It's a real shame to see some 5B ANC commissioners attempting to delay something people voted for, want, and which does such a great service to the community. I wish the reporting on this issue was more reflective of the truth about what Ward 5 residents think. The truth is that the majority of people are not concerned about these cultivation centers and dispensaries, and seriously ill residents are anxiously awaiting gaining access to medical marijuana. The law was passed with more than 69% of voters supporting medical marijuana (63.7% of Ward 5 voters approved it), and since then support in DC has grown to 80% according to a Washington Post poll (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/postpoll_013110.html). It’s also clear the few naysayers out there are not aware that studies show that communities/neighborhoods either remain just as safe or become safer after such regulated facilities are established (http://www.safeaccessnow.org/article.php?id=6385). I’m a Ward 5 resident and everyone I know (many of them being Ward 5 residents) is excited to see the program finally get underway!
