Shooting in the 1300 Block of H Street

From MPD:

This morning at approximately 2:52am, officers in the 1300 block of H Street NE heard gunshots at the mouth of the alley on the north side of the street. The officers observed an adult male subject falling to the ground, and he was found to be suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

This matter is currently the subject of an active investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Metropolitan Police Department, and therefore no further information is available for release at this time.

Persons with knowledge of this matter, or any unsolved crime, are encouraged to contact the police on a special toll-free Crime Solvers Confidential Telephone Hotline: 1-800-673-2777. Callers need not identify themselves. Information that leads to an arrest and indictment in a case may result in a reward of up to $1,000. (The Crime Solvers confidential telephone is located within the MPDC and is staffed 24 hours a day by Police Department personnel.)

Hope everyone is ok. I was wondering why there was a helicopter right outside my bedroom at 3 am.

Wait, officers were close enough to hear the shots and see the guy fall, but didn't catch the shooter? WTF!

I was across the street, and after the gunshots I saw a police officer run sprint from the alley to his squad car (probably to call for backup).

It was freaky that he didn't stay to help the victim and keep all the bystanders safe, but I guess it's the right procedure to get more police and EMTs onto the scene right away. Instead of calling for backup and/or helping people at the scene, I'm pretty sure that it was a good decision for the lone police officer not to just run after the gunman and risk even more lives. There were several witnesses close by in the alley itself, so hopefully some will recognize the shooter and help the police catch him/her.

There was a huge bloodstain this morning in the alley where it happened. Cops were still hanging out there. There were some daylight muggings today at 13th and I and on Orren Street too. Hopefully this gets the cops to step up their presence again.

I wonder why the officer didn't have his radio on him. It is odd that he would patrol without it.

I'm sorry but screw the officer it's his job to chase the bad guys and risk his life. That's why he's armed with a weapon of his own and body armor. Running away was cowardly. A murderer is on the loose because this man failed to do his job.

I was across the street, as well. I think the police response was perfectly within reason. Anon 11:15, you're out of line.

Agreed completely Anon 11:33. From reading the post (which says 'officers') I assumed there were more than one officer present. With only one officer, getting medical and police assistance to the scene ASAP is the most important thing and radio is the officer's greatest weapon. Chase down the perps once backup is on the way.

Any information in regards to see if this was a targeted shooting or if this was a random act of violence? Hopefully the person injured will be ok. Police should increase their presence on H street. It seems there is something going on everyday.

agreed. if the city wants this area to become one of the next great neighborhoods of dc, we can't have people feel like they are going to get shot over here. i know the city is a dangerous place, but a larger police presence would be welcome, especially at night.

I walked by the 7-11 last night around 1 am. There were no less than 10 squad cars parked outside and 20 offices standing around smoking cigarettes.

Not sure what is expected in terms of increasing the police presence. An MPD officer was practically on scene and the perp(s) still got away. And you know what, even if the radio was on his belt instead of a few seconds away in his car, they might have still gotten away. There were shots fired on my block on Halloween and MPD detectives were on the other end of the block investigating another crime, and the perps still slipped away. Unfortunately it's going to happen.

On the other hand, there are many times when MPD does catch the bad guys. Over Thanksgiving, they nabbed a guy on practically that same block of H St who had just committed a robbery. Turns out he is likely linked to bunch of armed robberies in this neighborhood, and now he's off the street. Last weekend, officers heard shots fired at 7th and H - they were on scene in about 20 seconds and apprehended a couple of dudes who ran into a house at 6th and K and recovered tens of thousands of dollars of crack. Not bad.

I'm not saying there's no room for improvement - of course there is. But you can't just holler all the time for more police. And if you're going to holler - holler at the mayor's office who lowers the number of police officers on the force, not at MPD.

At least, until Phil "soft on crime" Mendelson's policies and a horribly underfunded US Attorney's office both combine to make sure he's back out on the street in a month or two.

Unfortunately, I couldn't agree more. It's a freeking shame to see MPD locking these guys up, and then case after case being no papered by the AUSA, and have members of city council continue to make it easier for criminals.

Another underinformed but outspoken retard has surfaced!

Have you ever spoke with anyone from USAO? If so, you would have better command of the panoply of factors contributing to the impotence of this city's criminal defense system.

Problems bigger than the USAO: judges with lifetime appointments, release on recognizance, overwhelmed central booking (typically at capacity by midnight on Saturdays, if not earlier), and overcrowded jails.

Most definitely. And why? Because if MPD is looking out for a black male with dark jeans and a black shirt, that describes 50% of black males in Near Northeast!

Moreover, this neighborhood has lots and lots of alleys with lots and lots of empty, underlit yards with rickety garages. And plenty of poorly lit streets.

I don't know of any officer that doesn't carry a radio. I'm not even sure if they allowed to not carry a radio.

If anything, he was probably getting into his cruiser to chase the suspect. Which is not a bad idea, as the suspect likely left in a car.

I don't think we need more beat cops as one right on the scene wasn't able to prevent this crime. We really need more investigators to follow this stuff up and catch the perpetrator before he's able to do this again.

Also, I'm curious to know does anyone know if the victim was a citizen or a gangster? That isn't some kind of code for black or white either, I want to know whether he was a normal person who had a job or was just some drug dealer.

Actually, I have. With two different members of the US Attorney's Office, in some detail. And to local police officials (at the District Commander level up to the Chief) as well. You're right that there's a number of factors involved; you're dead wrong if you think neglect by the Federal Government isn't part of it. But feel free to go off the deep end again.

One down, more to go. They're taking care of themselves.

This is great news. Welcome!

Side note, I looked at the food truck website. The moving truck at the top of the website is very distracting. Maybe the owner will read this and change it. (That is meant as constructive feedback.)

I was mugged on Orren St between Morse and Neal on Saturday at 3pm. I had just parked my car when 2 younger african american males walked up to me and my girlfriend pulled a gun and demanded our money. Police were there in about 45-60 seconds after the crime (maybe someone on the street saw it go down). The bastarsds got away but the DCMPD were very great. I love that neighborhood, still cant believe it happened...

Anon 12:14 - Sorry that happened. Did the cops say if it might have been the same kids that mugged someone at 13th and I NE around the same time?

Anonymous said...

Any more information on this or the robberies at 13th & I? I live within a block and would love to have a better idea why the shooting happened and who the suspects/victims are. Thanks.

@Anon 12:15 If it was on Saturday at 3pm, you can offer WAY more detail than that, it was broad daylight! What were they wearing? What kind of hair (long dreads? short cut?)? What was their height? What direction did they head in after they mugged you? The more info you put on here, the more likely someone might be able to help ID them (or run the other way when they see them coming!).

@Anon 11:15 raises an interesting question, it seems the officer should have given chase *while* calling for backup on his radio.

I saw an alert for the 13th and I mugging Saturday and the cops were still hanging out there when I got home, but not sure the circumstances. Most likely unrelated to the shooting.

There was a mugging this morning on Montello near where I catch the D4.

Details for Orren St Mugging at 2:46pm 12/17/11...
There were two individuals, both african american dark complexions and looked to be 17-22 years old. First suspect with the gun (light black/grey color semi automatic handgun), was about 5'5" - 5'7" medium build, short cropped dreads/twists. Black jacket, dk blue sweater, black jeans, short top brown shoes ( the color of normal Timberlands). Second individual 5'7" - 5'9" medium build, black windbreaker pulled over face and head so you could not see features, black shoes, black jeans. Robbery occurred at corner of Orren + Neal. Suspects fled up Orren and made a left onto Oates Street and disappeared.

Can someone please tell me how one signs up to receive alerts. I live in the neighborhood on West Virginia Ave. and am deeply troubled by this new wave of incidents.

8:10 this morning? I'm pretty sure there is a crossing guard standing at that intersection by then, along with tons of kids walking to school.

"Panopoly of factors" == "no one's responsibility".

A bit like the DCPS situation: "It's the administration, but not really it's the curriculum, but then again it's teacher quality, but then again the parents suck. Aw, let's call the whole thing off."

Call it the "Gray Era Zero-Accountability Hand-Dance"...

Man, I used to love Evil Dannys. Those were some good wings. Couldn't understand a word the lady was saying, but the wings were good. But Wings & More Wings is just as good, if not better. And the mambo sauce is solid.

Wings and More Wings has always scared me -- it looks so beat up that I've been afraid I'd be getting rat poo and more rat poo. But I do love the name. If it's indeed that good, then I should give it a try.
