WP: Cmte. of 100 Issues Streetcar Report

The Post's Dr. Gridlock reports.

WCP: A Few More H Street Stats

DSC_0145

The Washington City Paper offers up a few more noteworthy statistics on H Street Commercial properties.

Urban Turf: A Spruced Up Option on H

Urban Turf looks at the space that formerly housed Sweets and Treats (an ice cream parlor). 1360 (next to the former Micky's space) recently got a nice paint job, and some other updates. That, combined with the work Evolve has undertaken, and news of a falafel shop coming to 1322a, makes me excited about upcoming opportunities on the neglected north side of the 1300 block.

TBD: No Charges in 2009 Joyner Shooting

TBD reports that no charges will be fired again Park Police officers in the 2009 shooting of Trey Joyner. Joyner shooting sparked high tensions and conspiracy theories. Some believed that Joyner had been shot in the back while unarmed. The Justice Department investigation, conducted by the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania after DC recused itself, has cleared all officers, and determined that Joyner aimed a loaded firearm towards an officer immediately prior to the shooting. Joyner was shot and died in an alley off Holbrook Street. Joyner was expected to be indicted only days after he was shot on charges related to a 2008 triple murder that also occurred on Holbrook Street.

CP: H Street Waiting Game

The City Paper briefly examines growing pains on H Street, identifying two primary factors:

1. Streetscape/streetcar construction that will pay off in the end, but causes headaches and economic hardship in the mean time;
2. The previously mentioned gap in desired sqft rates between landlords and business tenants.

CP: Falling to Earth on H Street

IMG_1037.JPG

The Washington City Paper touches on the disconnect between rents landlords want to get on H Street, and those businesses will pay.

Dining in DC Recommends Sidamo

IMG_4235

Besides the coffee and tea drinks, Sidamo also offers homemade soup and great sandwuches a.nd salads. All the more reason to stop by soon. Sidamo is located at 417 H Street.

Lost Dog Romping in Snow

From a reader:

While I was out walking my dog we came upon a little dog that looked lost. Unfortunately we weren''t able to catch him but i thought you might be able to post something in case the owners were looking for him.
He's a small dog (10lbs), like a westie or a yorkie. Wearing a red jacket and a collar with a very loud bark/howl for his size.

I followed his tracks up along the east side of gallaudet (west virginia ave) but lost him at about Oates Street. We called animal control, but in case the owners were looking for him, I thought we should send you a note.

This item is from late last week, but it's still news. The H Street CD sold the AutoZone lot (1200 block of H Street) Westmill Capital Partners LLP for 3.9 million dollars. The Washington Business Journal reports.

Church & State Opens Tonight

I was able to check out a soft opening of Church and State (2nd floor of 1236, right above Fruit Bat). The bar is heavy on the woodwork, with two faux stained glass windows up front, and a confessional in the back. It's a got a cool vibe, and the space feels very intimate. You will barely remember you are standing only feet about Fruit Bat.

Found Cat

IMG_0466

I received the following note from a reader:

We are avid readers of your blog, and know you often post pictures of found animals in the neighborhood. This young cat (photo attached) showed up on our front porch [at 16th and D the night before last] and we have it in a covered box with a heating pad and tons of towels at the moment...but we need to find her owner as my fiance is highly allergic to cats and we can't have her in the house.

It's very friendly, young, and LOVES people.

Can you please post this picture and let us know if anyone is missing him/her?

Sticky Rice Reopens

Sticky Rice
Photo from Frozen Tropics Flickr pool user InspirationDC

I wanted to share a statement from Sticky rice regarding the restaurant's recent shutdown. For those who missed it, my understanding is that some random crazy guy attempted to enter Sticky rice, was immediately ejected, but ran back in and slashed another patron in the hand as he ran back out. He was arrested shortly there after running down the street while chasing someone with a knife. MPD then shut down the restaurant temporarily, and ABRA will hold a hearing to ascertain whether Sticky Rice employees behaved correctly, and whether this incident should impact Sticky's liquor license.
