A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

The City Paper pokes fun at the Bones writers and their pseudo District with predictions as to the next neighborhood related gaffe. Check out the ones related to H Street and Trinidad.

East City Art has a nice feature on recently opened arts venue Open City DC (1348 Florida Avenue). I recently wrote about my visit to Open City DC, but this is a much more detailed piece, and it has photos.

Unless you've been living under a rock recently you'll have heard plenty of uproar over potential redistricting. Much of the uproar seems to issue from Ward 6, where protesters gathered last night to voice their objections to leaving the Ward. The City Paper's got full coverage.

I recently noticed the newly opened Aspire Health Food Store at 646 H Street, but had held off on writing because I haven't been inside yet. Meaning that I don't know if it's primarily supplements, or what.

Saturday night I stopped by the gallery openings (Conner, G Fine Art, Industry Gallery) in the 1300 block of Florida Avenue (immediately north of H Street). Aside from a lively evening of looking at art, sipping wine, and people watching, my friends and I also enjoyed our first look at Open Studio DC (1348 Florida Avenue). Open Studio DC is a screenprinting studio for artists. Artists can work in the space for a predetermined period of time, or until they complete a certain work. It's an interesting addition to the block, and occupies the corner space which has been vacant since the departure of Nifty Thrift.
WJLA has further information on the fatal shooting of 32 year old Ervin Lamont Griffin. Griffin, of SE DC, was shot multipletimes in the 1200 block of 18th Place (Carver Langston neighborhood).

The local Fox affiliate reports that there may be new DNA evidence in the 27 year old Catherine Fuller rape and murder case. As I have previously mentioned, the prosecution version of this crime captured massive media attention and tainted the local perception of H Street and DC. I'll be watching closely to see the outcome.

The City Paper has some nice shots of the Surfer Blood concert at the Rock and Roll Hotel last night.

Because we've been hitting up a lot of history recently, what with the WAMU piece and Richard Layman's response to it, and the Fuller murder (1984) coverage, I thought it might make sense to look at a snap shot of H Street in 2000. Here you go, courtesy of the City Paper.
It was a notorious case, perhaps DC's version of the Central Park Jogger attack. A woman brutally raped and murdered in an alley at 8th and H Street by a gang of youths. The motive? The $50 cash she carried, and assorted jewelery and personal items. It happened in 1984. Twelve defendants went to trial, resulting in eight convictions (two others plead guilty). One died behind bars. Now the convicted parties are in court with new witness evidence that did not out at the first trial. They are seeking either a vacated conviction, or a new trial.
