especially in the late afternoon and early evening hours when they've been disrupting traffic.
The city doesn't want to run up huge overtime costs so we lose. The Post reports that even using the regular duty cops has cost the city more than $1 million so far.

So much for the 99% - getting mugged and stuck with the bill. What's new?

Anon 12:14 -- do you have a source/link for your comment about them pulling cops out of neighborhoods to cover the Occupy encampment? I hadn't heard that from the patrol cops I know, so I'm curious where you heard that from.
