ABC7 reports that 19 year old Jeffrey Britt was sentenced on Friday to 20 years in prison for the 2009 murder of George Rawlings as Rawlings attempted to board a mid-day bus in the 1400 block of H Street. Rawlings had just left the funeral of a friend at Capitol Mortuary (behind the Argo) o on Maryland Avenue. Two other men have pled guilty in the 2009 shooting, and await sentencing. I believe the theory was that Rawlings was shot because others thought he had played a role in the murder of the friend who's funeral he had just attended. George Rawlings was the older brother of Deonte Rawlings, who was shot in the back by off duty MPD officers in 2007.
I thought people might be interested in these videos taken at this year's H Street Festival. The Festival drew a record crowd (around 50,000 people) this year, and that'a awesome. First time visitors will hopefully come back to try out the restaurants and bars along the Corridor.

A reader wrote in to let me know about a new local chapter of Weatherize DC. The thrust of WeatherizeDC's work is to help people weatherize their homes in order to save on energy bills and reduce fossil fuel consumption. Weatherize DC also focuses on creating green jobs for DC residents by hiring contractors from training programs to do the actual weatherization work. They offer services like home energy audits (perhaps a good idea as we head into fall), and are actively seeking new members who are passionate about these issues. There's a little statement they put together (contact info at the end)after the jump.

ZestFest returns to the streets of NoMa next week, with art, music and community gatherings! More than 11 events take place at four locations in NoMa from September 20 – 30.

The Washington Post has more information on the murder of Alecia Wheeler (42) who was stabbed to death Tuesday shortly after picking up here four children from a recreation center. Her accused killer, Claude Kinney, is also the father of three of her children. They had a history of domestic violence, and Kinney had threatened to kill her before. She had sought help from the courts. On August 12th she sought a one year protective order that would have barred Kinney from coming near her. The court granted her a two week protective order, but at an August 29th hear the judge declined to grant a one year order. Wheeler returned to court last week and obtained another two week order. Her children are now in the District's care. Kinney has been arrested at least 17 times in DC since the 1980s, but has only one minor drug conviction.

The H Street NE Retail Priority Area Project Grant is finally ready to roll. We've talked about the grant before. Basically, it provides grants of up to $85,000 for new retail operations on H Street NE. Existing merchants can apply as well, but only if they have a plan that will create new jobs for DC residents. Here are the highlights:
The Washington Post's Tim Carman reports that our buddies over at Taylor Gourmet are expanding their sandwich empire in a new way. Rather than just a new location (they're doing that too), they're adding a whole new kind of sandwich, the Philadelphia cheesteak. The new operation, Taylor Charles Steak & Ice, opens its doors this December at 1320 H Street. I have to say they kept this one pretty under wraps. I had heard that an established business person on H Street was opening a new concept, but I did not hear about this.

A 42 year old woman was attacked by the father of at least one of her children. The woman's four children (the oldest one is 9), who she had just picked up from a recreation center, witnessed the stabbing. Police are not releasing her name, or the name of the suspect. This occurred in the 1200 block of Morse Street. The Washington Post has more info, as does Fox news. This is in the Trinidad neighborhood.
I've already noted two local community garage sales on Saturday, but it turns out there's one more in between. Here's the full run down:
A recent Granville's (1238 H Street) special caught the eye of Young and Hungry Chris Shott. The item in question? Alligator and pork sausage. Young and Hungry previously reported an alligator sighting at Tru Orleans (400 H Street).

The rain may have spoiled your picnic plans, but it won't spoil tomorrow's Chalk Walk, or H Street Bakes. The Chalk Walk is all throughout the Corridor, and you can kick it off with brunch at any one of our fine local establishments. You'll definitely want to stop by the Pug (1234 H Street) for H Street Bakes (11am-3pm). Bakers this time around include Crunk Cakes (boozy cupcakes) Biscuit (artisan breads, croissants, and various savory options), and more. Some of the breads will be vegan.

A number of people wrote in to ask about a prolonged helicopter search late last night (early this morning). I didn't have an answer, and could only hazard a guess that they were searching for a robbery suspect. It turns out that this was actually the case. The search went on for more than an hour in the area near 13th and Maryland, before ending in the capture of the suspect.
I have no details, only the report below. This is in Trinidad, just off West Virginia Ave.
Homicide Watch D.C. has charging docs in the August 29th murder of 17 year old Tyrell Fogle. Anthony Hatton, 18, is accused of chasing and shooting Fogle in the 1900 block of Bennett Place (in the Langston Terrace neighborhood). Hatton, of SE DC, wore a mask as he chased Fogle and fired several shots at him from a 9mm Beretta. Fogle died of his wounds shortly thereafter.
Granville Moore's (1238 H Street) teams up with Flying Dog Brewery for a most delicious sounding beer feast September 27th. The beer dinners can sound a little pricey, but I'm told they are worth every penny. Check out the full menu (and description from Granville's website) after the jump.
